    I attended a group interview posted on a store billboard. Why not? The billboard said, "Hiring managers. No experience needed. Just smiles". I was the only intelligent one among the group, as I replied to the questions with professional, intelligent responses. The universal question, "Why do you want to work here?" was a breeze, of course. One girl responded with, "I like movies". Seriously? Why are you even here? As I shook the manager's hand, she said she'd call us back by 5 pm the next day. I received a call within 15 minutes of leaving the store. That was promising! They scheduled a testing session for me two days later. The test was difficult, requiring a comprehensive knowledge of college math. I understand being a manager should require more than a GED, but goodness, they were expecting high standards. I passed, interestingly enough, and they scheduled a third interview with the district managers two days later. I had to drive 40 minutes to meet the manager. That was inconvenient, but okay. Very nice lady, but as I finally got to ask the questions I needed, I realized something. This company was hiding some important facts. She basically told me that it would be extremely difficult to become a store manager anytime soon if I wasn't relocatable to anywhere in the United States. Seriously? I have a life, family, obligations. I can't just up and move anytime you want for 30,000 a year. I don't think so. Also, they wanted me to commute 30 minutes each direction a day. Assistant managers only make 11 dollars an hour and work the 44 hours minimum a week. I don't think so. I'm going to continue college so I don't have to work my butt off for barely above minimum wage.

    Initial interview with a store manager asks basic questions about your home life, personal and professional goals. A test is given that is actually a bit of a challenge as it is timed and within the chaotic store. A second interview with a district manager does the same and then a third interview is offered with the regional manager who will ask slightly more difficult questions but no real curve balls.

    The hiring/interview process was rather generic. First you interview with the store manager followed interviews with the district and regional manager. The interview questions we nothing difficult and seemed to just be a way to get to know you. I did feel like my interviewer(s) talked more during the interview than I did. Having interviewed many individuals myself, this is something I try to avoid. However, I didn't mind in this case because it took me out of the spot light.

    It's time to share the worst interview I have ever been in!

    I applied online for a store in Indianapolis. I met with the Manager, Assistant Manager, and current Manager in Training. I was impressed with all three of them and was excited to meet the Carla, the District Manager in Indianapolis for the final interview. While none of my other interviews had been longer than 15 minutes, I was expecting Carla to be a little more professional. I was shocked when the interview was over after only 16 minutes.

    We shook hands and sat down in the video game section for my interview.
    She verified that I had been told about the manager in training program and that MIT was the position I was most interested in. Once I confirmed that, she slightly shook her head and said she wished the store managers wouldn't have told me about this position since I have no experience. She let me know that a great personality doesn't make you able to work in retail. She has been in retail for almost 12 years and know what it takes. She let me know that I would have to prove myself. After being thrown off by those comments we kept going.
    I asked if I could start out as part time until I could prove myself. She responded with the most inappropriate comments I have ever heard in a professional setting; "If hired, you will only be part-time. Which is minimum wage and a maximum of 28 hours. We can't offer more hours because of Obamacare, so you can thank Obama for that."
    I was done with this interview. Politics have no place in a business setting, especially not an INTERVIEW!
    We shook hands and I got up and left. I knew then I had no intention of working for Family Video under Carla as my DM. Whether I support our President or not, I knew that this was a terrible business practice.

    Maybe she would have offered me a job if I had shown interest in her Obamacare remarks. I'd rather be unemployed than get a job becuase of inappropriate behavior in an interview.
    I didn't share my political beliefs because of her views being the same or different from mine, but because it is wrong to do in a professional setting. She might have 12 years of retail experience, but has no skills in a professional setting.

    I knew I would start out at part time earning minimum wage, and was willing to until I met Carla.

    I was driving through town and, on a whim, decided to apply. They explained that the Manager in Training position came with relocation, which I SORELY needed. After the initial Store Manager interview, I was to take a written test that took about 50 minutes. A combo of math, spelling, organizing skills you need to demonstrate in order to do the job well. After that I had an interview with the DM and then the RM. Once that happened, I was hired!

    Like most reviews here, the first interview is in store in the aisle next the the restroom with 2 chairs. Very informal but it's okay. Basic questions (more about your personality than actual behavioral questions) and from there I went to take the infamous test. The big thing is to answer the ones you know and skip the long and tedious ones till the end. I forgot what they said was the passing percentage is but I passed. Few days later I met with the actual DM and later the RM, still basic questions (actually very similar to the SM questions). They called back and offer me the job but...

    Went through all interviews and test, which I scored high. After all interviews, and taking my 18 years of management experience and proven track record in account, the manager called to offer me a MIT position at 8.25 hr. Highly insulted and upset that they made me go through a screening process fit for a corporate position in Chicago and then offer me such a sad wage.

    The interview is pretty easy, they look for fun, freindly, outgoing personality. Make sure that you dress proffessional, even to go ask about an application in store. The test is pretty tough, I've seen a lot of people not take it seriously and fail. Its like a mini SAT, so be ready for that.

    I filled out a basic online application and attached a resume for a management position. The very next day, the manager of the local store I applied to contacted me. We scheduled an initial, in-person interview for later that week. I arrived dressed in a suit and interviewed with her at the counter. The interview was really just a screening with ridiculously easy questions, it lasted less than 10 minutes. She later explained about the MIT position; it starts on an hourly basis that equates to $26,000/year, then becomes a salaried position at $28,000/year, then one is assigned their own store and can expect something in the $30,000+ range, depending on volume (managers receive 1% commission for each sale). She was clear that the position would involve moving in order to operate your own store.

    Next, we scheduled a time for the intelligence test. It consisted of 8 sections timed anywhere from 4-11 minutes. It took about an hour, and contained alphabetizing tasks, reading comprehension, spotting the differences between 2 similar lists, and arithmetic problems. I think the arithmetic problems also test prioritization, as you can't possibly finish it all.. they simply take too long (questions like: 986 x 1248 or 'find the square root of 1207). You need to complete the easy ones first to maximize your score.

    We scheduled an interview at a different store in the district the following week. I was to meet with the District Manager. This store was busier, and had a tanning salon attached to the building. We interviewed in the aisles and this one took about 12 mins. Despite interviewing in the aisle, the manager was personable and professional. He wore a shirt and tie, with no jacket. A suit would definitely be appropriate for a candidate to wear here. He asked some standard questions, and explained that he'd be contacting those who are going to move forward to the next step (ie. get hired) by Monday (this was a Friday interview).

    I never got a call.
