    Investment Banking Summer Analyst Interview

    Interview

First rounds were conducted on campus, contacted the same evening to attend a Superday at the office. Relatively straightforward questions on valuation and basic qualitative questions (tell me about yourself, why banking, why Lazard, tell me about some of the recent deals this office has done, etc.). Superday was 3 hours long.

    Interview Questions

    • Explain to me why one company may have a higher multiple (any multiple of choice) than another   Answer Question

    Declined Offer

    Interview

The first round interview was about 30 minutes long and consisted of questions about my resume and background. Then in the rest of the interview, the interviewer described the type of work that the job entailed and what type of person would be a good fit. There were no behavioral or technical questions in this first round.

    Investment Banking Analyst Interview

Anonymous Employee in New York, NY

    Neutral Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took a weekinterviewed at Lazard (New York, NY) in October 2011.

    Interview

Normal on-campus recruiting process. First round was a two-on-one interview with Associates. Mainly technical questions, fairly intense. One interviewer would ask a question and the other would interrupt my response with another technical question. They were nice enough guys though, as after I answered a bunch of technicals correctly the tone of the interview shifted and became much more lighthearted. Nothing unexpected though. Invitation to superday a few days later. Superday consisted of 4 one-on-one interviews with VPs and Associates. Fewer technical questions, more fit questions as well as some brainteaser/probability questions.

    Interview Questions

    • standard valuation, accounting questions. ex: can you have negative enterprise value, etc?   Answer Question
    • why lazard?   1 Answer

    Reasons for Declining

Have heard bad things about culture and bonuses. Had another offer at a similar firm.

    Intern Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Lazard.

    Interview

Was referred by an employee. Took a week to get invited for an interview. Had two interviews: 1 VP and 1 Associate. Took two weeks to hear the decision. As I did not have background in investment banking at the time, both interviewers were rather relaxed on the technical questions, whereas brain teasers and personality questions were more difficult. One of the toughest questions I received was "What is your ultimate goal in life". I knew investment baking required full-time commitment to the company for a long time (hence, no personal life and so forth), but I replied honestly that I want to have a big family with 3 kids at least and working as a banker would help me realize this dream.

    Interview

Chatted with analyst and VP, expected questions. 3 rounds of 30 minute interviews, everyone was very friendly and professional, I think it went quite well. They told me that since I was a freshman, most of the training would happen on site if I got the internship.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Lazard.

    Interview

At least 2 initial interviews with recruitment consultant. About 4 interviews with progressively senior team members at the company. The first interview was quite long, perhaps 2 hours. The last with 2 senior managing partners, was about 5 minutes.

    Interview Questions

    • I was given some quite specific "game theory" type questions, along the lines of the Prisoners' Dilemma, not so much to give a "correct" answer, but more for them to see how I thought through a logical, ethical, business problem   Answer Question

    Negotiation

I was offered a pretty attractive package. I did not negotiate on the salary, but I did on some of the benefits. I got everything I asked for.

    Interview

One interview round with about 4 bankers - 2 analysts, 1 associate, 1 vp. Interview process went by pretty standard - walk me through your resume, questions about high school, university, previous internships, extra curricular activities, why I want to do investment banking, why I choose to apply for Lazard and what I want to gain through that internship. Technical questions are fairly easy and so are the brain teasers
