Interview

Three weeks after I had applied, I was granted a phone screen, but only because I had received an internal employee referral, which you will likely need as this is a very difficult corporation with which to make inroads.

The 30 minute phone screen was average in terms of both friendliness and difficulty level. I provided examples of my past work, successes and failures both, but was continually pressed for further detail and measurable "metrics." I did not seem to have the preferred qualifications, and I was clearly not giving the "right" answers. At the conclusion of the call, I fully assumed it would be the end of the road. However, a couple of days later I received a call from someone in HR, giving me a time to come in person, two days after that. I was told there would be four consecutive 1:1 interviews, 45 minutes each.

The best advice I can give to other candidates: prepare extremely thoroughly and be sure that you have memorized every detail of every job you've had, and most importantly, how it has affected the company's bottom line (in other words, how has it improved profits). Be especially prepared to describe all of your worst failures in great detail. They really want to hear a LOT about how you've fallen down and how you were able to fix the situation.

On the day, I was brought upstairs by a very friendly and engaging coordinator whose job seemed to be to “put me at ease.” The buildings and offices are all brand new and it feels like a modern, exciting place to be. I was shown to a conference room, where I stayed for the duration of my four interviews with four different people. The first and last interviews were the toughest, as the first was with a senior manager and the last was with the hiring manager. These two individuals asked the toughest questions and pushed me the furthest as far as wanting more examples and further detail. The third interview was actually very pleasant, as the interviewer was very friendly and genuine and seemed most empathetic with regard to being in a stressful interview situation. All four interviews were behavioral-based, asking questions of the "describe a time when you..." variety. The details I provided were never enough, and it was clear that my experiences were inadequate. The repeated response was "yes but, so....what was the RESULT?" Which translated as, "but how did you increase profits?"

It is absolutely true what they say about the interview being an opportunity for the candidate to "interview the company" as well. In this case, it was a very eye-opening experience, and I definitely left the building with the knowledge that it was not the company for me. I never received any kind of follow-up call or e-mail.

    Phone interview from agency, followed by phone interview with someone from Amazon, then a half-day onsite interview series with several individuals one-on-one. Most interviewers were pleasant, one was the most vile, disgusting, rude, offensive and obnoxious woman I have ever met. I really felt sorry for her. Somehow she traded in her humanity for her job at Amazon. I give her the benefit of the doubt that someday she will realize there is a difference between asking challenging questions and asking questions in an offensive and abrasive manner.

    • Not really a difficult question, but what was unexpected is that one of the interviewers would Google the answers to many of my questions in real time to see if what I was telling them was really factual. Such as "which industry leaders do you follow on a regular basis". She would then search for those individuals blogs and background and quiz me about them.
      I was also asked to write some boolean search strings. Mine were much more advanced than most people would ever use, or at least what the interviewer was familiar with. She insisted what I wrote was invalid until she tried them out.

    Had an internal referral and got a call screen within 3 days. Call screen was fine. Couple of days later got called for interview on site. Had answers prepared relating to all the leadership principles. Five different people interviewed me, back to back, which can be very intense for some.

    They all seemed to ask the same questions so it's almost a test of perseverance and patience I guess.

    Most annoying part of the process was them all clacking away on their ancient clunky looking notebooks. I thought they were taking notes, but I found out afterwards they're usually instant messaging one another.

    Telephone interview with recruiter for first round (positive impression); 2nd telephone interview with role manager who missed our originally scheduled time and had to reschedule the interview; 3rd telephone interview with another manager. 2 week break for scheduling onsite interview. Onsite interview consisted of 5 in-depth behavioral based interviews. Returned home and had another telephone interview. I felt the interview process challenged me but It's one thing to push people to excel and another to pontificate about expectations from high upon a mountain. I definitely felt a "chill" in the air. I felt compelled to want the opportunity from the shear challenge in the role - not because of the way the interviewer's made me feel through the interview process. I would suggest anyone preparing for this role go in with realistic expectations and be prepared to be humbled. The follow up communication following the onsite interview was not very good - took a week and a half to get a response back from my recruiter. The hiring manager really led me to believe that I was going to get this position and that did not happen.

    What a mess. I was contacted on LinkedIn by a recruiter and we set up the initial phone screen. I talked to her and she seemed really excited about me, setting up a second round call while I was on the phone. She also mentioned since I work remotely another department may want me to, and copied me on an email to her colleague. The only person I ever heard back from was the very out of touch recruiter for the second round. She had no experience and couldn't keep her questions or responses straight. Not only did I get absolutely no response but for a large company I'm shocked by how unprofessional the folks representing the company are.

    A Recruitment Coordinator was assigned in my application and would get in touch with me for any notification or clarification with regards to the application.

    The Recruitment Coordinator appears to be professional in her communication and though I found it organized, I would have done it differently if I was on the other end of the court.

    There was a long mail, an attachment on schedule of availability for you to fill-up. Phone interview was conducted for about 25 - 30 minutes by the Recruitment Manager. I was told at the end of the interview that they will update me whatever outcome there is - but have not heard from them til to date.

    What I found to be interesting is that - they seem not well-informed with regards to people who needs work permit for cases who are non EU citizens but are residents in Luxembourg. Nonetheless, I just feel they should be much more knowledgeable as it will help the recruitment process easier and of course considering that they are in the profession where it is must to know such scenario.

    But overall, it was satisfactory in the sense that the communication was clear, the agreed schedule was prompt and the quesries I asked were answered.

    5-6 phone interviews. Then an in person interview with 6 people. They flew me out and paid for interview expenses. The interview experience was nice. My only issue is the recruiter left me a voice mail letting me know I didn't get the position. She hasn't returned my calls. I took two days off of work to fly out and interview. The respectful thing would be to return my call regardless of the outcome. A voice mail is very unprofessional.

    Amazon recruiter proactively reached out to me and set up recruiter screen. Recruiter screen went well, so submitted me to several of his recruiting managers with open positions. Unfortunately, the recruiting manager that was the most interested was a perfect example of the stereotypical Amazon long-termer (10 years); super aggressive and confrontational. She spent 10 minutes pontificating about how hardcore she is as a manager and how she prides herself on being "direct"and quick to fire someone, if she doesn't think they are a "good fit". When I asked her about the tenure of her reports, she admitted that everyone on her team has been there less than a year... I knew very early in the interview, that I would never be willing to work for her. I believe she could tell and also declined.

    Being a recruiter myself and have never been so dissapointed with a company's recruiting practices. I had done a phone interview for contract Recruiter position at Amazon in September. The recruiter liked me and called me in to meet a team of 5 other people including the hiring manager. I didn't have any issues with the scheduling and I was able to meet everyone. The last interview was with the hiring manager and she mentioned to me that she would consider me for both contract or FTE roles in her team. She finished the interview letting me know that the recruiter would be in touch with me in the next couple days about next steps.

    I didnt hear back from the Amazon recruiter for atleast 7-8 days after the interview. When he finally called me it was on Friday night around 8pm. I wasnt able to pick up the phone so he left a message for me to call him. I called him first thing on Monday and was not able to reach him on the phone or over email. After playing phone tag for a couple more days, I was finally able to reach him on phone and he let me know that they were still in discussion about me for the contract position. I told him I was still interested in the contract role and also mentioned to him that I had found that week that I was pregnant. Once I mentioned that to the recruiter he said "Oh" and said he would get back to me about further feedback. I never heard back from them about the position or feedback.

    I don't think I will interview with Amazon anytime soon.
