Initially applied online through the website portal. There was only one interview with two people and it consisted mainly of situational and behavioral questions. Such as, explain a time where you faced an unknown problem and how did you deal with it. They wanted me to explain the details of my resume and how the skills from my past experiences could benefit the position.

    Interview Questions

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 daysinterviewed at Blue Coat Systems in June 2013.

    Interview Details

The initial interview was in-person with 2 engineers. It included a sit down discussion that went over my background and experience, followed by some whiteboard exercises to prove I was actually able to do the work required.

The second interview was by phone, with the team architect, who works out of another city. He asked me only a few questions about skills of interest that were on my resume and would be applicable on the project.

The third interview was with the team's manager. I felt, from various indications and words, that, even after just the first interview, an offer would be forthcoming. So, the third interview was more of a feel good, get to know the manager meeting.

Within hours of the final interview, I had an offer.

I had to pass a background investigation check, along with some other obligatory forms, prior to starting.

    Interview Questions
    • The most difficult question was during the whiteboard exercises. I don't remember the exact question, but it had to do with linked lists.   View Answer

I applied online – interviewed at Blue Coat Systems in March 2013.

    Interview Details

A 45 min phone Interview with the employee I was to replace (who was moving to an overseas position with the company. This was followed by an in-person interview approximately one week later with the hiring manager and another employee I was to work closely with. Each in-person interview went for about 30 mins. The interview with the hiring manager was typical questions about my experience and the job itself. The interview with the employee I was to work closely with was extremely unusual. She came unprepared and when I asked how our 2 positions worked together she was initially stumped and said no one had asked that before. When I asked what she liked most about her job, she said "Today, nothing." She then went on to paint the company as disorganized, everyone having too much work, and from day 1 you "drink from the firehose". 3 days later I received a 30 min phone call from HR with some follow up questions regarding my interest and compensation. Less than a week later I received a phone call from the hiring manager with an offer.

    Reasons for Declining

The company was offering me a comparable salary (no increase, giving commuting costs) and in my follow up phone call with the manager my concerns about the negative work environment that the other interviewer had mentioned weren't diminished.
