Negotiation Details – Ask for a little bit more than what you want on the application. The offer was pre-filled on the offer sheet, can be hard to overcome.

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in San Antonio, TX Oct 2012 – Reviewed Oct 31, 2012

Interview Details – I applied online for a seasonal sales associate position. I've had only two months in clothing retail and 9 months as a receptionist. There's a long questionnaire afterwards to get a feel of your personality. If you agree or disagree with something, ALWAYS use the STRONGLY AGREE/DISAGREE option. It means you're sure of yourself. I got a call two days later from a hiring manager asking for my availability and what areas I would be interested in working in (Video Games, Cameras, Computers). I waited a few days and never got a call back. I called them and asked to set up an interview (bold of me, I know). They set me up with one the next day.

I was interviewed by the Home Sales Manager. They ask you the usual questions: (Why Best Buy? Describe a time you had to deal with a difficult customer, a time when you had to work with someone you didn't like, a time where you head to be a leader, what would you do if you caught en employee or customer stealing, etc.) They ask these questions off of a packet and take notes, so there will be awkward silences. The manager was very attentive to me and kept good eye contact. He was very relaxed and liked my personality a lot. He said I will be set up with the GM the next day.

The GM asked me the same questions and also wrote notes. He said I seemed "passionate about technology" and that I should be on Geek Squad instead. I wasn't really sure what I would be doing, so I said I'd rather be a sales associate. Luckily a current employee came in and told me to go for the Geek Squad position since they get paid more and don't have to worry about sales. I'm pretty sure the GM was fighting for me to take the position since I'm a girl. Customers at the Solution Center tend to be seniors and women, so he said I would be more approachable. I ended up taking the Geek Squad position. They offered me $10.80/hr and it seemed non-negotiable. I was ecstatic since I was making $7.50 at my previous job.

They will need your size because you get a special uniform, including shoes. I was given paperwork. I had to do a drug test within 24 hours. Once they have your drug test results and background check, they will call you for orientation/training. I was told training for Geek Squad is more extensive than sales associate training and a lot of it is like online classes.

ADVICE: Play up your technological skills and teamwork capabilities. Emphasize your ability to learn new products. Be upbeat to cover up the nervousness.

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Las Vegas, NV Sep 2012 – Reviewed Sep 24, 2012

Interview Details – Called me in for an interview at 8AM. I arrived 5 minutes early. Had to stand around for 20-25 minutes because they couldn't find one of the other interviewers in the store. The interview was conducted in a conference room with another interview (completely separate) done just 15 feet away across the table. The interview itself consisted of the interviewer reading basic questions out of a packet. The interviewer left three times in the middle of the interview to go do something in the store.

Interview itself was very easy but the entire process was unprofessional.

No Offer – Interviewed in San Diego, CA Sep 2012 – Reviewed Sep 21, 2012

Interview Details – I received a call a few days after posting my application online and was asked to have a phone interview. The lady that called me asked me about my availability, whether I applied to any other stores, and so on. After it was done, I was scheduled for an interview that was held two days later. On the day of my one-on-one interview, I was greeted by a Geek Squad manager and was lead to the music room to begin my interview. He gave me paperwork with a list of agreements about the interview and the potential job I was applying for. After glancing through a couple of pages of my online application, he asked me a couple of basic questions. At the end, he described to me that the position I was applying for was full at the moment but the management is seeking potential workers to fill the spot when the current workers are promoted. He also noted that I will receive a call within 30 days if I was selected for the second interview. I was very nervous and tensed up as it was my first job interview but he tried to create a friendly and casual environment to ease me a bit.
