Visual Merchandiser Interview

Visual Merchandiser
Orange, CA

I applied in-person and the process took a day - interviewed at Forever 21 in June 2014.

Interview Details – Saw an open call for a job fair for their store. When I arrived I was one of many who showed up for the open call. They had us stand in line in the hot sun and were to wait until it was our turn to be interviewed. I was dressed in a professional manor and was surprised to find most of the other candidates were in jeans???? When it was my turn to interview, I was sat at a table with another interviewee but we were being interviewed individually by our own interviewer. The questions were basic and the interview lasted only 5 minutes because they were trying to get through the line. This type of interview is hard because they cannot go into depth to see if you'd be a likely candidate for the position. I think the interviewers main concern was that I was unsure of my availability because I have another job. I told her that if I was to be hired for the Visual position I would quit my current job.

I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Forever 21.

Interview Details – i had two interview both were pretty unprofessional - first interview was with 2 others and was interviewed on the sales floor (can be distracting) then asked to put an outfit together. The person that interviewed us was fairly new to the senior role which showed through the interview process. 2nd interview was held in the changing room with stock everywhere and people sorting out stock, was asked very basic questions and then asked to put three outfits together.

I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Forever 21 in August 2013.

Interview Details – I filled out an application form online and received a call from the Field Manager the very next morning. He was very pleased with my résumé and fixed up an appointment for 2 days later. Since I wasn't in town, I called him back to reschedule the appointment, which he readily did. He gave me accurate directions down to which form of public transport to use at which stops/ stations. Once I arrived he made me feel welcome with a nice comment on my attire and then we spoke for a half hour or so on my qualifications and experience. After that I had a detailed floor walk and a 40 minute "pick 3 complete ensembles" activity which all Forever 21 interviewees go through. He then walked me to the door and said I'd hear from him soon.

I applied in-person and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Forever 21 in February 2013.

Interview Details – Applied online, then stopped in the store a few days later to inquire about the position. Was told they never received my application, but after asking about my past employment experience, set up an interview anyway. I came back a few days later for the interview. I arrived a few minutes early, and was then told to wait 10-15 minutes after my interview was scheduled to start. Interview was casual, but slightly awkward as it was held outside the store on a bench. Overall process was normal- plenty of questions about inspiration, strengths, weaknesses, style, why I wanted to work there, etc. Nothing too out of the ordinary. The two managers who interviewed me came off as slightly intimidating, but turned out to be pretty nice during the process. Definitely show your personal style- look nice, but don't dress too stuffy or business professional.

Interview Question – What is your least favorite part of visual merchandising? (I found this difficult to answer without sounding negative, especially because I love merchandising.)   View Answer

I interviewed at Forever 21 in September 2009.

Interview Details – I applied in the store and spoke to the manager who told me they were hiring a Visual Merchandiser. He briefly asked me a few questions, then called me back for a longer interview where I was asked to put two different looks together. I then had an interview with two senior hiring managers who asked me questions like "What's a current trend that you love?"

The process took a day - interviewed at Forever 21 in September 2009.

Interview Details – I came into the Forever 21 on Michigan Ave and introduced myself to the other visual merchandisers who were working on a display. I let them know I was here to interview and one of them went to grab their manager. They kind of seemed a bit cliquish, but maybe that was normal for someone approaching that type of situation. They had me put together three separate looks and once I was done they had me describe the looks and asked me questions about who would wear the looks, where they would wear it to, how would their hair and makeup be.

Then they left me to go look at the various areas of the store so I could see how it was merchandised. Someone returned, I don't think it was the manager, but another person, and she asked me what I noticed throughout the store and how I would merchandise a specific area differently.

Afterwards we sat and discussed the position and working for the company. It was one of the longest processes I had ever been through. I don't think I was a good fit for the company and I was not offered the position and probably would never apply there again. I have no issues with the company, but I think people who are really giddy and enthused about trends would do well in this type of environment...and thats just not me.

The process took a day - interviewed at Forever 21 in May 2012.

Interview Details – I showed up, had an interviewed with the DM and visual merchandiser. The DM was the one asking questions and pretty much catered the questions to my resume and experience. She asked questions like "where I get my ideas for merchandising from" and "what trends do I think will be big for summer". After the interview I was told to pick out three outfits in 20 min. Each outfit was of a different trend. This included clothes, accessories, shoes, handbags, everything. After the 20 min. I met up with her in the back and talked to her about why I chose the items I did and explain the outfits.
I had an interview with a diff. visual merchandiser in a diff. mall that same day and the interview process was kinda the same but 10 times easier. Just had to pick one outfit and that was it. I got that one, but it was too far away from where I lived so decided to turn it down.
The pay isn't that good either... It was around $12-13/hr.

The process took 8 weeks - interviewed at Forever 21 in May 2011.

Interview Details – The interviewer was so unprofessional she forgot I had an appointment. She pawned me off on an assistant manager or maybe even a sales person. I completed the full interview consisiting of behavioral questions, walked around the outside of the store and suggested improvements to the mannequins and the walked around the store and was asked how I would change things, then asked to compose two outfits, one I would wear and one I would suggest to a client. The hiring manager then called me two months later to set up an interview. She thought this was the first time she contacted me. I let her know I had already interviewed and rather than apologize for the mic up, she simply said she wanted to meet with me in person. I was looking for a career not just a job and didn't want to waste anymore of my time. I decided they were way to unprofessional and unorganized to even consider as a potential employeer. Good luck to anyone having to interview with this joke of a process.

Interview Question – How would you change the appearance of the mannequins.   Answer Question
