    Systems Architect Interview

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at HARMAN in November 2014.

    Interview Details

This company really has a horrible interview process and a very unorganized HR department. Interviewed for a systems architect job in Detroit. Received a call from the company just a day after posting my resume. Went through a phone interview and I thought it went really well. The interviewer said I was being recommended for an onsite interview.

Days later I receive an automated email that says I have been "Selected" for an onsite interview, but I never receive a date, time, location, etc. At 10am one morning, I email the HR contact and she informs me that the interview is at 1pm and she forgot to send the email! I had to rush over to the interview building in my work clothes to complete the interview, which went very well.

I was then scheduled for a third phone interview with a colleague in Europe. At this point I am basically answering the same questions that were asked in the first two interviews. Very aggravating. Overall the third interview goes very well and I was expecting a call from HR to discuss an offer. HR calls me and leaves a voicemail (they can't even get my first name right and it is the most common name in the English language...grrr). They decide to schedule a fourth phone interview!

At this point I feel like I am just wasting my time as I go through endless phone interviews regurgitating the same things over and over again. The interviewer on the fourth call decides to starts hitting me with detailed questions about software development skills even though I am interviewing for a systems architect job. I tell him that I have worked as a software development engineer in the past but my skill are more focused on hardware and software architect...thus my interest in the architecture job :-/

A few hours later I get a call from Harman HR explaining that they will not be moving forward with an offer after nearly 3 days of time wasted because they are looking for someone with more "software development experience". I honestly don't think Harman know the difference between a systems architect and software engineer. I can honestly say that this is one job interview that I am glad didn't end in a job offer. I wouldn't have taken it anyway...

    Interview Questions
    • The most difficult part was figuring out where to show up for the interview when Harman HR doesn't even send out time and location until 3 hours before.   Answer Question

    Software Team Manager Interview

    Application Details

I applied through a recruiter – interviewed at HARMAN.

    Interview Details

I received an unsolicited email from a company recruiter. After making email contact and learning a few details about the job, we arranged for a telephone interview. During the telephone interview we had a candid discussion about what I could do for the company and how the company could help me grow in my career. I was left with the feeling that the interview went well.

The next stage of the hiring process was to take an online skills test on standard C++. The test was very hard. It was full of questions with unusual and esoteric snippets of code that you were asked to analyze and state what the results would be. Even though I am a professional programmer with 15+ years experience using C, I totally bombed the test.

I never heard back from them.

    Interview Questions
    • The entire online skills test was very difficult. Only about 1/3 of the questions were 'sensible'. The remainder of the questions presented you with odd bits of code, classes with upside down copy constructors wrapped in sideways templates. Predicting the results of these snippets was difficult. My only thought was that this was a blunt tool if you were looking for a manager position. As a manager, if an engineer showed me any of the code from that test, I would mentor him on the importance of writing code humans can read and understand.   Answer Question

    Senior Software Engineer Interview

    Application Details

I applied online. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at HARMAN in May 2013.

    Interview Details

Interview process was way too lengthy. It began with a phone screen, an online test, and a technical phone interview. It then proceeded to an on-site interview with 4 engineers and 1 manager. Be prepared to go through multiple tests, from GRE type questions (yes! strange I know) to coding implementations. I must have passed these because the process then moved to stage two.

Stage two involved a lengthy code implementation type test through email (design, implement and compile a template-based linked list to manipulate and sort a given input file, according to certain supplied restrictions). Once I passed this, I was then scheduled to interview finally with the Division boss, who apparently makes the final hiring decisions. That interview though technical, was more ad-hoc, amorphous and very general. I thought it went well. But anything general is also subjective. Needless to say, I was not hired. The entire process lasted for more than 3 weeks.

Connected with a nice HR lady. She did not ask many questions. Instead, she gave you the information on the company and position. Sent you a screening test. Depending on different positions, this step may vary. Then, there was a technical interview. I like the process because it was very fast. You can get their response in one week.
