Direct of SSD Product Portfolio Management Interview (Negative Experience; Average Interview)
I applied online - interviewed at HGST in February 2014.
Interview Details – Interview was spread out in 2 days. The last interview was supposed to be on Phone from a Director. She didn't called me, neither the interviewer was reachable on phone. The recruiter told me that she will get back to me, didn't. They didn't respond to my email and didn't pick up my phone either. Another week later, I used a different number to call and got the recruiter and then he told me that they have identified someone else for this position. I got this sense from day 2, but why are they to reluctant to provide me a 1 line answer? WEIRD. There is something dysfunctional somewhere.
Interview Question – All questions were based on experiences from my resume. Answer Question
Software Tools Engineer Interview (Positive Experience; Easy Interview)
I applied through a recruiter and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at HGST in January 2014.
Interview Details – The interview was 5 hours long including lunch. I spoke to about 6 people; each person was from a different department. There wasn't much technical questions and I didn't feel grilled at all.
Interview Question – How would you go about creating the software tools for the company? Answer Question
Engineer Interview (Positive Experience; Average Interview)
I applied through college or university and the process took 3 months - interviewed at HGST.
Interview Details – Applied on school job fair.
Process: phone conversation -> on-site interview (it took a day)
The interviewers are very friendly. If you are not clear about what they are asking, you can directly ask them.
Interview Question – No difficult questions. Foundation of C/C++. Talked about your projects and work experiences. Answer Question
Pricing Analyst/Volume Planner Interview (Negative Experience; Average Interview)
I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at HGST in February 2013.
Interview Details – I applied online on the HGST careers page and I was scheduled to come on-site for an interview in about a month's time.
The HR sent me a long list of forms to fill and also send me directions which were incorrect.
The HGST campus is situated in Evergreen, San Jose. Its an amazing location, just at the foothills of green mountains.
The interviews went really really. Since I came from the supplier side, I really knew what the company was upto.
Interviews went well. I felt over-qualified for both roles. Both jobs didn't need an engineering degree ad consequently the pay was very uncompetitive.
After the interviews , I received zero communication from HR. I think HR is non-existent at HGST.
Overall the work atmosphere seemed negative. After WD acquisition, many senior people were retiring and HGST is back-filling those positions with junior guys.
Interview Question – How would you balance the product mix so that the company meets its revenue numbers while sales personnel meet their quota ? Answer Question
Senior Engineer Interview (Neutral Experience)
I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at HGST.
Interview Details – Very professional interview. About 7 individual interviews with the team + a 1hr presentation. The interviewers were very friendly. The questions were mostly technical with few that were behavioral like why should we hire you?, What are your strengths/weaknesses?, etc.
The presentation is a very helpful thing. It saves the candidate some time when doing the individual interviews.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience.
Interview Question – All technical and behavioral questions were expected and easy Answer Question
Mechanical Engineer Interview (Positive Experience; Easy Interview)
I applied online and the process took 4 days - interviewed at HGST in February 2013.
Interview Details – I was called and emailed by their HR guy who said they were interested in talking with me. After filling out and returning the application, background check and NDA we set up the interview. I met with HR first, then the department manager and then 3 department engineers.
Interview Question – No typical interview questions. It was more walking them through my resume and describing past projects. Answer Question
Very Easy Interview
Legal Counsel Interview (Neutral Experience; Very Easy Interview)
I applied online - interviewed at HGST in September 2012.
Interview Details – I applied online, was contacted on phone by recruiter, then asked to come in for 1/2 day of interviews (4 interviewers). I was asked questions pertaining to why I would want to work at Hitachi. They asked few questions; time filled with them describing current management, culture, and problems they faced.
Interview Question – Asked why I would give up my current practice to work in-house? It was difficult to answer because after some of the interviewers description of the management, I honestly didn't. Answer Question
Very Easy Interview
Very Easy Interview
Administrative Assistant Interview (Positive Experience; Very Easy Interview)
I applied through a staffing agency and the process took a day - interviewed at HGST in September 2010.
Interview Details – Great! All the people were wonderful! Seems like a great place to work! Everyone is very nice and it looks like a very comfortable place to work at! Its a great location and they have great benefits! You must go through a staffing agency to become employed there and you also must be willing to travel out of state to train.
Interview Question – Do you know specific software? View Answer
Engineer Quality Assurance Interview (Negative Experience; Average Interview)
I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at HGST in July 2010.
Interview Details – very non-professional. Sent email one day asking if I can come in for personal interview the very next day, giving the feeling that this is a urgent hiring. No phone call before. I go in and meet hiring manager (who was in such a rush to complete, that I think she had made her mind before), another manager and HR. The other 2 interviewers didn't show up. No further communication from HR. At least tell me that they rejected me. Whenever I call HR, she always made excuses like 'I am in the middle of a report', 'I have to go to a meeting now'. I got the message, but it could have been conveyed better.
