Junior Associate, Manager Information Group Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Arlington, VA
    Accepted Offer
    Positive Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 daysinterviewed at Cambridge Associates, LLC (Arlington, VA) in May 2011.

    Interview

I applied online and heard back within a day that they wanted to do a phone screen. The phone screen consisted of very basic questions and suggested that I apply for a position that I wasn't actually applying to. Questions were not finance-based but more behavioral. I heard back within two days that they wanted me to come in for an open house. The open house consisted of a presentation by the manager about the group and the company as a whole. I was there with another individual who was applying for the exact same job. After the presentation we broke up and each talked 1:1 with the manager of the group, the director of the department, and the associate director of the department. All were very intense but again did not ask finance questions. Mostly behavioral to see if I would be a good fit. I then heard back in about two days that they wanted me to come into the final interview. The final interview was long, about 4 hours. I met again with the Director of the department as well as the manager of the group. All asked very intense questions but again mostly wanted to see if I would fit in there. I also met with the entire team and to talk about how they liked their job and why I wanted to work there. Also consisted of a brief writing sample that was really not very difficult.

    Junior Associate Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

The process took a weekinterviewed at Cambridge Associates, LLC (Arlington, VA) in October 2011.

    Interview

The hiring process consisted of a phone interview, open house, and second round interview. Phone interview: The phone interview will be less than 30 minutes and likely conducted by HR. Expect to go over your resume, talk about your greatest accomplishment and biggest weakness. There won't be much time for your questions. Open House: The open house consists of a presentation about the department and three 20 minute interviews with the group's managers. Be prepared for some hard questions including: Define professionalism, Name three weaknesses using one work for each weakness, What are three things you learned in the presentation earlier, Sell yourself to me, What do you think you'll be doing at this job, Name one positive trait you don't have, etc. Second Round: The second round will consist of a one on one interview with the Director of the group as well as the manager of the team they think you'll fit best on. You'll also participate at least one round table discussion with people who could be your team members and colleagues. Remember to ask questions. If you're interested in the position, act like it. You'll also do a writing sample, which isn't super challenging. Bottom line(s): - The Junior Associate position is likely in the firm's data group. The data group is extremely high performing and well regarded within the firm. If you don't want to work in a data group, don't apply. But there is opportunity for advancement after you have been at the company for a while, so it's worth it. - The position is not client facing, but you do get to interact with individuals that work for investment managers. - Professionalism is key! Dress and act the part. Although most people in the department are young, they are professional at work.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Cambridge Associates, LLC (Arlington, VA) in May 2013.

    Interview

Filled out online app; called the same day. First step in the process was a screening call. If you pass that step, they invite you in for an informative meeting with multiple candidates (in my case, 2 others) and three different interviews. Those interviews were tough. Each person comes in with a different personality and tries to throw you off guard. For me, this went well and I was invited back for the last step. The last step in the process is being brought into their office to review what you will be doing on a daily basis. After the walk-through, you have a 30 minute interview with the director. Again, tough questions. You cannot "BS" your way through the interviews; Cambridge is checking for inconsistency. I Was offered the job the next day.

    Interview

Candidates resumes are screened by HR and are followed up by a phone screen from within the department. If passed through, the candidate is invited in for a first round open-house style during which they interview with one member (hiring manager or team lead) from each functional team. If interested in the candidate, they are asked back for a 2nd and final round during which they have an interview with the assistant managers, manager, panel discussion with team members/peers, complete a writing sample, and have a final concerns session interview during which time the hiring manager presents any remaining concerns. If the candidate satisfies the remaining concerns, then an offer is presented from HR contingent upon background check.

    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Cambridge Associates, LLC (Arlington, VA) in March 2012.

    Interview

After a basic phone screen there are two interview rounds. The first involves interviews with several managers and senior team members. They all have varying interview styles so be prepared for various types of questions. Honest answers rather than pre-rehearsed responses are valued. There are also sessions with junior team members in our to establish whether the candidate would fit with the office culture. Second round involves more intense interviews and also transparency where a candidate learns the day to day operations of position. Asking questions of the managers when prompted is very important.

    Interview Questions

    • Some managers will try to revisiting tough questions about weaknesses etc. Again honesty and consistency is valued. Make sure answers are consistent through out interview. Managers will often look unengaged because they are recording notes on the candidates responses during an interview, this can be distracting but the candidate should not be phased by this. It is important to be candid in sessions with junior team members as often these sessions can be just as important as the interviews with managers. If you are not a finance of business major be prepared for questions about why you are interested in working in the financial sector.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

    There is no negotiation.

    Interview

Received a email notification from the Cambridge Associates' HR on Sunday midnight for phone screening interview on next day (Monday) afternoon. Was a very late notice with little information. They did not not gave you much details about the exact timing too. However I guess this is all about the screening process with "surprise element". The key is constantly check your email and be responsive. Received phone call in the afternoon at 1pm and the phone screening last for about 15 minutes. The interview went well with very simple question. Why this firm? Why this industry? On the phone call itself, they informed me to attend another physical interview on next day (tuesday). Was very surprise again however I accepted the invitation.
