    Interview

Over the phone, was not too challenging as far as questions, but took some time to hear back, approx 3 weeks.I would advise candidates to look through the website and gain as much information about the particular role before applying. Also, know recent news about the company and how it may align with the firms strategies and goals.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeksinterviewed at HARMAN in January 2015.

    Interview

I applied online in the beginning of December. Near the end of January, I received an email asking if anyone had contacted me yet. I had not, and we exchanged a few emails for more information, then set up a phone interview for the end of the week. I was told that I would be hearing back by the following Tuesday regardless of whether I was selected for the next round. I did not, and after several polite reminder emails, I was told that I was not selected. That's fine. However, I was also told that two candidates who were further along in the selection process were selected to proceed to the next round. This left the impression that HR was disorganized, and the delay in contacting me was the reason I was not selected to proceed.

    Systems Architect Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at HARMAN (Farmington Hills, MI) in November 2014.

    Interview

This company really has a horrible interview process and a very unorganized HR department. Interviewed for a systems architect job in Detroit. Received a call from the company just a day after posting my resume. Went through a phone interview and I thought it went really well. The interviewer said I was being recommended for an onsite interview.

Days later I receive an automated email that says I have been "Selected" for an onsite interview, but I never receive a date, time, location, etc. At 10am one morning, I email the HR contact and she informs me that the interview is at 1pm and she forgot to send the email! I had to rush over to the interview building in my work clothes to complete the interview, which went very well.

I was then scheduled for a third phone interview with a colleague in Europe. At this point I am basically answering the same questions that were asked in the first two interviews. Very aggravating. Overall the third interview goes very well and I was expecting a call from HR to discuss an offer. HR calls me and leaves a voicemail (they can't even get my first name right and it is the most common name in the English language...grrr). They decide to schedule a fourth phone interview!

At this point I feel like I am just wasting my time as I go through endless phone interviews regurgitating the same things over and over again. The interviewer on the fourth call decides to starts hitting me with detailed questions about software development skills even though I am interviewing for a systems architect job. I tell him that I have worked as a software development engineer in the past but my skill are more focused on hardware and software architect...thus my interest in the architecture job :-/

A few hours later I get a call from Harman HR explaining that they will not be moving forward with an offer after nearly 3 days of time wasted because they are looking for someone with more "software development experience". I honestly don't think Harman know the difference between a systems architect and software engineer. I can honestly say that this is one job interview that I am glad didn't end in a job offer. I wouldn't have taken it anyway...

    Interview Questions

    • The most difficult part was figuring out where to show up for the interview when Harman HR doesn't even send out time and location until 3 hours before.   Answer Question

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter – interviewed at HARMAN.

    Interview

I received an unsolicited email from a company recruiter. After making email contact and learning a few details about the job, we arranged for a telephone interview. During the telephone interview we had a candid discussion about what I could do for the company and how the company could help me grow in my career. I was left with the feeling that the interview went well.

The next stage of the hiring process was to take an online skills test on standard C++. The test was very hard. It was full of questions with unusual and esoteric snippets of code that you were asked to analyze and state what the results would be. Even though I am a professional programmer with 15+ years experience using C, I totally bombed the test.

I never heard back from them.

    Interview Questions

    • The entire online skills test was very difficult. Only about 1/3 of the questions were 'sensible'. The remainder of the questions presented you with odd bits of code, classes with upside down copy constructors wrapped in sideways templates. Predicting the results of these snippets was difficult. My only thought was that this was a blunt tool if you were looking for a manager position. As a manager, if an engineer showed me any of the code from that test, I would mentor him on the importance of writing code humans can read and understand.   Answer Question
