Director, Information Systems Interview
I applied online. The process took 3+ months – interviewed at AbbVie (Waukegan, IL).
The entire process was a cluster-f, from start to finish. I had easily went through four or five recruiters, with each recruiter barely handing off the right level of information to the next. When I finally got to the final recruiter, they'd asked me if I would be available for a phone interview with the hiring manager, to which I replied "Well, if he's up for another phone interview, I suppose, but I did that about a month ago."
They clearly didn't have their notes together, that was for certain.
A month or so goes by, and yet another recruiter and their assistant contact me to try to make arrangements to fly out to Chicago for an onsite interview. Great, I thought, things are progressing. Never have I been so wrong.
The process to book my travel began about a week and a half ahead of the date of the actual interview. I did not have plane tickets in my hand until the Friday before the Monday I was to fly out, making my taking them seriously (and subsequently, managing my OWN schedule) very difficult.
Fine. Airfare issued, transportation arranged. I land in ChiTown and phone for my transportation. It arrives in the form of a stretch limousine. Fantastic, I think. I feel like I'm either going to the club in Vegas, or I'm on my way to a prom. Either way, I feel a little out of place hopping into a full on stretch limousine, especially for a job interview. "I sure hope I don't get the stretch limo to take me to the campus tomorrow," I thought to myself.
After being woken up by construction in the hotel AbbVie put me up at that Monday night, I got dressed and waited for my transportation to arrive. "Please let it be a sedan," I thought. "I don't want people to think I'm some hotshot d-bag showing up for an interview." Sure enough, another stretch limo appears. "Great, I'm that d-bag today."
So, if you're still reading, here's where it gets downright bizarre. Having never been to Abbott Park, I have no idea where I'm supposed to be. I'm simply relying on both the interview schedule and what the driver has been told about where to drop me off to be correct. I don't know my J23 from my AP10.
The first stop, according to my interview instructions are, and I'm copying and pasting from the schedule: "Proceed to building J23 to obtain a Security Badge. Then proceed to building J41 where xxx xxxx will meet you in the lobby to escort you to your first interview." Got dropped off at J23. Nope. Not happening. No visitor entrance, whatsoever. I'm a little bit concerned as I pick up the phone on the pillar outside of J23 and attempt to get in touch with my first point of contact for the day. It's then that a voice recognition system put a full and complete stop to that process, as it could not recognize my POCs name. As luck would have it, a very kind gentleman walked out at just the right time. I explained my situation, and he explained that I was in luck, as he reported up to the hiring VP that I would eventually interview with at the end of the day; he would personally drive me in his vehicle to the correct location, which was apparently J25, across the street.
Now that I arrive at J25, I wait for my first POC. Granted I was a little bit early, but they also wound up being about 5 minutes late. The rest of the interview with the first POC went fine, well, with the exception of a potential bate and switch. The POC (recruiter) had informed me that the hiring manager was also considering filling this position at a Senior Manager level. We then hopped in the POC's car to try and find where my limo was (back at J23) so that I could move on to my next interview.
My next interview was in AP09. Same as J23, I arrive to a phone. De ja vu. I interview with two people who were vocal about how displeased they were with having to double-team on an interview. These people would be operating at a peer level to the position I was interviewing for. All in all, this was probably the highlight of the interview schedule.
Here's where it gets weird, if it hasn't been already. The interview with these two is over, and I'm escorted up a few flights of stairs to my next and second to last interview. This was so bad, I'm going to call it out by name. My interview was to be with Seth Pinsky. My new POC, after escorting me to Seth's office, noticed that Seth's lights were out. The POC walked over to Seth's admin, who informed us that Seth would "be out for the remainder of the day." Befuddled, I wondered why I'd bothered to make the trip. The POC was kind enough to find an empty office, where we sat down and basically talked shop over the course of the next 45 minutes.
Low and behold, Seth arrives, announcing that we really only have 15 minutes to have an interview, so "tell me about yourself," to which I laughed, and said "you've got to be kidding me." I'd basically decided I didn't want the job at this point. Not if this was my peer.
