I applied through college or university and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at ExxonMobil in October 2012.

Interview Details – Applied through the career center at my school. Got an interview on campus the day before the career fair. They interviewed a TON of people it seemed and my interviewer was extremely laid back. He asked a few questions and the entire interview only took about 20 minutes. About two weeks later I received a call for a phone screening with no prior notification other than an email that I had been referred to hiring managers. The questions were mainly to make sure my interests lined up with the position they were trying to fill. I was told I would hear back from them within a week if they wanted to continue the process. I got a call the next day and scheduled a flight for early the next week. I was driven around and saw various areas of Houston and had dinner with newer employees the night before the interview. The day of the interview I had 4 interviews with people in my potential group and 1 cross-functional interview. I had a benefits presentation with HR then met with my manager and was given an offer on the spot. The interviews were laid back and not very many "STAR" questions but just trying to get to know me and make sure my interests lined up with the job.

Interview Question – Tell me about yourself   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiation. Very strong starting salary and benefits.

I applied through college or university and the process took a day - interviewed at ExxonMobil in November 2011.

Interview Details – One interview that lasted roughly 1 hour. The questions were very subjective which consisted primarily of behavioral and situational questions (i.e., describe a time when you had to deal with a stressful situation, ... a time when you didn't know the answer, ... deal with ambiguity).

Overall, it was an easy interview.

Interview Question – Describe a time when you had to design a system to solve a problem.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 4 days - interviewed at ExxonMobil in November 2010.

Interview Details – EM had an info session, first interview was at my uni, one-on-one consisting of mostly behavioural questions. 2nd interview was with HR Recruiter, mostly discussion of resume. The third and fourth interviews were with specific people in the department. The third interview was very informal, general. The fourth interview was the toughest with harder behavioural questions. Once done, the recruiter called to inform me of my offer.

Interview Question – Tell me about a time you failed to succeed at something, and how you coped with it.   View Answer

The process took 1 week - interviewed at ExxonMobil in September 2008.

Interview Details – I was hired from an on-campus job fair. The interview included a lot of hypothetical "what would you do" type questions. I was given a brief overview of the company and asked whether or not I would rather work in Upstream or Downstream. Even though I said I would rather work in Upstream they were clearly only recruiting for Downstream. If you are looking for a specific position you should VERY EXPLICITLY state it.

Interview Questions

  • Give an example of a time when you were the on a team and your group members were not contributing. What did you do?   Answer Question
  • How do you deal with problems that seem like there are no solutions at first?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – I did not choose to negotiate.

I applied through college or university and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at ExxonMobil in January 2008.

Interview Details – I got the interview through university career fair. First round was at my university 1:1 with a recruiter. Questions asked was all behavioral and very fair and straight forward. They will gauge your interest and recommend you for a specific group for a final round. Final round is on site. They will fly you in the night before and bring a "buddy" that will host you while you are on site. Hotel they put you in is top notch, and so is the dinner the night before. Day of interview involves multiple 1:1 interviews with managers in the group. Again, all questions are behavioral.

Interview Question – Please describe a time where you had to convince a group of your idea and how you handled the situation.   Answer Question

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at ExxonMobil in April 2009.

Interview Details – I was contacted by the recruitment agency and had an initial phone interview. After one week they called me and told me to come for an interview in ExxonMobil. It took around 1.5 hour. I was interviewed by HR representant and Manager of Engineering team. HR asked typical questions: describe a situation when you had a problem with your collegue, and how you handled it, describe a situation when you had to make a difficult decision, describe a situation when you had to cooperate with the others to accomplish a task... Manager asked questions related to the position and checking my knowledge. They also asked me in the end why I chose ExxonMobil.

Interview Question – Describe a situation when you had to make a split second decision   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – You can negotiate within reasonable limits. They asked me what were my financial expectations.
I told them "around XXX but I am flexible because I like the position". And in the end I got even more :)
If they ask you about your financial expectations try to be precise and give a reason (e.g. I live out of the city and would have to commute everyday, etc)
