I applied through college or university. The process took 2 months - interviewed at Anadarko Petroleum in October 2010.

    Interview Details

Anadarko typically only hires new college grads out of the intern program, so if you're wanting a job with us, start by interning. I applied for an internship, accepted, interned, and was hired. I interviewed in September on campus and heard back in late October. The ITS intern program takes 10-12 interns from all schools. At one school alone, they received 130 applications, interviewed 13, and took 2.

It's very competitive. Anadarko is essentially the Goldman Sachs of the oil and gas industry.
The average employee at Anadarko equates to $3 million of revenue per year, so only the best is accepted. Out of 10-12 interns, typically only 1-2 are chosen for full time. This is based purely on performance, and how well you match up with our company values.

I was blown away by the offer, so I accepted on the spot. I felt it was more than fair, and had no desire to negotiate.

Compensation for the internship is lower than companies such as Chevron, PwC, and COP. However, compensation for full-time employement is unbeatable.

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 months - interviewed at Anadarko Petroleum.

    Interview Details

I applied for a summer internship with Anadarko through my university. I first met with a hiring manager who conducted the initial interview. I was very nervous at first and the hiring manager seemed very tough but warmed up quickly when I asked her questions about the position. It went well though and about a week later I received a call from my would-be supervisor who said he wanted to discuss the position more. When I called back it turned into a conference call interview, so I didn't feel as prepared. He also asked less generic interview questions and more difficult, position-specific questions. A week went by after this second interview before the supervisor called me again to offer me the intern position. I was elated!

I applied through college or university. The process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Anadarko Petroleum in May 2007.

    Interview Details

I interviewed on campus for an intern position. I signed up through the career center and was given an on-campus interview. The day before the interview there is an information session. It is not required, but you are highly encouraged to attend. They take role and know who shows up. The interview consisted of a recruiter and a younger engineer asking questions. They asked about my resume, and asked some behavioral questions. It was not entirely behavioral though, and the questions were not as difficult as some of the others I have had. If you accept an offer with them be prepared for a hair follicle drug test, and a complete physical if it is for a field position.

Recruiter contacted me and described the opportunity. The phone interview was very comfortable - no tough questions. The one on one interview was again very pleasant. The interviewer was basically selling the company and the position.

    Petroleum Geologist Interview

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 days - interviewed at Anadarko Petroleum in September 2011.

    Interview Details

I attended the AAPG RMR Student Expo in Wyoming. Prior to departing to the convention I submitted an abstract and my resume for all oil and gas companies to look at. I received a phone call by one of the Anadarko recruiters and had an interview set up before I arrived. The first interview was with two recruiters. A 30 minute interview block was set aside. The first 20-25 minutes these asked basic behavioral questions and asked about my thesis research/background. Typical questions were 'How do you relate your skills into the oil and gas industry?' or 'What leadership qualities do you have?' 'How do you work in a team environment?'. After these question, I was given 5 minutes to ask any questions I had. Make sure to research the company prior to this and have 3-4 well thought out questions to ask. Example: "I've recently read online that Anadarko received the 'Houston Top Work Place Award' from the Houston Chronicle, can you please elaborate on the 'pros' of the work environment at Anadarko, but also some cons that you would like seen addressed from management levels'.

After the first interview I received a second interview. This was a 1:1 interview. Here, the recruiter had more specific questions about my thesis research and made sure I could talk 'technically'. He/She also mixed in behavioral questions.

After the second interview I was approached and was asked to go out to dinner with 7-8 recruiters with 7-8 of their top candidates. I'm sure this was to see how acted socially as well as professionally. The next day I was making my way back across the country and received a call in the airport that I was one of the top candidates. A 3 month internship was offered with a 3 week deadline. I accepted the offer.

    Overall: Be confident, be yourself.
