Caregiver Interview

I applied in-person and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Home Instead in December 2013.

Interview Details – Very encouraging interview. Other office staff and office culture were warm and welcoming. This makes a big difference to a new arrival on the scene. It was very nice to be acknowledged and appreciated for background, abilities, personality, from the very first meeting.

Interview Question – Why would you want to do this work?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – There was not really any negotiation, per se-- the interviewer liked me and felt that I would be particularly good at this position. It was very nice to be acknowledged and appreciated for background, abilities, personality, from the very first meeting.

Non-Medical Companion/Caregiver Interview

I applied in-person and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Home Instead in December 2010.

Interview Details – I applied in the office during October and didn't hear anything. In December, I called and said I was still interested. In less than a week, they called me for an interview. The interview was talking with the owner while someone else worked at another desk. He asked the expected questions, but spent most of the time talking about himself and the company, but not giving any real information about what it would be like to work there. Even though he offered me the chance to ask my questions, he didn't answer them fully or allow me follow-up questions to what he said.

The office staff were friendly and everyone felt relaxed.

Less than a week after the interview, I received a call asking me to come to orientation in two days. There was no offer, simply, "Can you come to orientation on this day?" I arrived at orientation and the first thing was a drug test, but none of us were ready because we had expected to sit in meetings for at least an hour. Then the orientation lasted six hours and we were only paid for two because that was the length the orientation was supposed to be. The person who ran that orientation no longer works there.

While in orientation, we found out all kinds of things that we had no idea about while interviewing. A notable one is that there is to be no smoking, even if the client smokes. Another is that no matter how long the shift, you do not get a break (you can eat, but not even step outside).

A few months after orientation, we received a call saying we had to complete some training that week or be fired. Turns out the orientation coordinator forgot to give us this training. As I said, he no longer works there, but the end result was that the employees had to rearrange their lives at short notice because of it.

This lack of communication and last minute changes is typical of the daily work culture.

I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Home Instead in December 2011.

Interview Details – They first do a quick phone interview where they ask you about your previous employers, why you want to work with seniors, and information about your mode of transportation.

If they like you, they contact you for a 1:1 interview. They ask you all the basic questions about employers, strengths, weakness, etc. They also ask for you to share an experience you have had with a senior that made you want to work in that field, or just a positive experience you had.

After all that business they check your 6-10 references... and I mean all of them! They will not go forward with the process if they cant contact your references. After all that business they will run a background check, auto check, and contact your previous employer.

Then, if everything check out okay they will call you in for a 'training' session (you still don't have the job at this point) you will watch some videos and fill out a work sheet (hello middle school), they will drug test you in the office and at that point if you pass the drug test they offer you the position. Whew, quite a process and it takes forever, but its worth it if you love working with seniors.

I applied in-person and the process took a day - interviewed at Home Instead in June 2010.

Interview Details – I called on the phone to ask if they were hiring, they said yes. I was told to come in and fill out an application. I checked back a few times to see if my application was reviewed, and was told that the person who interviews was on vacation. A few weeks later they called me for an interview. The following week I believe I had orientation. We had just began orientation when I was asked to go to another city and care for a alzhiemer client. My orientation was not completed or spoke about again. I miss a 3 hour shift in one year and was at the company's beck and call. I learned over time the owners and managment were decietful. They gave hours I earned through total alligence to new hires so they can have hours. They managed to find some bogus lie so they didn't have to pay me my PTO. They offer nothing for senority or a good empolyee. My immediate supervisor out right lied to me. The management goes into the computer and changes facts and there is NOTHING the employee can do to refute it. They munipneulate the Hand Book. The are horrible people to work for! HomeInstead the franchise they are under should be ashamed to have any connection with South Sound Senior Care LLC. They feel you should just take what ever they hand you and if you don't like it, tough! Move on!

I applied in-person and the process took a day - interviewed at Home Instead in January 2011.

Interview Details – Interviewed by staffer in one day interview. The were friendly and honest. The whole process was to make sure if you had the personality to care for seniors and if you had experience in the field. Once you get the job you have to go through a non paid 3 day training where you see some vids and go through a book and then take about five tests.
You dont really get to see people at the office a lot you just talk to them on the phone abou clients needs and stuff.

Caregiver Interview

I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at Home Instead in April 2009.

Interview Details – I responded to a Craigslist ad for Home Instead Senior Care caregivers. Craigslist is full of caregiving jobs, at least around where I live. A couple days later one of the staff at the company emailed back with a time to interview. Six references were requested.

The interview was in the conference room in their office. There was a video presentation of the values of the company and what the job as a caregiver entails. The interview was 1:1 with a staff member who became my supervisor. She asked about job history, work ethic, responsibility. I was given an option on whether or not I was willing to work with incontinent clients.

There were opportunities for salary advancement in 50¢ increments based on use of in-house education material.

Interview Question – Why do you want to be a caregiver?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – There wasn't really an opening for negotiation. It's a basic, entry level caregiving position.

The process took a day - interviewed at Home Instead in December 2010.

Interview Details – I put in an application for Home Instead Senior Care in Evansville,IN online at snagajob.com. I was called the next day and asked a few questions about myself and the job I was applying for. During this call, an interview was set up for the next day. I went to the interview, where we talked about my availability, my experience, and my future both personally and with the company. The day after the interview, I was called and told I was hired and the orientation was the following Monday. I attended the orientation on Monday, and accepted the job I was offered.

Interview Questions

  • Why do you feel that you would be the one for the job?   View Answer
  • Why do you think Home Instead Senior Care is a good business? And why do you think you would like working here?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – I was able to negotiate my availability because I am not available on nights or weekends. If you are available in any way to work nights or weekends, I would do so because a weekend incentive is given and it is well worth it. But, if u cant, they will find you clients and make it worth while. This is a very rewarding job, regardless of the pay/ hours you receive.
