    Software Development Engineer Interview

    Anonymous Employee in Bellevue, WA
    No Offer
    Positive Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 3 daysinterviewed at Expedia (Bellevue, WA) in October 2007.

    Interview

I went to my university's career fair and spoke with the recruiter there. I got a call from the recruiter that night, and scheduled an interview with him the next day. From that interview, I began speaking with an Expedia recruiter to schedule an in-person interview loop in the Expedia building in Bellevue. I had a 4 person interview loop, all consisting of technical interviews with lots of problem-solving on a whiteboard. Then at the end I had a wrap-up with my recruiter, Katy.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 1 dayinterviewed at Expedia in May 2010.

    Interview

The job description was extremely vague in terms of the requirements - they really wanted to have a number cruncher, however, the position description suggested the senior business analyst would be an individual who liaised with different segments of the company and external suppliers. They should have clearly stated that SQL and other specific database query experience was required for the position. It was a positive experience in terms of politeness of the inteviewers. I did a round of 3 different interviews lasting approximately 40 minutes each - perhaps the problem was the recruiter who selected me for the interview. I was very disappointed to have wasted so much time preparing and interviewing when they did not describe the position accurately.

    Customer Service Interview

Anonymous Employee in Las Vegas, NV
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeksinterviewed at Expedia (Las Vegas, NV) in February 2013.

    Interview

I did not actually get an interview with Expedia however I had quite an experience. Recently they opened a Tier 3 customer service vacancy in Las Vegas, NV , me and one of my best friends applied. I have such a long experience with travel agencies for so long and specially in all the software and GDS travel systems that Expedia uses. All of those skills were demonstrated in the resume. I waited for any communication from their side but had none. Only my friend -who was also a previous subordinate of mine and has far less experience- got an interview and an offer and when I asked him he revealed to me honestly that he has a connection in the HR department who arranged it for him. I was so frustrated that I did not at least get that protocol regular courtesy email to tell me that they have reviewed my resume and chose to go with other candidates. After that experience I decided that I wont look for any opportunities in that company because the way their HR is handling their business does not make me comfortable working in such an environment.

    Interview

I applied online for a DC position, and had a first round phone interview. Immediately after the phone interview, I was told the DC position had been filled, but they wanted to consider me for other locations. I then had several more phone interviews for different locations, before going out to the Dallas office and having four in-person interviews. Was notified a week later about the outcome.

    Market Associate Interview

    Anonymous Employee in Dallas, TX

    Neutral Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ weeksinterviewed at Expedia (Dallas, TX) in April 2013.

    Interview

I applied online and used my Linked In profile to apply. Within days, I noticed a recruiter from the company viewed my profile. I was contacted via email to set up my first phone interview. I had my FIRST phone interview. It lasted about 35 minutes and was the generic HR prescreen. The recruiter spoke mostly about what the position called for with a HEAVY HEAVY stress on sales which is a different feel from the posted job description. She scheduled me for a second phone interview which was later rescheduled by the interviewer because she was under the weather. That second phone interview lasted about 50-60 minutes. You are put totally on the spot to provide a role play situation of what you would do if the position was yours. Super uncomfortable and unexpected but I fought through it. Apparently, it well as they scheduled me for an in person interview for 3 hours at their office with 3 different people.

    QA Engineer Interview

    Anonymous Employee in Bellevue, WA

    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency – interviewed at Expedia (Bellevue, WA).

    Interview

I had an initial phone screening by HR, followed by a phone interview with one manager and then was asked to interview in person. The in-person interview was 4-5 successive 1-hour interviews. This covered both technical questions, test concepts and inter-personal questions. There was a period of 5-10 minutes between interviews when I believe interviewers conferred to determine whether the candidate would continue in the interview process. I felt the interview was professional and my performance met expectations.

