The interview process is very laid back. There is a phone screen, and then a group interview. During the group interview a technical presentation is given.

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at MITRE in June 2010.

    Interview Details

I applied online through the company website. Several weeks later, I received an email asking me to do a phone interview. I did one, and they asked me about my background, my comfort with various programming languages, etc. About a week and a half later, they asked me to come in for an on-site interview. They flew me across the country and put me up in the Ritz Carlton. The on-site interview felt like a formality -- they didn't ask me any technical questions, and spent more time telling me about what they do. I got the offer a few days later.

I applied online. The process took a day - interviewed at MITRE in July 2010.

    Interview Details

I found out about MITRE while researching FFRDCs and the work they do. I applied for a job that matched my experience with simulation design. I was first contacted by phone where I was asked specific questions about my background in software design and simulation. Within a few days, I received a call asking me to come in for an in person interview. Travel and lodging for the interview were taken care of by MITRE. The day of the on site interview, I met with several different groups ranging from individual managers to teams that I would be working with.

Questions were mostly about my experience and how it would relate to the job I was applying for. It is worth noting that there are a large number of different groups at MITRE, and it is not uncommon for two or more groups to interview the same candidate for multiple positions the same day. The interview was handled very well and those I spoke with were very professional. Each person both asked about my background and experience and also allowed me to ask about the company and work I would be doing.

MITRE's offer process does not leave a lot of room for negotiation. If you are made an offer, you are given 1 week to consider. They keep information that dictate what the nationwide average for your position, experience, and education are and make offers according to that information. They do not low-ball offers. It will be at or above market value and they expect an answer fairly quickly. They did provide relocation assistance, but that is only available for some positions.

I applied through college or university. The process took a day - interviewed at MITRE in April 2008.

First off you start with a presentation in front of the people in the group you will be working with. This is a half hour presentation that is suppose to be about you, but in retrospect I think its suppose to be more about what you have done career wise.
Then its 1:1 interviews, a few of these, including one over lunch. The last interview of the day is with the hiring manager.
The questions were basic, I was rusty on them. I am not sure how in depth they were going to go.

Very simple process, each of the workers in the area would talk in a one on one interview and describe what they need from the new employee and you would meet with the hiring manager and he would outline what exactly ( usually the job description) they are looking for in an employee. Quick and easy process, technical questions about your job then you usually get to know within a few weeks if you received the job or not.
