Financial Product Sales & Analytics Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate  in  New York, NY

Application Details

I applied through an employee referral - interviewed at Bloomberg L.P. in July 2014.

Interview Details

First round- phone interview. Basic questions such as tell me about yourself? Why Bloomberg? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Second round- 2 speed interviews (30 min each) and then a tour. Same behavioral questions as the phone interview and also some technical questions. Tell me about yourself? Why Bloomberg? How many terminals have they sold globally? Explain the position your applying for? What are you following in the markets? How has specific news affect the stock or market? Also, make sure you know the difference between buy and sell side, and that the terminal accounts for 75% of revenue.

Final interview- 2:1 more technical, less behavioral. They will be tough on you. I was late 15 min due to traffic so they were extra aggressive. They will ask more specific questions about your resume. Be on top of news and current market conditions. I mentioned tensions in Iraq and how it affects oil prices. Then, they asked me the price of oil. Luckily, I read it earlier that day. Be prepared and be confident. They will try to intimidate you.

I applied online. The process took 3 days - interviewed at Bloomberg L.P. in March 2014.

I applied a position in Beijing office. Hong Kong office HR interviewed me. All basic behavior questions: Why Bloomberg? Why you? Then followed up with a role play - giving a cold call and sell a product to him. Last was Q&A section. He did not give much information on my questions, and said "that's so far you need to know" . Got the second round offer, but somehow didn't proceed in the end. The HR was a bit mean and unprofessional, which ruined my good impression about Bloomberg.

The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Bloomberg L.P. in February 2012.

    Interview Details

Initial phone interview was very short, just wanted me to run through my resume and explain why I wanted to work for Bloomberg. Was contacted a few days later and invited to the NYC office for a group interview with about 50 other kids. I interviewed with 2 people for 30 minutes each and was mainly asked behavioral questions (how would you deal with this situation, tell me about a time you failed, etc.) but also asked to explain the 2008 financial crisis and what was currently going on in the market. Thought it went well but didn't get an offer

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Bloomberg L.P. in June 2011.

    Interview Details

I applied online through the Bloomberg career website. A week later I received an invitation via email for a phone interview. The phone interview was brief (15 minutes) and it included the standard questions:
    1. Why Bloomberg?
    2. What do you know about Bloomberg? Customers? Competitors? etc.
    3. Why Financial Product Sales and Analytics?
    4. What are the key skills required to perform well in this position?etc.

After passing this interview, I was invited to their London office for an assessment day along with 15 or so other candidates. There was a tour, shadowing, and 2:1 interview. The interview was mostly competency questions, but they will also ask technical questions especially if you talk about them or they are listed on your CV. I previously worked as an analyst at a small hedge fund and I think that my stumbling block was when they asked me Why work at Bloomberg and not in finance/IBanking? It seems that the lifestyle explanation wasn't enough for them. Know that answer well if you have finance background.