    Interview Questions

    • In the first interview, the application architecture was explained and diagrammed on a whiteboard. That was all that was said regarding it during that interview; the diagram was erased at the end of that interview. The next interviewer came in and asked me to diagram the application architecture. I was able to recall approximately 90%. I felt this demonstrated whether the candidate listens, learns quickly and is able to comprehend the level of complexity of Expedia's test environments.   1 Answer

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3+ weeksinterviewed at Expedia (Geneva (South Africa)) in March 2013.

    Interview

2 interviews that did not reflected at all my skills and capabilities: They were too academic oriented and definately too far from day to day working skills. Therefore, 20 mns after the phone call, with pressure loss and with little google help, I was able to find all answers with no difficulties. Smart people doesn’t learn by heart solutions, but create solutions (I was assuming Expedia was looking for smart people) Questions: 1_ What is Referential integrity? 2_ What is Entity integrity? 3_ What is correlated sub-query? 4_ How to find differences between 2 queries 5_ How to implement 1-1 1-many and many-many relation? 6_ Difference between PK and Uniq Key? 7_ Difference between clustered, non-clustured index? 8_ What does mean ‘no lock’ expression? 9_ Difference between Delete and truncate? 10_ Different join possible in SQL-server? 11_ What is a deadlock? 12_ What is an entity relationship Diagram? Second phone interview: 1_ A table with column employee and a column ‘salary’ How to get the name of the fourth most paid employee (see big data solution) 2_ How to remove duplicates data in table with no PK (see big data solution) 3_ Difference between delete and truncate on SQL server 4_ 2 tables sharing same PK. Table A: id 1 and 2, Table B: id 2 and 4 Query listing id in table A but not in table B (in our example –> id 1 only)

Senior Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Expedia (Gurgaon, Haryana (India)).

    Interview

I know Expedia is a great brand in US but in India I feel recruiters are making it worst. I applied through job site and got a call directly from the recruiter. It was a for Gurgaon, India location. Faced 2 telephonic technical interview. After my 2nd interview I got an email from recruiter that next will be F2F interview and he will inform me when I have to come. Then it almost like 3 weeks and I haven't received any reply from him. So I sent and email for the update. No reply again. Then finally I called him and he told me they have hired someone from local. He don't have any etiquette to at least reply on the email. Expedia is a great brand and every candidate prepare a lot for the interview. Please at least give respect for those preparation.

    Interview

I had a very bad experience with Expedia. I submitted my resume through a friend who got hired in expedia..Got a call from them...first telephonic interview went well...i messed up my second round..so was said 'No'..ok accepted till now... But then again HR calls up after 15 days for other rounds of interviews...this time i had 4 back to back telephonic interviews in a week (each about 45-60 min)...out of these 4, 2 were taken by product manger in Seattle on skype.. I was in NCR region...after these 4 rounds I was called for F2F... F2F was really bad/horrible/awful experience.. I had initial one round of technical interview by 2 team members which went WELL and then they send in the Director to interview me. After series of technical interviews for about 3 weeks I thought this will be kind of the relaxed round..I didnt expect director to grill me technically after 7 rounds already done. To my utter dismay this turned out to be other technical round. My mind was fully exhausted by now, I didnt even feel like answering ..it was like how much are you going to evaluate me..after series of about 7 int, u still are grilling me...Director even went to records and said that your skill are still not that sharp.. In my mind I thought what were you evaluating me for till these rounds that now you are now realising my skills are not that sharp.. Anyways i will still like to mention all those repetitive ques i was asked over the several int - .net, sql, coded ui tool related - 1) What are interfaces? 2) What is operator overloading, method overloading 3) Abstract classes, virtual classes, difference b/w them 4) ques related to .net libraries like how will will you open a file (System.IO namespace and all) 5) Exception Handling 6) Wcf servies/proxy concepts 7) Codedui tool concepts - object repository, recognizing an object 8) string reversal program 9) Simple insert/select/join queries Interviews that I had with prod managers were process related mainly or were analytical 1) what is agile, scrum concepts 2) how will you test a travel website ..what all scenarios Director went to ask me ques that were too complex for me - Singleton classes, finding a card from deck of cards This is all I can remember from series of interviews that happened.
