    Senior Program Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Bellevue, WA

    Application Details

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2+ monthsinterviewed at Expedia in November 2013.

    Interview Details

Step 1 - Phone screen with a recruiter. This was a basic 10 minute chat.
Step 2 - Call with Hiring manager. The HM missed our first call which resulted in lost personal time I had used for the interview. Had to reschedule with them.
Step 3 - In person group interview. Met with 7 people at Expedia's office. Overall the experience was disorganized and disappointing. First, they never sent me detail on the JD as I had requested, so I went into the in person interview blind. Second, they bumped up my interview start time by an hour and did not notify me until a couple hours before my interview, which caused me to rush out of my current job and get there in time. Interview was also not set up with the hiring manager, so they had to reschedule some of my sessions so they could fit the manager in. Then, while in the middle of spending the afternoon interviewing they said they were also going to do a couple more phone screens. Very surprised that they couldn't gain the necessary opinions in the time already allotted and this stretched the process out over several more weeks.
Step 4 - Two more phone screens
Never heard back from them. No feedback whatsoever, not even an official decline. In total, invested a lot of personal time over many days for this process and two follow up emails were ignored. I don't mind not getting the job, but a formal notification to close the loop, especially after the negative experience, would have been professional.

    Interview Questions

    Application Details

I applied through college or university. The process took 4 weeksinterviewed at Expedia.

    Interview Details

    Applied through college career fair.

    1. one simple question immediately in career fair. (How can you find the common element of two linked list?)

    2. Then I got a contact by recruiter within a week and scheduled phone interview.
    - short questions for my resume
    - simple coding question (sorry forgot. )
    - what is generic and its advantage

They wanted to checking if there is any hiring in Data Warehousing team since I have strong machine learning background. But it turns out there is no opporrunity in data teams, so they scheduled one more interview for developer position.

    3. one more phone interview.
    - challenging project
    - Given input list A and B, return non-common items from each list
    follow up: design test cases

    Senior Product Manager Interview

I applied online. The process took 6 weeksinterviewed at Expedia in November 2013.

Specific role: Sr. PM of Social. The interview consisted of: 1 Phone Screener with Hiring Director, 2 On-site Interviews with SF Office (Eng Lead and Program Management), 2 Phone Interviews with Social Media manager and Analytics, 1 Phone Interview with Global VP PM. Early-on the process was expedited; however, several interview participants were late to the calls (including the Social Media Manager that was 20 minutes late and jumped on to the call while driving into work thus ending the call 15 minutes early due to reception issues). The Interview process was not structured at all - most questions were around what my experiences were and what I thought social meant for the Travel industry (Expedia does not seem to know either and believes 3rd party reviews is the best social signal to mine). The culture believes in failing fast yet their release cycles indicate otherwise. Leadership-wise you will not find any MBA/Google/Facebook pedigree within the Product team which speaks to how quickly their share erodes to the competitors. The best candidate will not come in with ground-breaking feature ideas but simply know how to execute given top-down strategy. The role seems more of Project Management than Product Management. The HR Recruiter also failed to respond to any request for progress (she took 14+ days to respond to request for an update). On another request for an update, she took 7 days to reply and blamed Sr Mgmt for the lack of response when likely they were interviewing other candidates. The slow process likely reflects how it is like to work within a non-agile environment there.

First round was a general HR screening, where I was briefed about the companies policies and benefits followed by a brief discussion about my background. After about 1 week, I scheduled for a technical phone interview. I was asked questions related to CSS and javascript.

Tier III Customer Service Representative Interview

    Interview Details

I applied for the position online and was contacted by HR a month later thru email. I was invited to a job fair for the next step in the interview process. I also had to fill out some paperwork that was emailed to me and that needed to be turned in at the job fair. I sent an email back with the time that I would be able to meet. There were about 4 different time slots available.

When I arrived at Expedia there were 3 other applicants interviewing for the position. I gave the HR Manager my paperwork and too a seat. She was very pleasant. We then went into a room where we watched a video that highlighted the growth of Expedia and their beginnings. The HR Mgr covered the perks and benefits that Expedia had to offer. Then the manager for the Tier 3 Customer Svc Rep Ctr went into depth about the position. I then had two interviews. Pretty much the same questions. Why Expedia? As well as behavioral questions (STAR) format. I did have to do some basic navigation on the computer. Unless you have never touched a computer in your life you should be just fine. Very simple. But I would like to point out that being on the computer is a huge part of this position and working with customers. After my interviews I was told I would receive a call from HR within a week or two if selected for the position. Waiting on call back. Very confident I did well and will receive a job offer.

    Interview Questions
    • Nothing unexpected. Typical professional job interview. Expedia is very laid back in their call center and allow you to wear jeans, tennis shoes etc. That being said, for your interview please dress professionally like you are going to an interview and that you want a job.   Answer Question

I applied online – interviewed at Expedia.

    Interview Details

Looked for a position on their website. Applied via website. T/C from HR worker who asked general questions as they related to the position. She asked for salary info and I said I would like $30,000 per yr. She said that was high but doable. I was called in for a face to face interview with 2 supervisors. Every one seems to be under 40 years old and I am still waiting for the callback but I think I am too old (56) for them.

    Extremely long and difficult interview process. By far the most difficult interview process I have ever had. Make sure to study and understand the industry as if you already work in it, if you don't. Had three interviews of the exact same tedious questions, just by different people;
