    Application Details

I applied through other source. The process took 2+ monthsinterviewed at Henry M. Jackson Foundation in August 2014.

    Interview Details

I emailed the PI from USUHS and received a follow-up email from another scientist working on the same study (funded by HJF) to set up a phone interview that week. On the phone, they asked a bit about my experience and described the position. I asked if there was any chance I would get to publish and they said that there was no chance of that and very little chance of even getting my name on a poster. The position is set up as a learning experience, but it had more of an emphasis on learning by being around the actual scientists than by doing the work yourself. I was told that aside from never writing anything, the RAs don't even help to run the data.

I sent an email to follow up a few weeks later and was invited in for an in-person interview. The in-person interview started off as a one-on-one with a research coordinator who is directly above the RAs. We mostly discussed the culture of the organization - she stressed that it was very laid back and non-competitive. The position is very flexible and people help each other out. She also mentioned that many RAs had volunteer positions outside of the center to help pad their resumes for grad school applications. After that, I met with the scientist and PI that I had spoken with on the phone. Again, the emphasis was more on the position than my qualifications, which they said they knew fairly well from the phone interview. After that, I met with a couple of current RAs to discuss what they thought of the organization. Everything they said echoed what the research coordinator had said - the scientists were pretty hands-off and the position is more about helping out with small tasks than gaining technical skills, but the flexibility is a big plus (as well as the pay).

    Interview Questions
    • I don't remember a specific question, but I know that the PI wanted to discuss the methodology of some research I had done in the past and she asked specific questions about that, as well as about other parts of my resume.   Answer Question
