Project Manager Interview

Project Manager
Verona, WI

I applied online and the process took 4 weeks - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in October 2010.

Interview Details – I was contacted online by Epic's HR, suggesting I apply for the Project manager position. There was a phone interview about a week later, and they invited me to Verona for an interview in person. So I flew out a week later, was put up at a nice hotel with 8 other prospective recruits, and taken out to dinner in a group of 2 other recruits and an employee. The next morning, we were ushered into a conference room on Epic campus in the Andromeda building, given a company overview and software demo. There was a small group interview followed by a skills assessment with a single recruiter. Next was a presentation, then lunch at Epic's cafeteria, and another, more focused 1:1 interview. A ~2-hr aptitude/intelligence test followed.

I am still waiting to hear back from Epic; it has been a week and a half. I really don't know whether they eliminate candidates one by one and call the recruits they want at the end of the two-week call window or if the process is the other way around--let's hope that barely over a week isn't a bad thing.

The campus was very nicely laid out, and employees seemed fine. An ex-employee at the airport warned me and another recruit that the company is not kid-friendly, so if we wanted to start a family, it would be tough to get enough time with them while traveling 4 days per week. Thank god I don't want kids.

Overall I like the company, and am hoping I get the call.

Interview Question – If you had to criticize someone, would you run the risk of seeming too mean or too nice?   Answer Question

The process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in July 2010.

Interview Details – The process began with an online personality test, after which I had a phone interview. I was invited to campus for a one-on-one interview, an overview of the software program, tour of the campus, etc. I was given three written tests (SAT style). A couple weeks later I was invited back to campus for a second interview, presentation, and several casual meetings with Epic employees. A week and an half later i was offered a position.

I applied through college or university and the process took a day - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in March 2010.

Interview Details – I first had an on campus behavioral interview. After this interview, I was invited to an on-site interview in Madison. While there, I had a campus tour, an overview of the software, an overview of the position I was interviewing for, a one-on-one case interview for the position, a presentation, and a final interview with the HR person. Everyone was very nice and friendly throughout the process, and I felt like I learned a lot about what I would be doing at the company through their final round interview.

Interview Question – What are 5 things that you're not?   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – I really liked the job that I interviewed for but I liked another company that I interviewed for better in terms of fit with the company.

I applied through college or university and the process took 3 days - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in March 2010.

Interview Details – Pretty much like the others have said.

First, a phone interview, basically a preliminary vetting.

Then I was invited onsite to take a skills assessment. You're graded on both time and accuracy. It's basically a baby LSAT, so if you took that, you're in good shape.

Finally, there was a day-long interview where they also introduce you to the Epic campus and product. This is where you do a case study and make a presentation, and go through a series of 1:1 interviews.

I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in February 2010.

Interview Details – I took the skills test. It was a 3 part exam with a reading, math, and skills part. It was an extremely analytical exam. The reading had a lot of analogy questions while the math part had a lot of questions that involved critical thinking skills. The last part involves learning a new computer programming software just to see how well you can follow directions.

The process took a day - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in February 2010.

Interview Details – Interview wasn't too difficult, mostly questions about my experiences and why I was interested in the position. Asked my ACT/SAT score and whether I wanted to go to grad school. I think they wanted me to say no. I could relate well with the interviewer so it was very casual and not stressful. Made me even more interested! I have my skills assessment on-site coming up next.

The process took a day - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in January 2010.

Interview Details – Was approached through school Career center where I had posted my resume. After the phone interview, I was flown out to Madison for on-site interview. Full day of getting to know the company and interviewing with a variety of people. A lot of questions based on your personality rather than past job experience. I felt like they had already decided that I was competent and was deciding if I would fit in.

Project Manager Interview

Project Manager

I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in August 2009.

Interview Details – I applied online for a position as a Project Manager, although the website has very vague job descriptions (intentionally, an employee told me) and I wasn't sure if that was exactly the best fit for me. I'm from the Milwaukee area and I had heard some good things (as well as a lot of negative things) about the company, which is why, as a recent college grad, I applied. Also, Madison is a great city, and I'd love to live there.

After I submitted my application, I was contacted within a couple of days about taking an online personality test and setting up a phone interview. The interview was pretty easy--it lasted only about a half an hour and the woman I spoke with was very nice. The personality test was a little strange. I'm not sure if they turn down people based solely on their responses to it, but I hope they don't, because I don't think it could possibly give them much useful information about the applicant.

A few days after the phone interview, I was emailed and asked to set up an on-site interview. The facilities are very nice, although it is way further outside of Madison than I had expected. Everyone I spoke to was friendly. And very young. I was given a quick, very uninformative tour and a company overview. Then I met with an HR person and had a rather short interview. He pretty much only asked situational questions. I would say it went pretty well, but then again he was so enthusiastic about literally everything I said/life in general, it was kind of hard to tell. After the interview I took three self-proctored tests, which took a little less than two hours, and were kind of tricky but nothing terrible.

Interview Question – Describe a time you had to be assertive.   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – The whole place gave me a weird vibe, to be honest. And mostly, I decided I wasn't terribly interested in working at a place with such an insane turn over rate.

The process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in July 2009.

Interview Details – 1 - Personality test. Online, maybe 30 minutes. Series of multiple choice answers where you must select the answer most like your personality. Answers keep getting narrowed down until only one "least like you" answer remains.
2 - Phone interview. This is done by a HR screener, maybe 10 minutes. Focus on saying as little as possible. Goal is to not give them a reason to throw you out. Walked through my last three jobs and asked what I like most, hated most, and why I left. Asked about salary requirement and would not budge until I gave a response.
3 - Skills/IQ test. Proctored test, about 1-2 hours.

Interview Question – What did you hate most about your last job?   View Answer

Reason for Declining – I read on glassdoor that everyone works 60 hours/week and this was not satisfactory with the salary offer.

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Epic Systems Corporation in January 2007.

Interview Details – I was asked to complete a phone interview and "logic" test. The test has two parts. One is basic logic, the second is basic programming logic. The programming portion is not technical, and can be done by anyone, its just an evaluation of your ability to comprehend new arbitrary rule sets. Next is an onsite interview where you're asked to do a 10 min. presentation to a group on any topic you choose. This is to evaluate your presentation skills, and should focus on concisely and logically presenting a topic to the panel as if you're introducing them to the subject for the first time (not teaching them, just introducing them to something new). Be prepared to answer a lot of questions during the presentation. The one on one interview are all about your ability to manage projects, and are mostly situational.

Epic is notorious for formula's. You are hired or denied based on a combination of your test scores, your college GPA (weighted depending on the reputation of your college), and the evaluators marks on your in person interviews. Accordingly, you need not apply unless your GPA is good for your school (3.5 and above for most people is probably a fair assumption) and you can handle doing well on a test unprepared. You can always exaggerate your GPA if you're worried that you might be below the bar.

Interview Question – The interview went through and asked what each on of my references would say is my greatest weakness and strength.   View Answer

Negotiation Details – There isn't any chance for negotiation. All new hires start with the same salary offer depending on your position. If you have relevant expertise, such as work history in the medical field or programming skills you should receive a higher offer, but I suspect that's set through a pre determined formula and not negotiation.
