Assistant Canvass Director at Grassroots Campaigns, Inc.

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Pittsburgh, PA May 2010 – Reviewed Mar 18, 2013

Interview Details – One phone interview and then one in person interview. The phone interview was not that difficult, very basic stuff, the in person interview was a little bit more challenging. They want to know about leadership and organizing experience. Previous campaign experience is also a huge plus. Describing leadership qualities with concrete examples helps too.

Interview Question – Please describe a time when you had to organize a large group of people.   Answer Question

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Kansas City, MO Sep 2012 – Reviewed Feb 20, 2013

Interview Details – At first it was hard to get a hold of the office directors to schedule the interview. Once I did get a hold of them there was a basic informative pseudo interview done over the phone which was pretty easy and friendly. The face to face interview was very friendly and fair, they really just wanted to get to know my motivations for the job and any experience (not necessarily canvassing) but with the issues that they would be talking about and centering the work on. They let me know right on the spot if I had the job or not. Everyone there was friendly, welcoming, and I got to meet some of the other office members who were equally nice and welcoming.

Interview Question – there were no difficult questions really.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – the most difficult thing about the entire process was the "staffing period" where you had to raise a certain quota to make staff and be fully hired. Not to say that meeting that initial goal was difficult (I actually raised 3 times the base quota amount). As long as you work hard you will make staff.

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Berkeley, CA Apr 2012 – Reviewed Feb 8, 2013

Interview Details – I first encountered the company at a career fair at my university. After chatting with them for a little bit they signed me up for an interview the following day at their local office. I came dressed in business-formal attire even though my interviewer was dressed quite a bit more casually. The process was pretty straight-forward; she asked me a couple questions about my resume and why I was interested in this job in particular. After the interview was over she explained that they were looking to hire on more field managers and explained the pay method for that position, and offered me the job on the spot. I accepted immediately.

Interview Question – What would you say if you were trying to persuade someone who seemed hesitant about the cause you were advocating?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – salary not negotiable

Assistant Canvass Director at Grassroots Campaigns, Inc.

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Washington, DC Aug 2008 – Reviewed Oct 3, 2012

Interview Details – I applied online and received a call from a National Recruiter. We set up a time for an initial phone interview, which lasted about 30 minutes. We talked about politics, the company, the position and my experience. Then, I was invited to a second in-person interview in the Washington DC. office. This interview lasted an hour and focused more on my leadership experience and ability to do the job.

Interview Question – Overall, there were a lot of follow up questions to get at my experiences. They were oriented around positions where I took on a lot of responsibility/leadership. The questions also focused on my ability to manage a staff and in particular motivate a team.   Answer Question

Problem with this interview?

Assistant Canvass Director at Grassroots Campaigns, Inc.

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Chicago, IL Mar 2012 – Reviewed Jun 26, 2012

Interview Details – I submitted my resume and received an email a few days later that they would like to interview me and questioned whether I was still interested. I said yes I was so they set up a phone interview just 2 or 3 days after I said yes. They phone interview was fairly casual. They asked about my past experiences, they liked that I had past volunteer recruitment experience, that I had good communication skills, and that I was aware of current political issues. She even asked for some current events that had sparked my interest. This was a surprise question and was hard to answer because I blanked out! Even with this awkward moment, they requested I do a "Skype" interview with the National Recruitment Director. He asked me a few questions and basically (in my opinion) already had decided he wanted me hired but still waited a few days to tell me. During this interview he would just tell me about the company, what to expect, and a typical week or day in the office. It's kind of shady because it seems like there is a lot of information that they just brush over. For example more of the pay information, time off, etc. They make it sound like you are committing every waking moment to their company. This is something you need to clarify if you only want to work 5 days a week, they expect you to work 6 days a week from 9 AM to 10 pm EVERY DAY. It's simply unrealistic.
