Retail Sales Associate at Goodwill

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Arcadia, CA Apr 2013 – Reviewed Apr 6, 2013

Interview Details – This was my first interview/job offer ever...
Completed the application online and was called about two hours later. Scheduled an interview for the next day. I got there 15 minutes early and so the manager decided to start early. She asked about 5 questions. The generic ones like tell me about yourself, why goodwill and strenghts and weaknesses. Then she brought in her assistance to ask me if i had a car and if I was punctual and those sort of things. The interview lasted about 30 minutes. Both interviewers were extremely friendly which helped. They also made it evident that they were understaffed and even though I knew they were interviewing others they made me feel like I would be hired. I was called like 3 hours after the interview to inform me that I had the position.

Sales Associate at Goodwill

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Feb 2013 – Reviewed Mar 6, 2013

Interview Details – Easiest interview I've ever been on. The manager was new and nervous, so he didn't really ask me questions. He told me about Goodwill's mission and then asked me what my past work experience is, and if I had experience in retail. I don't, so I said no. I then asked a few questions, which he appreciated. I then got a tour of the backrooms and he described what goes on in each section. All the employees seemed friendly, but just a note: Goodwill hires a variety of people, including disabled people (physically and mentally). So if you are uncomfortable with that, I would suggest not applying or interviewing. After the tour, the manager said he would call later that day to set up an orientation time/date. The interview literally lasted for 30 minutes, most of which we talked about personal things.

Interview Question – Have you ever worked in retail before?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – There is no negotiation. When I initially talked to the manager on the phone he said, "You'll be making 8.25/hr. Is that okay?"

Retail Coordinator at Goodwill

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Willowbrook, IL Dec 2012 – Reviewed Dec 15, 2012

Interview Details – I was contacted by a recruiter. I did one 30-45 minute phone interview, and then one face-to-face interview that lasted around 30-45 minutes as well. The two recruiters and manager that I spoke with were extremely nice. They seem to believe in mission and are very welcoming. I asked each person about how they like working for the company, and they seemed genuine when they said they loved working their. Both said it's the best place for good work-life balance, and that they couldn't see themselves working anywhere else.

Negotiation Details – I didn't try to negotiate. They gave me all of the information and I was happy with the offer. They pay more, and have more benefits than I expected.

Bed Bath and Beyond/Management at Goodwill

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Palm Desert, CA – Reviewed Dec 9, 2012

Interview Details – I filled out an application in store, turned it in,and 1 week later received a call from the customer service supervisor asking me to come in for an interview. Mind you my application says for management or supervisor. This guy tried to have me come in as a sales associate. He told me all their employees start off at the bottom and work their way up. Not sure if I believe him. Interview was about 15 minutes long.

Interview Question – Very simple questions. Tell me about your experience? Why did you leave ???   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – Tried to get me to go in as a sales associate starting at minimum wage even though I have an extensive retail management background experience as well as a bachelors degree. I think the guy was looking for good reliable employees. Weird. I am better than a sales associate. What a waist of my time.
