Too many people interviewing (US and UK) and process is too long before an offer.
The turnover rate in HR is very high; trading floor setup; promotion process is inconsistent; and UK tells US what to do so no real ownership with project start to finish

Hiring is an ad-hoc process at barclays at least below VP levels. It depends on which group you interview into. You can expect strong coding questions as well as business questions. Depends on what you wrote in your resume.

you should negotiate... definitely... better if you have competing offers...competing offers are easy to match and/or beat for them but they might not negotiate easily without that.

Interview process was standard as i had prior experience in the industry. Questions were expected and industry standard. The interview process took a long time, as in several months. This was longer than expected, which was a little bit frustrating.

Just conversational with the Director and an unorganized VP. Director asked me questions on performing business analyst roles. The VP was demonstrating me the MS application that they were going to migrate, and the high level document, which was most basic I have ever seen as a specification, and was gauging interest about the project.

Product Control, Equity Derivatives Assistant Vice President for Exotics Interview

Anonymous Employee in New York, NY
Anonymous Employee in New York, NY
    Application Details

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 daysinterviewed at Barclays Capital in April 2009.

    Interview Details

The initial contact was through a recruiter, and I was asked briefly about my specific product experience. The referral was based on my skill set, specifically about the greeks and derivative models. The interview was scheduled for the next day, which I was told was because the positions were likely to be in the budget for a limited period of time.

I was brought in to talk with 2 VPs, the hiring manager, and another manager in the same group. I was originally supposed to talk to the director, but there was a scheduling conflict for that interview. The interview was largely skills based, with a focus on exotics, and what the risks involved were. The interview was mainly geared to get to a point where I was no longer familiar with the option types, then I was asked about the risk factors.

Specific questions included listing the inputs into valuation of an option, what the largest risks were, what the volatility surface looked like, and what the specific risks for volatility and correlation were for a product like a rainbow, a cliquet, a butterfly, etc.

They were looking for a candidate with more experience (I have 2 years, they were looking for 4-5), and went with an internal candidate.

    Interview Questions
    • What is the biggest volatility risk for a cliquet?   Answer Question
    • What is the value of a rainbow of two items that are perfectly correlated? How do the two underlyings behave?   Answer Question
