A friend started the application and interviewing process but quickly found out that the CS was looking for something they had not posted for which confused my friend because he would not have applied for a position if he knew it was not what he was looking for. He passed my name on via email and stated that I would be following up since I was also looking for work and had excellent experience in the exact same industry working with extremely similar products.

I went in to meet the GM but the GM was out of town. Following up a week or so later, I had a very delightful conversation with the store manager who appeared to be very intrigued and interested in my resume and cover letter presentation which I brought a hard copy of. The GM even stated how impressive the presentation was and thanked me for taking the time be so professional. The GM highly encouraged me to apply and encouraged me to be patient as the interview process takes a while.

One week after applying online, I received an email declining my application stating they were "moving forward with other candidates". Yet, I am a perfect candidate for the job working with their competitor and receiving many of the CS's shoppers who want more reasonably and affordably priced products. Their clients come to me at their competing store for their needs. So, I'm a bit confused by the rejection which had absolutely no explanation. The fact they would not even offer me an interview is completely shocking. Any discrepancies discovered on the online application could easily have been resolved through proper communication. The job posting remains on their website for the exact location I applied for. Now I have to wait 90 days to re-apply?

The online application said nothing about requires availability.

I applied online – interviewed at Container Store.

    Interview Details

Applied online which is the only way. Group interview and was told I'd be contacted within a few weeks (believe it was two). Met one on one with a full time employee to discuss more about the job/ask a few more personal questions to get a feel for my personality/ambitions. Started working fairly quickly after this process with basic training with the few others (smaller group) who were hired.

Overall a very casual, non-pressured group interview. Didn't feel like it was a competition, as everyone seemed to have a fair shot at explaining themselves, and no one seemed hostile. Managers were very friendly and facilitated discussion well.

    Interview Questions
    • Fairly basic questions really. What skills I had that would suit me for retail/sales, where I saw myself in the company, if I understood what the companies vision (foundation principles) were.   Answer Question

I applied online. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Container Store.

    Interview Details

It was a two-part interview process. The first part involved a group interview where you watched videos about the company culture/expectations and participated in discussions about it and what you learned from the videos. You were also asked to make a presentation about how one of their products can help organize an area of your home. The second part of the interview was a one-on-one interview that took place a week later. It was brief and I was asked questions such as tell me about yourself, what are your strengths, and how my job experience so far would tie into working at the store. It was very laid-back and casual; it also helped that the manager who interviewed me was amazing and friendly. Last word of advice would be to show passionate you are about the store, its products, and its mission--study the foundation principles!!!

I applied online. The process took 4 daysinterviewed at Container Store.

    Interview Details

I applied online and was called in for a group interview.
The interview was essentially just the managers explaining the company and it's culture to everyone. We were asked to bring a copy of our favorite product from their website to the interview and share it with the group, about why we liked it. We were asked to tell a little something about ourselves and our previous jobs and then asked general questions about The Container Store and what we learned.

They then selected people from their group interviews and narrowed them down. Called me in for a second, one on one interview, which was pretty generic. It was actually a very easy interview, no role-playing involved, no on-the-spot questions.

Then they offered me the position!

They just told me the position they wanted me for and how much it was per hour, and if it sounded good to me. Later, I found out most co-workers negotiated their salary and got paid a lot more than me. They just will not tell you that unless you negotiate, so PLEASE NEGOTIATE.

My interview process was interesting. First you apply online and you will receive an email in about a week if you have been chosen for a group interview. The next step if you get past the group interview you will be given a one on one interview via phone. After that you will be given a job offer via email or phone. I was originally declined the job but got a call not even a week later offering me the position.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Container Store.

    Interview Details

Applied for the job and received an email inviting me to a group interview on a Sunday morning. I wasn't sure what to expect, but they assigned me homework to get online and print out what my favorite product of the store was. The group consisted of about 10 other people going for the same positions. Some were there for full-time and some for just part-time. After the group interview, I was invited back for a one on one interview with the store manager. We just discussed what I currently do for my full-time job, and mainly it just felt like a time of getting to know one another. The culture/environment is very laid back and fun, while also getting down to business. That's how the interview process went, but I really believe that they're very interested in the way that you present yourself, your genuineness, and how you will help/treat customers.

I applied online – interviewed at Container Store in February 2014.

    Interview Details

Uploaded resume via website and was invited within a week for a group interview. From talking to the store manager, I gather that they conduct group interviews every so often when they are looking to hire a bunch of new employees. The idea here appears to be that from a training perspective, it's more cost effective AND efficient to train several people all at once. After the group interview, I sent a thank you email and was told that the regional manager had emailed me to invite me back for a one-on-one interview. He hadn't done that, so I reached out to him and he set up a 45-minute interview with the store manager within a few days. I was interviewed at the end of a hiring cycle, so things moved very quickly for me.

Both interviews were very comfortable and pleasant. The group interview took place in the middle of the store on bungee chairs. All the candidates were super upbeat, enthusiastic and extroverted, so it was hard to get a word in edgewise! The questions were fairly predictable (who are you, and what brings you here today), and included viewing and responding to various videos we were shown. And we were asked to prepare an organizing solution and bring that. Not a big deal; just printing out a product page and talking about the challenge you are trying to organize in your home.

Seems like it'll be a great place to work. They provide a lot of training, and I like the idea that I'll likely be starting with a number of other new people. No fun being the only new girl.

    Interview Questions
    • At the end of the group interview, we were asked to fill out a schedule with our availability for the next three months, so be prepared with that in advance.   Answer Question

I was offered the number I put in their online application ("desired salary"). I will get $12/hour, and wish I had put a higher number. I didn't negotiate. I was told this is the middle of the range, for whatever that's worth.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Container Store in November 2013.

    Interview Details

Three rounds: first was group interview with about 6 other applicants and a manager. Be prepared to know generally about products sold at the Container Store, and be enthusiastic about the opportunity to work there. Second round was one and one with a store manager, typical interview questions including past experience and why you want to work at TCS. Third round was a final interview with the general manager, questions pretty standard and similar to the second round.

They are great on this process: If they need people they will contact you shortly, pretty much all communication is via email. They usually do group interviews and orientation about the company at the same time. The entire process can take around 2 weeks. Everything is very upfront and easy to follow, you know exactly what to expect next on the process, they tell you exactly when you will be contacted for the next step and they are open to move dates around your availability to make. Very professional.

    Interview Questions
    • They give an exercise to discuss on the interview but you have to be prepare before you get there. It's different and exciting.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
You have to interview with all the managers before they ask you how much you are expecting, they don't make an initial offer; the GM makes the final offer to you after you take all the tests and meet the other managers.
