I applied online. The process took 4 weeks - interviewed at CSX.

Interview Details

I submitted an application online, it took approximately 3 1/2 weeks to hear back from them. They contacted me via email with the hiring session details. They then sent a second email identical to the first and then changed the online submission status to "2nd attempt to schedule". This concerned me as there was no way for me to confirm that I was going to attend. I contacted customer service and they assured me that this was just part of their process. It was.

The session took nearly the entire day. The "Brief" that was given about the company lasted a total of 2 hours. The individual giving the "speech" repeated the same things over and over again.

If you are going into this job the only advice I can give you is think "safety." You might think you know safety, these guys breath it. To put it into perceptive, they practiced fire drills in a hotel before the interview.

I showed up about 20 minutes to the interview where I was asked to put a number next to my name. There were people there who has shown up an hour before I did. Turns out, this number was the order in which we were to be interviewed. I sat down and to make it short, they hold a presentation that takes about two hours to finish; but it is informative. They try everything they can to discourage people from joining during this process. Stuff like, this is an exhausting job, this is a job that can kill you, this is a job that might not pay well in the short term, you will be required to take a 6 week course where you must score 85% on tests and 100% on a signal exam.

After the presentation, three guys interview you at once. The questions I was asked was mainly on safety. "Where did you practice safety on your previous job," "was there ever a time you caught someone breaking safety rules." Prepare accordingly.

In the End, you will get an email either saying go take a physical exam and a drug test, you did not get the job, or your resume will be in our system. Needless to say, I got the one that did not give me the job.

Applied online and was contacted about month later to attend an interview at the Radisson. I showed up 1 hour early and I was the 8th person so take a book because your arrival determines your interview time. Recruiter showed us a video about the company and then a couple of yard masters operations managers came up and gave us their "tough guy spiel" about all the difficult things about the job and if anyone derails a train in their yard they would be canned. This all changed at the interview. The interviews were done by the two yard masters (were the positions needed to be filled) and by the recruiter conducting his own. You def want the yard masters they spent more time w the interviewees. They cover pay very quickly and it is grey area. About 20 ppl attended overall for 4 positions.

I applied online. The process took 7 months - interviewed at CSX in July 2011.

    Interview Details

You apply online and it takes months for them to get back to you. I thought for sure I was not getting the job because so much time had passed. You start by filling out an application online. The days of just showing and talking to a manager to get a job are over. After you fill out all your information you take some reading comprehension tests. The first one is based on mechanical knowledge so any mechanical experience will help here. The second one is timed to five minutes and you will not be able to finish it which is frusterating. You will retake this test at the hiring session and the purpose of it is to make sure the same person who took the test online is the same person at the hiring session. The last test is about 150 questions of "It's ok to take home supplies from work without permission" and other questions like that and you should answer strongly agree or strongly disagree on every question in order to pass the test. You will be notified via email if you are invited to the hiring session so check your email. The will pick a conference room at a hotel near the location you applied for for the hiring session. There will be at least 2 people there from CSX. One will be the speaker telling you about the company and the others are there to observe all the canadites. They want to see if you can follow simple instructions like push in your chair. The whole session is a test from the moment you walk in the conference room. They will spend about three hours telling you all the cons about working for a big railroad to try and get people disinterested in the position but it is only half as bad as they say it is if you ask me. In my group they brought in 30 people and they convinced 22 of them the railroad wasn't for them. After that it will be lunch time and they will schedule interviews later on that day. The will ask mostly safety related questions durring the interview and it will take close to an hour. They will call you to let you know if you have been selected within a week. You will then have to take your drug test so if you do anything you don't bother applying here. The will do a hair folicle test and there is no way to foil that kind of test. They can pull hair from anywhere on your body and if you shave your head and wax your body that is considered a failure. There is no way to foil a hair folicle test. I know two guys I work with that tried the shampoo and they tested positive durring a random drug test at work. If you pass you will have to go for a medical exam. It will be strenuous and exhausting. They are not to picky with previous injuries as long as you can do the exercises. I have a bad knee and I passed the test. After that you will be notified on your start date at the REDI center in Atlanta. You will have to spend 6 weeks down there and pass with at least an 85 GPA. They will put you in a hotel and either pay you auto mileage to drive down there or pay for plane tickets. They will not pay for you to go home anytime durring the training. You will be on probation once you get down there so don't do anything stupid. After that you will go home and spend time at your assingned location for on the job training. Once you finish that you get marked up and are on probation for 90 more days after you are done with training. It is easy for them to fire you while you are on probation so don't get caught breaking any rules.

Starting with the online application process that is pretty tedious, to doing a personality overview. Then you wait. Get called eventually (maybe) for an interview. You will most likely meet in a hotel ballroom or meeting room somewhere. You will be interviewed individually after having taking the same personality and competency test that you took online, now only by hand. You will be told you'll get a call if they want you. Once you get the call you will schedule to go to Atlanta, GA to the REDI center for 6 weeks worth of schooling where they cram 2 years worth of education down your throat and expect you to remember it then you will go to your home terminal to do several weeks or months of OJT called "Cubbing" for next to no pay and about 60-70 hours a week.

I applied online. The process took a day - interviewed at CSX in March 2011.

    Interview Details

I received an interview email after I had applied online. I did my research on the company, industry and position. The group presentation began by signing in (that was to set the 1:1 interview time - someone showed an hour early). A person that showed 2 min late was turned away so be sure to show early! The presentation was very professional and the recruiter defined the position and the dedication required to the position (on call 24/7) as well as benefits. The interview was very easy - describe a difficult time you needed to motivate employees, can you work in all weather conditions, lift 83 lbs., how far from the freight yard do you live, any traffic convictions, etc... All you need is a clean record, somewhat physically fit and a can do attitude.

    Reasons for Declining

The biggest flag was the Recruiter "A" (at the presentation/interview) could not tell us what the hourly rate was for the Baltimore location because he "was from a different location under different union rules and pay." When I was offered the position (by phone by a different recruiter a week after the interview) this Recruiter "B" could not tell me what I was being paid hourly, but stated the first year salary averaged "$43,000." I expressed my concern and Recruiter "B" told me that he and the Recruiter "A" were not from the location I was being offered the position and did not know what the pay rate was (please note that this is a union position so there is no "negotiating pay") and that the Recruiter (Recruiter "C") that could speak for my region was only next door at my interview/presentation day (leaving me to think, "why didn't Recruiter "A" walk next door and ask?"). I pushed to get in contact with Recruiter "C" to find the answer to my question. I was given an email address (I have yet to receive a response to my email). Even in my "Conditional Offer," there is no statement of hourly pay, only a vague reference to the "average pay." I later sent a letter to Recruiter "B" informing him that I was no longer going to seek employment with CSX. Over a week later I received a phone call from Recruiter "D" wanting to reschedule my physical since I had canceled it. He was not aware of my email to Recruiter "B." I was extremely fortunate to find another position quickly. I I followed my gut. If this is any indication on how inept the Recruiting Department acts, what is the rest of the company like?
