    Applications Development Specialist Interview

I interviewed through a recruiter. The process took 4 months - interviewed at IBM in October 2013.

    Interview Details

I first spoke to the recruiters at a job fair and everyone was very helpful. I had to submit my resume online which I did a couple of weeks later. After about two months I was invited by email to interview in Baton Rouge. The interview actually had two parts, a technical interview and then a behavioral interview. The technical interview was about java and object-oriented programming in general. The technical interview was really basic. I had only taken one c++ course and was able to use c++ in the interview. The behavioral interview was just about how I work in teams, what would I do in some situations, and examples of good and bad situations in my life, etc.

    Interview Questions
    • Name the eight data types in Java.   Answer Question
    • Tell me about a time when you worked on a project in a group and it went well/didn't go well.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
I thought the offer was way too low and I called the recruiter to ask for more money. She was noticeably ticked off, but said she would talk to "leadership". She contacted me a few days later saying that because of my lack of training in java and the world-class java training I would be getting, they wouldn't give me anything more. This is very ironic because they immediately changed me to a different service line that has nothing to do with java. I applied for a java programming job and was switched to a nontechnical position without any explanation.

They moved quickly. Asked very detailed questions specific to the job position. Not necessarily looking for a good candidate but more focused on the closet match in terms of experience

I interviewed through college or university. The process took 6 months - interviewed at IBM in May 2009.

    Interview Details

It was for an internship position and I only had one phone interview. It was relatively low on technical questions since they were looking for someone soon. They did go through some of my previous work and since I had a decent portfolio for an intern the offer was easy to get.

    Interview Questions
    • I wasn't expecting questions about management and team work since it was a technical job. Questions like how did you work with the team when deadlines were not met or working with someone who was not a good collaborator, etc.   View Answers (2)

Applications Developer - Business Intelligence Interview

I interviewed through a recruiter. The process took a day - interviewed at IBM in August 2010.

    Interview Details

There was one interview over the phone with the hiring managers. I was considered for two positions - application development and ETL/DBA. I was hired by the application development manager because the other manager was unavailable for the call. Because of the customer orientation of the position, I believe the interviewer was more interested in my communication skills than my technical skills (which turned out to be a correct method of evaluation - the position is half third-tier help desk and half development with heavy emphasis on client interaction). They made their decision very quickly which was a great relief.
