Cashier at Borders

No Offer – Interviewed in Canton, OH Dec 2009 – Reviewed Apr 19, 2010

Interview Details – At first I thought that Borders would be a great place to work. The people seemed friendly, they seemed knowledgeable, and it seemed like the ideal place for someone that loved books as much as I do. I applied online, was called almost immediately for the the interview, and drove to the store to meet with the hiring manager. She and I seemed to have a good conversation, she assured me that I would be hearing from her soon about a decision the company made either way, and she expressed how glad she was to have met me. After a few weeks of not hearing from anyone, I began calling and getting the run around as to whom I could speak to about the position. Finally I was told that the woman that interviewed me no longer worked there, all the positions had been filled, and there was nothing anyone could do to help me. I could not believe they handled business in such an inappropriate and unorganized fashion.

Interview Question – Name a difficult situation you have had with a customer and how you solved it.   Answer Question

Came into the store for a 1 on 1 interview..we conducted the interview in the mall on the couches. It went well, with questions on what books am I into, and how comfortable I am in selling books that I may not be familiar with.

Sales Associate at Borders

No Offer – Interviewed in Jun 2008 – Reviewed Jun 30, 2009

Interview Details – The online application was strangely elusive, like they were trying to trick you, so you just had to be as honest as possible and not try top guess what they wanted or you'd slip up. This is a very popular company to work with, so tenacity in getting an interview and follow up are key. They were not hiring at the time of my interview, a minor annoyance, but the experience was enlightening about big corporation cookie-cutter interviews.

Interview Question – If a customer complained about the service and/or their purchased product, how would you handle the situation?   View Answer

Cashier/Bookseller at Borders

No Offer – Interviewed in May 2009 – Reviewed Aug 25, 2010

Interview Details – I applied online -- which they make all new prospective employees do -- but found that, despite them calling me in for an interview, that the face-to-face time was largely perfunctory and that they had already decided against me based on a lack of experience (for a job that arguably requires no experience). I found the hiring manager to be distracted and non-engaged and did not have a pleasant experience.

Sales Associate at Borders

No Offer – Interviewed in Nov 2009 – Reviewed Aug 21, 2010

Interview Details – The interview went really well, until I told them I had MS (fatigue related) and all interest was lost. I just wanted a job thru the Christmas rush. I love books, and I love talking to people about them. I was overqualified, and on the application it had a question regarding "special accomodations". On that question I put will discuss, and up until we reached that portion of the interview he was talking about "when u start etc" and then the interview literally shut down after I said I had MS, and the only accomodation I had was I would need the shorter hours at a time, the typical shifts no one wants, I would fill in for. He was open to that until the "dreaded MS" came up.

Interview Question – I see here you put you would like to discuss accomodations, could you please clarify?   View Answer

Cashier/Bookseller at Borders

No Offer – Interviewed in Apr 2010 – Reviewed May 27, 2010

Interview Details – Was brought in for a group interview. I had no retail experience per se, having gone from computer programmer to stay-at-home mother to massage therapist. A woman in the group had very good retail experience and out shined everyone else. Interviewer only seemed interested in speaking to me about how nice it is to have a massage. Had trouble turning the conversation around to show that massage therapists need excellent customer service skills.
