I applied online and the process took 2 months - interviewed at Capital One in November 2013.

Interview Details – I applied online and heard back from a campus recruiter within a few weeks. I was later asked to do a phone interview with the same recruiter. The phone interview was pretty straight forward--we went over my resume and past experience and she asked about GPA and SAT scores. When I asked the recruiter my questions, she did not seem very knowledgeable of what was going on with Capital One financially or strategically. She avoided most of my questions. The recruiter told me that she would get back to me about whether I would move on to the next round of in-person interviews within the next few days and I did not hear back from her for over 2 weeks. A bit unprofessional, I am glad that I did not move on in the end.

Interview Question – Describe a time when you had to analyze something--what did you interpret, what actions did you take and what results did you see. Be as specific as possible.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and interviewed at Capital One.

Interview Details – First interview was a case interview on campus with a director. If you pass the case interview, you are flown to the Capital One campus for three more interviews: behavioral, fit, case. The behavioral interview were the typical "tell me when you..." The fit interview was about how you would obtain information that you need in a project you are working on. There were maybe 5-7 questions of this type (a little repetitive). The last interview is the case interview, and was conducted by two managers (can be a little intimidating).

Interview Question – Break even analysis. Very easy math when doing it on your own, but can be a little hard with 2 people in front of you.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Capital One in October 2013.

Interview Details – Started with a 40 minute phone interview with a recruiter. At the end of the interview, I was invited to go out to Virginia for the final 4 interviews.

First Interview- Job fit. Basically questions about your past and how you came to apply.
Second interview- Case. I was working in a commercial bank with a diversified portfolio of loans. Someone wants a loan to open a McDonalds in a new Airport terminal. What are the risks associated with operating a McDonalds inside an airport. Then, with the loan at 4%, how much interest will the McDonalds be paying every year.

They then give you an alternative McDonalds, with a higher rate. Hint: What they are looking for here is attention to P/L and how it effects the balance sheet and further, how the equity is effected in the market.

Third Interview- Behavioral. She was a little late, but otherwise looked uninterested. These were situational questions. Like, Tell me about a time when....

Fourth Interview- Case. (I had to do an additional one since I didn't get recruited on Campus)
Affinity credit card. Tie a credit cared to your school. You pay the school X amount per year. You get 12% in APR and $20 in annual fees. Your costs are a,b,c. (Cost of funds, SGL and default rate)

Then, the school wants to buy the entire program. They offer you $15 per card holder, using the information you have, figure out what a negotiator should expect to offer.

Everyone was nice and relatively friendly.

I applied through college or university and the process took 4 weeks - interviewed at Capital One in October 2012.

Interview Details – The interview process consisted of a campus interview followed by a trip up to their campus in Richmond, VA for a final round of interviews. This included a case interview, a behavioral interview, and a personality interview. What followed was a tour of the campus, and meeting with year one program participants to learn more about the job and the rotational program.

Interview Question – My case was about call center profitability metrics. Just simple profit analysis with fixed and variable costs.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Capital One.

Interview Details – Process was smooth, recruiters were nice, and interview day was not stressful. Be ready for 1 case, 1 behavioral, and 1 job fit interview. Be prepared to provide scripted answers to their scripted questions. Very cookie cutter process to find the next generic employee.

Interview Question – Case interviewer asked me to do a DCF of a specific situation w/o all the neccessary information.   Answer Question

Interview Question – The practice question they have online wasn't hard, but the one in the interview was not easy. There are many variables to consider and they don't walk you through it.   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Capital One in November 2011.

Interview Details – I was contacted by the company via email after submitting my resume online for the position. I was asked to take two timed online exams, one for math skills and one for verbal. I also had to take a personality test. Afterwards I was told that I passed the two exams and was invited to attend an interview day in Richmond, VA. Capital One covered all expenses for the travel, including my flight and a hotel room for one night. Because I had not had an on campus interview previously I had to do four 45 minute interviews in the morning (most people only had to do 3 since they had done one already at their school). The interviews consisted of a basic job fit interview, a behavior interview (answer 3 situational questions using STAR technique), and 2 case interviews (for me, other people only had to do 1 case interview that day). The case interviews were the hardest part of the day, but in general they were pretty straightforward - they used pretty basic algebra/math and you needed to talk through everything you were doing. The questions dealt with credit card scenarios, so some information talked about was unfamiliar but they were willing to explain everything when asked. Overall, I thought I had performed quite well in all of the interviews, but I was contacted and told they would not be moving on with my application (also Capital One is quite quick in getting back to you about the interview - 2 to 3 business days).

Interview Question – University Credit card - should university buy it out from Capital One or how can Capital One keep university from buying out the card (from the case interview).   View Answer
