Sales Associate Interview

I applied in-person and the process took 5 days - interviewed at DSW in October 2011.

Interview Details – First was a phone interview, asking questions about why you want to work at DSW. They just want to get a feel of your people skills over the phone because that's part of their customer service. They followed up with an in person interview with the store manager. She was professional and seemed down to earth. The in person interview was at the store in the back, she asked a series of questions as to how you handle certain types of situations regarding sales and customer service. I remember it not being very long but just seemed like a normal interview for a retail position.

Interview Question – How to handle difficult customers given specific scenarios.   View Answer

I applied in-person and the process took 5 days - interviewed at DSW.

Interview Details – Group interview, pretty effortless, no need to have retail experience. As long as you don't have a 3rd eye, they'd probably hire you. They did check my references. I was called and offered the job soon after my references let me know they had called.

Interview Question – What does DSW stand for?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – None.is what it is. Even my annual review was literally her telling me your raise is $0.25.

I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at DSW in May 2014.

Interview Details – I applied online and about a week later I got a call asking to come in for an interview. It was a one on one interview which was a good thing since, for me at least, they're easier and a little less stressful. The hiring manager was wearing a button up shirt and jeans, he was young and casual. Overall, the interview did go really well. It was a little strange at one point since he wanted me talk in third person about myself, but working with him I see that's just how he is, a friendly and funny manager. He said he would call me in a couple of days to set up another interview with the store manager. He called back saying that they were going to move to the hiring process and that the manager said she didn't need to meet with me because I guess the interview went that well or something, I'm not entirely sure. But overall it took about 1-2 weeks and I thought it was a pleasant experience overall.

Interview Question – My interviewer asked me "Do you think someone should go to jail for stealing $500 worth of merchandise? How about $2 worth of merchandise?" which I didn't really know how to feel but I tried to answer it the best I could   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 1+ week - interviewed at DSW in June 2014.

Interview Details – I had two interviews; one preliminary interview with an assistant manager and the second quicker but more in-depth interview with the store manager. The first one went over different styling, selling, and customer interaction techniques (and took about an hour and a half) and the second just went over technicalities and payment offers.

Interview Question – They take personal style into account, as well as how you may help style people with different tastes from you.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Don't be shy when asking for a base hourly wage. Tell them what you think you're worth.

I applied in-person and the process took 1 week - interviewed at DSW in March 2013.

Interview Details – You must set up an online account and take the questionnaire. The questions determine how well you would fit into the culture they are creating with their values. There is no sense in answering how you think the manager wants you to. They are quickly able to tell if you have been dishonest once you get to the actual interview. The interview is set out with a manager (possibly a second) and you are asked direct questions about your past, how you can provide best customer service, etc. If you have no experience, it may be difficult to answer but try to relate it to volunteer work or possibly school.

Interview Question – How will you be objective when being approached by an angry customer?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – They start out competitively in pay. Minimum wage is okay to ask for and they will probably give you more. If you ask for too much, they will only offer what they believe you are worth based on previous experience, how long you plan on staying, etc.

I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at DSW in March 2014.

Interview Details – Immediately contacted me by email and scheduled an interview. Interview with the store manager went very well. Just asked about former experience, my favorite stores, my experience with customer service and talked about the position at DSW. Offered me a job right then and there. Then 2 weeks later I was scheduled to go to a group orientation at the store which was 4 hours and we learned everything we were suppose to know about giving customer service, signing people up for rewards, checking the shoes etc.

Interview Question – It was a casual conversation it didn't really consist of weird questions it was more of just asking me about my experience and then telling me about the company and position.   Answer Question
