Manager In Training (MIT) Interview

Responded to an ad online, got contacted the same day and had an interview with district manager a few days later. Interviewed in the food court, interview questions were pretty standard about past experience in certain situations and what I had done in the past that would relate to position. I think there were about 10-12 of those questions and the entire thing took about 30 minutes. I am still wating to hear back...

I applied through other source. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Abercrombie & Fitch in June 2013.

    Interview Details

Really simple. Anyone who applies for the MIT program is guaranteed an interview with the District Manager. The interview last between 45 to 60 minutes. The questions are pretty basic and if you're struggling with them and they like you they will kind of lead you to the right answer. It's a guided interview. The DM is just supposed to read verbatim off the page what A&F has told them to (Same goes for all other interviews). My DM was dodgy and hard for me to get a hold of after my interview, we played phone tag for a while. Finally she got around to sending me my offer letter (Salary is non-negotiable) and my proposed start date.

    Interview Questions
    • The questions are stupidly easy. They'll ask about your opinion of diversity because the company likes to act like it's diverse. "we only hire pretty people, but look, they come in all sorts of colors!!" The questions aren't supposed to be hard, they want to see what you look like ad what your personality is like. You need to be bubbly and smiliy and upbeat! you also want to go to the interview wearing very natural makeup, flip flops, jeans (double cuffed at the ankle) and a simple white or navy top. (Colors change throughout the season but white and navy are basically always staples.   Answer Question

I applied through a recruiter – interviewed at Abercrombie & Fitch.

    Interview Details

I was stopped by a recruiter at the mall, not even near the A&F store. She was just walking around and stopped me, introduced herself in a friendly and flattering manner, and then insisted on setting up an interview. We had an initial Skype interview, and then she set me up with a 1:1 at the A&F in NYC (where I told her my preference was). When I got to the flagship store, I told the receptionist who I was there for, but she gave me an extremely confused look, and told me my interviewer wasn't even in for the day. That gave off an extremely bad impression to me. After waiting around for a bit, I was brought in by another employee, who first gave me the "elevator look", then began going through a packet of standard interview questions (tell me about yourself, leadership experience, etc etc). At the end, he went over salary, scheduling, expectations of image maintenance, mandatory outfits to be worn at work, etc. Then he gave me a tour of the entire store.

    Reasons for Declining

I felt the blast of shallowness from the moment I walked into the store, starting from the greeter (who had a permanent condescending look on her face- unless she saw a customer who looked like an A&F employee/model). Interviewer continued to stress the importance of looks. Looking back, I'm not sure why I was expecting anything else from this company. Offered starting salary was low, day-to-day responsibilities seemed stressful but not exciting. Weekends were always a must, atmosphere was suffocatingly fake.

    Interview Details

Submitted an online application and set up an interview with the District Manager. Met at a coffee place in the mall for a casual interview. DM took the time to get to know me, explain the job duties, career paths within the company, and tried to sell me on considering the position. Half way through the interview I knew I was going to get an offer when the DM changed "if we extend you an offer..." to "when you work for us".

Must have a BA degree in order to apply. Generally most candidates have been recruited by a current manager and if the applicant is already known by that person then chances are the District Manager who will being conducting the interview already know a lot about you. They are big on appearance. Interview process is quick and easy, generally a relaxed setting. No need for more than one round.

I applied in-person. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Abercrombie & Fitch in March 2013.

    Interview Details

I called into a store inquiring about the position and was told to come in and apply in store. The manager had me apply on an in-store computer then set up and interview with the District Manager for the next week. Interview was 1.5 hours long. started off very relaxed and conversational and then eventually got into basic situational question. None were difficult and he did not seem to interested in my answers. Wrote down brief summaries of my answers in his binder.

After the interview he told me I would hear from him in a week. Didn't hear from him so I called one week later. He told me he was making calls for second interviews that day and asked me to come in for a second. Second "interview" was just explaining the position more and making me an offer. This time he was selling me the position.
