Software Development Engineer I Intern Interview

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Amazon.com in March 2014.

    Interview Details

Did on-campus recruiting, and had two 45-minute interviews in the career center (most people have two 45-minute phone interviews from what I understand). It was very standard; they asked me some expected behavioral questions, like what was your biggest challenge in a group project - followed by some technical questions.

    Interview Questions
    • The first interviewer asked me two questions: store each level of a binary tree in its own list. The other was a simple dynamic programming problem that requires some context

The second interviewer was content with asking me one question about the shortest distance between two words in a document (word index).

Interviewed on campus. First guy was very unprofessional. Was laughing half the time I was answering his questions. He at one time made a snide remark directly at me, I almost just walked out the room. I first asked him if he was comfortable with the language I chose, but I had to constantly stop and explain to him the simplest syntax and functions.

Second guy was very professional. Straight and direct, seemed very robotic.

Very disappointed with the interview process. Do not see myself working in this type of environment.

Two phone interviews. Relatively easy questions related to data structures, algorithms, OOP concepts as mentioned in the recruiter's email. Nothing too surprisingly or out of the ordinary.

The interviewer will ask you the basic data structure such as hash table. Therefore, you should master hash table. The first coding question is get out of the maze. You could simply use DFS to solve it. The second coding question is compress string which is the same question in Cracking the coding interview.

    Interview Questions
    • One of the interviewer ask me tell me about your favorite project. He required that this project should be simply for yourself rather than research or courses. It is a really hard question, because most of my project are course projects.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university. The process took a weekinterviewed at Amazon.com in February 2014.

    Interview Details

Applied online in January and after 2 month when Amazon hosted a career fair on our campus, got selected for back to back 90 mins interview. 45 mins with each interviewer. Questions are standard questions. If you do problems on UVA online judge, Topcoder or Hackerrank regularly, these type of interview questions should be fairly straightforward to answer.

Also, as many other big tech companies, just solving the problem is not enough. It's also important that you make sure your thought can be understood by others. Explaining how you come up with a solution with clarity is much more important that just solving all of the problems without saying how you did it.

There are four questions. 1 focus on math, 1 on building trees, 1 on linkedlist and 1 on string manipulation
As always, make sure you also understand the complexity and performance of you solution.

    Negotiation Details
No negotiation. But I think the final offer (final salary) also depends on your performance during the interview.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Amazon.com in February 2014.

    Interview Details

My friend referred me, also I had applied online. I got email from HR asking for 3-4 time slots.
Then I was scheduled two back-to-back interview calls for 45-60mins duration.
Process was really nice and I liked the interviewers.
I followed Glassdoor and so far it has really been helpful (at least in this interview). Sometimes depending just on Glassdoor is not advisable, you should practice a lot because 45 minutes for a completely new problem is not sufficient.

    Interview Questions
    • Basic data structure questions. LL, HashTable, BT

Given an array of ints, sum up all the even numbers and print it. Then return true if any number in the array is evenly divisible by 7, false otherwise.

Given a two words, write a function/method to determine if they are anagrams

Given a singly linked list, split that into two lists one containing just the elements in odd position and another containing just the elements in even position.

It was for internship so I do not think anyone should negotiate.

    Operations Manager Intern Interview

    Application Details

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Amazon.com in February 2014.

    Interview Details

First round was relatively easy with two 30 min interviews. Basic questions such as "give me an example of a time." Went very quickly and interviewers were very conversational. Heard back the same day for second round interviews.

Second round was stressful with two 45 min interviews. First interview seemed designed to make me uncomfortable. Interviewer really dug into my answers to each question. First he was looking for high level insights like big or crazy ideas that I proposed in the past. Next he wanted to evaluate my leadership style. Overall he was looking for honest, straightforward, "no-BS" responses.

Second interview was two small case questions related to fulfillment center locations and general network frameworks (hub & spoke, distributed, hybrid). I was caught a bit off guard by these questions since they were very different from typical case questions I had practiced. I was expecting something about internal fulfillment center operations or evaluating an existing process. Be ready to explain Amazon's current fulfillment center network and what it could be in the future with predictive customer order models and new modes of delivery (e.g. drones).
