Finance Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate

I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at HGST.

Interview Details – There were 2 phone interviews (first with HR and the next with the hiring manager), followed by an on site interview. The phone interview with the hiring manager was very thorough and detailed. The on site interview to the contrary was very casual. HR was very disorganized with the process and seemed to have a communication gap with the hiring team. In addition they did not offer to pay for costs associated with on site interview (commute costs). In addition, the HR person was very aggressive (for example she would call three times in a row if I didnt answer the phone before leaving a message).

Interview Question – All the questions were behavioral questions - What is your greatest failure?   Answer Question

Firmware Testing and Tools Internship/Co-op Interview

I applied online and the process took 6 weeks - interviewed at HGST.

Interview Details – The phone interview was about 15 minutes and the interviewer was very nice. The questions weren't hard at all. They were mainly about what have been my favorite classes, projects I've worked on, what programming languages I knew. There were some questions about workplace situations and how I would handle them. A couple of weeks later I was contacted and asked if I would accept an offer. I said yes and they sent me some paperwork pertaining to privacy policies, and background checks. I signed and completed the forms and was hired on as an intern.

Interview Question – There were no difficult questions really.   View Answer

Negotiation Details – They just asked when I could start. In my opinion, pay was great so I didn't try to negotiate that.

Firmware Engineer Interview

Firmware Engineer
San Jose, CA

I applied online and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at HGST in January 2011.

Interview Details – Got contacted by recruiter via linkedin. HR called first followed by Hiring Manager. They asked about my current job and my work/skills background. I worked for another storage company so the skill set needed for HGST job was exactly my work profile in my current job.

They scheduled in-person interview and flew me in their San Jose site. Interview process was good, got interviewed by members of team I was supposed to join. Got interviewed by 6 team members and HR. Hiring manager took me for lunch in their cafeteria. He was friendly. The only aspect I did not like is that I was interviews by less experienced people than me. 2 interviewers out of 6 had less than 2 yrs of experience. I suppose their team had only 6 members and they had no other option.

Everything went smooth except I did not get offered $$$ which I had in mind. I would have accepted the offer if they offered me 10K more.

Interview Question – They kept asking me why am I leaving my current company.   View Answer

Reason for Declining – Their offered salary was less than I was expecting.

Engineering Interview

I applied through other source and the process took 2 days - interviewed at HGST in February 2010.

Interview Details – I was initially contacted by the hiring manager by phone for a brief discussion about my professional aspirations and experience and how they fit with the company. The on-site interview was fairly straight-forward. I initially met with the hiring manager who showed me around, then passed me off to the recruiter who discussed the basics of the company and their benefits package. I then had a chance to speak with some of the other potential co-workers one-on-one.

Interview Question – I was asked some very technical questions that I didn't have an immediate answer to, but I believe they were designed to give me the opportunity to demonstrate my thought process and problem solving techniques.   Answer Question
