Business Analyst Intern Interview

Business Analyst Intern

I applied through college or university and interviewed at Capital One.

Interview Details – They had an on campus interview first, which I think has a really low threshhold for success, because I blew it and still passed. Then I went to the office for round 2 and stayed at the hilton. they had a dinner for us the night before and a lunch and tour the day of... the people they had us with were somewhat weird, though.

Interview Question – One case about energy plants and looking at graphs. One case looking at atms. Lots of solve for x type problems   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Capital One.

Interview Details – Everything was very professional and the recruiter at my school was really helpful and communicative. Although they claim to be very laid-back, Capital One is a very corporate environment. The other people interviewing were very high-strung and they weren't necessarily passionate about Capital One but rather just consulting and company names. I made it past the initial interview at my school and was flown to Richmond. I was very impressed with the tour and all of the accommodations, but ultimately I think my lack of background in finance and economics was an obstacle

Interview Question – As a liberal arts major, I was thrown off guard by a case problem about loans. I didn't know a lot of the terminology and my interviewer seemed frustrated when I asked questions.   Answer Question

Interviewed at Capital One

Interview Details – Applied through campus recruiting and was notified about getting an interview.

First round interview consisted of a single 30 minute case with questions afterwards if you finished earlier. The case consisted was relatively simple, but a lot different than normal cases. Lot of focus on math and break even calculations.

Notified I made it to second round which was a super day at their Richmond office. Second round consisted of 2 cases and 1 behavioral each given by different people. Behavioral was standard, and the cases were the same type of math focused one. First case was basic, but the second case was more difficult because it relied on deriving a number given a printed out spreadsheet of data. What made it harder to focus was that the interviewer for this case was constantly jotting down notes.

Interview Question – Case analyzing the business of telephones on airplanes.   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 5 weeks - interviewed at Capital One.

Interview Details – Contacted by recruiter soon after applying, asked to complete the online math/verbal/behavioral tests then asked to speak over the phone with the hiring manager, then invited in for a full day of interviews with three company representatives.

The job seemed to match my advertising experience, but was more focused on product marketing which is not my strong point.

Interview Question – Questions directed at increasing card usage/sales through increased loyalty marketing.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Capital One.

Interview Details – I am part way through the process. Recruiters came to campus, told me to apply online. The day after the position closed I was emailed for an interview the next week. After 1, 30 minute case interview I was emailed later that day inviting me to fly to Virginia for second round

Interview Question – A pretty straight forward profit maximization problem. I would suggest refreshing what you remember from that. The trickiest part was substituting the demand back into the profit function before you take the derivative. They were willing to give hints and apparently that was ok. I still got the second round even after getting stuck in some places.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university - interviewed at Capital One in December 2013.

Interview Details – first round: thirty minute mini case. The interviewer did not introduce themselves or provide background. A calculator was provided though I didn't use it.
second round: two cases and one behavioral. The cases were deceptively simple--I was forced to backtrack when one of my interviewers hinted that I had come to a different conclusion than the official one. The interviewers are very clear if not readily helpful.
