Director of Product Quality, Plant Manager at American Woodmark

No Offer – Interviewed in Jan 2012 – Reviewed Mar 1, 2012

Interview Details – Interviewed for a Director of Product Quality Position. I have over 15 years of experience in operations & quality assurance including current ASQ certifications. I was interviewed by the hiring manager who admitted that he had no quality experience whatsoever. I was contacted by a recruiter who did two phone interviews, completed a phone interview with the Corporate HR Manager, and completed a ½-day onsite interview at the Corporate Offices. I was reimbursed for my travel. I also had to complete an online behavior assessment (Wonderlic) and had to do another set when I arrived at the corporate site. I was contacted through the recruiter who told me that they felt I did not have enough Quality experience, but felt that I had a more appropriate operations background.
As part of the rejection, American Woodmark asked if I would be interested in looking at a Plant Manager position, they had open in GA. I told them I would definitely be interested. They flew me down to spend the day at the plant; three weeks after I was rejected for the previous position. I toured the facility, met and talked with the Plant Mgmt Team as well as the acting Plant Manager. Seemed like a sell job on their part. Group was very friendly and open. Two weeks later, I was set up to tour a plant in West Virginia and then drive to their corporate offices to interview with the operations group. Left feeling like this was a great fit and a good opportunity. Within, 3 days I was called and told that I did not have enough experience that they wanted someone that had “been there, done that.”
Further analysis of this experience.
Process takes a very long time. 1st position took 3 months to get a NO; 2nd position took 1.5 months to get a NO.
I did not get reimbursed for my last trip (mileage, meals & hotel which they set up for me); despite several attempts to contact them to ask why I was not reimbursed.
I was also asked what I believe are inappropriate questions; Am I married? How many children do I have? What are their ages?
