I applied through a recruiter. The process took a day - interviewed at Cummins in February 2012.
I applied for this job on a specialized engineering website and also the Cummins website. I was offered a job interview within a week by a Cummins recruiter who arranged an interview for the following week. I was emailed a copy of the job description, benefits and interview itinerary before the interview. The interview was scheduled to take 2 hours. 1 ½ hours for the interview and a half hour wrap up with HR.
I arrived for the interview about 20 minutes early, and was instructed that I was required to watch the safety video before I was allowed to enter the facility (about 15 minutes). Following the video, the hiring manager came to get me and took me to the conference room.
The interview consisted of me and 5 employees including HR, Engineering, EHS and Environmental personnel. They asked me to tell them a little about myself, and then went on to conduct the "interview". They asked random behavior based questions about leadership, name a time that I failed at something, etc. These questions were routine as far as behavior based questions are concerned, however I feel that these questions do not apply for specialized technical positions. This was the second interview I have had in my life that was solely behavior based- Mars also does it, I am not a fan. I took my time to answer each question trying to tie it to current and previous positions I have held. I asked them to repeat one question, and then explain what the interviewer thought it meant, and he then replied with he wasn't sure what the question meant (helpful- not so much).
At the end of an hour, they asked if I had any questions. I had typed out about 20 questions, depending on what was and wasn't covered during the interview. The first question I had was for them to tell me about the day to day responsibilities of this position. The EHS hiring manager then said while the position answered to the HSE manager, it wasn't really and EHS position, but rather worked for another engineer. The engineering manager then jumped in with a question about my background as a risk analyst. I then asked how this position related to the job posted, and didn't get much of an answer. Based on this new information I withheld the rest of my questions, as I found that the job that was advertised wasn't even close to the job they were offering, and we said our goodbyes.
I was offered a tour of the plant, which was very interesting and is usually the highlight of interviews I have attended. Following the tour, I met with an HR representative. This person had never done an interview before and read off of a list of questions during this final phase. He asked if I was ok with the pay and benefits. I informed him that no one had gone over the pay and he said he didn't know the pay and would have to ask...? Really? He asked if I then had questions about the benefits. I asked about the relocation, and he proceeded to read from the benefits sheet they had provided! I asked specific questions and again he said he didn't know and would have to find out. He asked if I was looking at other companies and the salary of those positions. He then took me to the front desk for me to turn in my vest, badge and safety glasses.
I called the recruiter on my way home, as had been requested, and we spoke about how the interview went. I informed her of my disappointment and she said she was sorry to hear it. I told her I didn't appreciate driving all that way (with no expenses covered) to the interview to only have it turn out to be a different job in reality. She said she was sorry and that she would have told me sooner, if she was able. She then informed me that this position had been posted for like 6 months or something with a different title and job description and didn't get any responses, and thus changed it to an EHS position. She asked my salary requirements, and I asked what the job paid- about 25,000 less than the actual EHS position would have been. I told her my requirements and she said she could do it if I was interested. I told her I didn’t even know if I would want it for that amount since it wasn’t in my career field and also lack of interest in general at this point. I also informed her of the HR staff's inability to answer basic questions. She offered to put me in for another position a few states away that WAS in my career field. I then declined and said I didn’t want to go any further with the position I had interviewed for.
Overall, this left me with a bad taste in my mouth for Cummins. My recruiter went above and beyond in my opinion, and would possibly apply for another position here- but we will have to see.
I hope others have a better experience. I just wanted to give my experience with my bait and switch interview as this was my first experience with Cummins.
- Name a time when you had a long range goal, steps you had to reach it and whether or not you reached that goal. Answer Question
