I applied online. The process took 5 days - interviewed at Macy's in July 2013.

    Interview Details

I had just recently discovered the website snagajob.com and began looking for job openings there. I found a job opening for a part-time sale associate at Macy's in downtown Boston. I had no retail experience but I was hoping to gain some. I decided to fill out and submit an application for the position at Macy's on Sunday, July 7th. The next day, July 8th, I received an email saying that "we are interested in meeting with you to further discuss employment opportunities. We would like to invite you to schedule yourself for an interview". There was a link in the email that took me directly to the Scheduling Center, where I was able to review available times, schedule my interview, and read important interview details and instructions. I like to do things sooner than later and I had been looking for a part-time job for a little over a month and wanted a new job really bad so I scheduled my first interview for Wednesday, July 10th. I wanted to have some time to prepare but I also wanted to speed up the chance of me possibly getting employed, this day allowed me to have the rest of Monday and all of Tuesday to prepare for my interview. I went to my first on Wednesday, July 10th, and I did wonderful because I was told to come in the next day (today, July 11th) for a second interview with the manager. The person who originally interview me during my first interview wanted to get me an interview with the manager of the department I was going to work in right then and there but the manager couldn't be found so I was told to come back the next day. I went in for my second interview today and met with the manager of the department in which I was looking to work in and within 10 mins or so I was offered the sales associate position. The manager was so kind and she stressed team work the most and the fact that I would have multiple responsibilities in the department. I think the fact that I enjoy helping people, my prior intern/work experience in a major hospital (costant changing environment), and my availability is what made her offer me the position. After being offered the position and accepting it, I was taken to the front desk where a woman gave me some paper work to fill out (to put me into the system), signed me up for orientation, and gave me some information in a packet, all in which she explained of course. I am beyond happy about my new job position and I am looking forward to starting work at Macy's. I have orientation next week and I think I will begin working shortly after that :)

    Negotiation Details
I wasn't looking to negotiate and didn't ask about it because I really wanted the job. I'm also a full-time college student so having extra money in my pocket is nice and a plus so I can't complain about the pay. The minimum amount I would ever get paid is $8.00 because that is Massachusetts minimum wage so i'm fine with that (it's good to know your state's minimum wage just in case any company you apply for tries to take advantage of you). Although there was no negotiation, I was told by the person who hired me (my now manager) that all sale associates start off at a set salary rate per hour ($8.00-$8.50) and work their way up.

I applied online. The process took 1 week - interviewed at Macy's in August 2012.

    Interview Details

Applied online, sent email to arrange an interview at my own convenience which was very handy. 1:1 interview with an HR rep. Read questions from a script and took notes for my answers. Said there were no positions available in any of the departments but put me in the "Yes" category for future hiring. But why advertise positions if there were no positions at the time ?

The interview was pretty standard. The executive I interviewed with was also the men's executive manager and was conducting interviews to expand his team. After going over my resume he asked me questions about "Magic" selling (a term used all throughout Macy's). The questions were about customer service and how I handled certain situations. Luckily, they were all pretty standard. "Tell me about an experience where you went above and beyond to help a customer." After roughly ten to fifteen minutes, the manager excused himself and stepped out of the office. I figured he'd just come back and tell me he'd call me if anything. Instead, he came back with a form he started filling out and was about to give me my employee number, when he stopped and said, "Oh I'm sorry, you still want the job right?, Congratulations, you're hired."

The standard pay for any Macy's sales associate is base pay plus commission. Unfortunately, they use base pay as a fancy to way to say minimum wage. I was surprised by that and tried negotiating, but the manager insisted this was the standard base pay for all part-timers. He then talked up how his employees all make around $12 an hour on average. "Some even make $15 an hour." Commission rates all vary by department. The men's department is 4.25% for part-time and 5.25% for full-time. BUT, an employee ONLY earns commission on the amount they exceeded their weekly sales department goals. If the weekly goal was $1000 and you pulled in $1500, you're only getting 4.25% of the $500 you exceeded (which is only $21.25). So, when the weekly goal is very high..the chances to earn commission are drastically reduced, unless of course you sell like your life depended upon it.

Filled out online application - many steps and a lot of repetitive questions. Received notification by email to set-up in store interview. Had a total of 2 interviews, which were very positive. When it came to salary I was offered an hourly rate, I accepted it. I was told they wanted to start the pre-employment paper work but had to get the approval for the hourly rate from HR. I waited to hear back, made various calls, emails etc and NEVER got any response back from either of the sales managers I had the interviews with.

All I did was go to the human resource office and asked if they were hiring. Due to my personality and my educational background (degree in fashion merchandising management), the lady hired me on the spot and scheduled me to come next week for the training. This was the first job that gave me a chanc to gain experience in retail and fashion. I was very happy and have been there for 4 years. It's all based on how you present yourself and attributes you can offer to the company. experience isn't always necessary, since they always train you. If via phone, expect about a week or in order to get a retutrn call back.

    Interview Details

Filled an application for Macy's online. I received a called about 5 days later and set up an interview to take place 3 days later. I met with the person who was conducting the interview and she seem to be nice. She first asked me to give some background on myself and what bring me to Macy's. She the asked some questions that took the whole interview process about less that 30 mins. During the interview I noticed that her eyes were wondering around the office. At the end she asked if I have any questions, I asked " what qualities would make a good candidate here?", she basically talks about sales. After she said that I was thinking to myself I gave a good personality on leadership and accountability. When I left the interview I kind of knew I wasn't going to be picked for the job. I received a rejection letter the same day of the interview..The first tome I have not felt good about an interview! The questions were kind of complex to me personally. What do yall think??

the interview was pretty fast, intuitive, and well descriptive. They notify you via email when to come in and it usually takes about 20 minutes to complete, and they let you know there on the spot if you are been hired. The manager is usually friendly, and they ask why you would like to work at macy's, and what you believe you can add to the sales growth.
