Applications Development Specialist Interview

Applications Development Specialist
Baton Rouge, LA

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 4 months - interviewed at IBM in October 2013.

Interview Details – I first spoke to the recruiters at a job fair and everyone was very helpful. I had to submit my resume online which I did a couple of weeks later. After about two months I was invited by email to interview in Baton Rouge. The interview actually had two parts, a technical interview and then a behavioral interview. The technical interview was about java and object-oriented programming in general. The technical interview was really basic. I had only taken one c++ course and was able to use c++ in the interview. The behavioral interview was just about how I work in teams, what would I do in some situations, and examples of good and bad situations in my life, etc.

Interview Questions

Negotiation Details – I thought the offer was way too low and I called the recruiter to ask for more money. She was noticeably ticked off, but said she would talk to "leadership". She contacted me a few days later saying that because of my lack of training in java and the world-class java training I would be getting, they wouldn't give me anything more. This is very ironic because they immediately changed me to a different service line that has nothing to do with java. I applied for a java programming job and was switched to a nontechnical position without any explanation.

I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at IBM in May 2013.

Interview Details – After submitting my resume, I spoke with an IBM recruiter multiple times. I was given ample time to prepare for the interview, and the recruiter gave me suggestions and a ton of help. The recruiter also called many times to check up and keep me updated. Two half an hour one-on-one interviews. 4 other prospective employees were interviewing with different people at the same time, part of many during the day.

Interview Question – All expected. Questions about programming topics, education and job experience, and behavioral questions. Polymorphism, inheritance, encapsulation, and other topics were covered, and simple programming tasks we're given (loops, sorts, ...) in your best language.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiation.

I applied through college or university and the process took 6 months - interviewed at IBM in May 2009.

Interview Details – It was for an internship position and I only had one phone interview. It was relatively low on technical questions since they were looking for someone soon. They did go through some of my previous work and since I had a decent portfolio for an intern the offer was easy to get.

Interview Question – I wasn't expecting questions about management and team work since it was a technical job. Questions like how did you work with the team when deadlines were not met or working with someone who was not a good collaborator, etc.   View Answers (2)

Applications Developer - Business Intelligence Interview

Applications Developer - Business Intelligence

I applied through a recruiter and the process took a day - interviewed at IBM in August 2010.

Interview Details – There was one interview over the phone with the hiring managers. I was considered for two positions - application development and ETL/DBA. I was hired by the application development manager because the other manager was unavailable for the call. Because of the customer orientation of the position, I believe the interviewer was more interested in my communication skills than my technical skills (which turned out to be a correct method of evaluation - the position is half third-tier help desk and half development with heavy emphasis on client interaction). They made their decision very quickly which was a great relief.

Interview Question – What reporting tools have you used? Actuate, Brio, Crystal Reports? How much experience have you had in scheduling jobs on Unix? Can you write XML and implement it?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – Because of the speed of their decision, there was no time to negotiate.
