    For group interview, group discussion about: your understanding and experience about excellent customer service, why you want to work at Coles, give priority ranking for a couple of situations such as an oil split on the floor, you saw a team member putting something into his pocket etc...

    For one to one, tell me about yourself, what does excellent customer service mean to you, give some examples where you show some values such as customer first, safety in service, integrity; examples about you sorted a difficult situation, your achievement...

    Interview Questions
    • An example you showed concerns about safety in customer service. Fortunately I have done a tour guide job so I had something to say. Otherwise I can't think of a good example. Maybe you can say something like there was water on the floor and you wiped it prior to other things?   View Answer

    I applied online. The process took a weekinterviewed at Coles Group in October 2014.

    Interview Details

    I applied through the Coles careers website. I had received an email letting me know of some vacancies in my store ("We currently have vacancies in such and such departments" etc). I received this email as a result of having previously submitted an expression of interest. There was a two-day window for application, where I received the email October 8th, submitted Oct 9th, and applications were to close on the 10th.

    On the 11th, 2 days after applying, I received an email informing me of my success in applying and inviting me to an interview. ("Congratulations, you have been selected to attend a 'Let's Meet' Group Interview session..."). The email also provided a link to book from 3 time slots for the interview. These were on the same day; the 14th.

    On the 14th, I attended the interview. There were 4 tables in the room; two for applicants to my store and two for applicants to another nearby store. We sat down at the table, 7 to a table: 6 applicants and one store manager. We went through a short presentation on Coles including watching videos on what it's like to work at Coles. We were told that the purpose of the interview was to see not only if we were right for Coles, but if Coles was right for us. After watching this video, we had to write on a name tag with a picture that represents a part of us (we were told no smileys) and went around the table and answered these type of questions:
         - What's your name?
         - Why Coles?
         - What department would you like to work in?
    Following this, we were asked to choose a picture of a food from a selection of laminated photos. We were told to sell these to a hypothetical customer who was in a rush, using any sales methods we liked. We then were given another selection of products and asked to arrange them from lowest to highest price. We were given approximately 8 products to sort and these included ibuprofen, denture cleaning tablets, biscuits, chicken wings and seasoned potatoes. Afterwards, we were told that we would receive an email if we were unsuccessful and a phone call if successful.

    Two days later, I received a phone call notifying me of my success in applying from the store manager! She told me that I would receive an email with details about induction. Induction was roughly a week later, and we just watched videos on safe work practices and how to do our job, got a store tour and received our uniforms. Training for registers, which everyone had to do regardless of their department, commenced 3 days later. Even as a deli team member, who will never be called out of my department, I had to complete this training. No complaints though, just means I will be able to pick up more shifts in Service (registers)!

    Interview Questions
    • Overall, the interview was very easy. After we were recruited we were told we were hired on our personality rather than the experience we brought. A lot of those hired have never worked before, myself included! The one question which was the most difficult for me was "Why Coles?", as honestly I was planning to take any job I could. I thought about it though and I realised the answer was clear:   View Answer

    I applied online. The process took 1+ weekinterviewed at Coles Group in October 2014.

    Interview Details

    I applied through the website on Saturday and got a reply on Sunday (because the application was closing on Saturday). The group interview was on Tuesday, out of the vicinity of the store, but at the office. I expected 10-30 people but there were 60-80! All sorts of people, applying for various positions at various locations.

    // Group Interview //
    tldr; It was less about your answers and more about your behaviour.
    60-80 people seated at tables in groups of 6-7. We wrote out names big on name stickers. The facilitating lady (very humorous) made the Coles managers/representatives introduce themselves. They stood at one per table. From different Coles locations, which were hiring.
    Ran through a powerpoint about Coles, history, statistics, information.
    Activity: Introduce yourself to your group 1~2 minutes each! Quick and easy.
    Activity: Order these things in order of priority (someone else on glassdoor has mentioned this already) individually, then discuss and finalise answer as a group. Basically, safety and customers first!
    Activity: Brainstorm as a group what makes great customer service. Afterwards, describe it to the Coles representative for your table.

    The last thing we did was fill out, well basically another application form. Don't bluff on it. We could apply for multiple locations (order them in order of priority). Fill out your availability. etc.

    Overall it was fun, interesting to meet so many different people.
    Just be sociable and willing to interact with your group. Talk to them. Talk to the Coles person monitoring your table. Show that you're capable of being human.

    Of course throughout, there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
    Some questions people asked were:
    - Is there any further training provided?
    - Can we apply at multiple locations?

    // Individual Interview //
    The next day they called and asked me to go to the 1 on 1 interview. It was with the store manager. Overall a positive experience. Friendly person, easy to talk to. There were many questions. Not hard. But prepare yourself, think of examples BEFOREHAND of when you've demonstrated team-ish skills. You don't want to be sitting there rummaging through the archived files and memories of your life. We sat in a small room with a table and chairs. I love the table. Thank goodness for the table. I smiled a lot, maintain strong eye contact.

    After 6 days they contacted me with acceptance.

    // Tips //
    + A trick for maintaining steady eye contact: When you look at people, observe their eye colour.
    + Smile with your eyes, not just your mouth.
    + Don't worry, seriously.
    + Think of examples of your skills/qualities, keep them on your mind.
    + Talk to other people in the group interview, don't close yourself. Be open, take initiative.

Group participation across all activities is heavily required to make you stand out from the crowd. But those undertaking this process should adhere to quality of answers over the quantity of them.
