Accounting Tech Interview

Accounting Tech

I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Marriott in January 2013.

Interview Details – The process was good. I applied to a posting online and heard back quickly after applying, maybe within a week or so. Started with a quick phone interview and then went in a few days later for a long interview the the manager and another employee. Was kept well informed throughout the process. Overall very good experience.

Interview Question – Must questions related to experience / ability to handle the tasks of the job. Things like how do you deal with people that are upset, on the phone and in person.   Answer Question

Staff Accountant Interview

Staff Accountant
Irvine, CA

I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Marriott.

Interview Details – - Online application was very thorough:
 General questions
Personality testing (do you strongly agree, agree, etc..)
Customer service questions (What would you do if...),
- Preliminary interview was with the Assistant controller.
- Followup interview was with Director of Finance and Accounting
- Questions are based on the STAR model (situation/task, action, result)
- I was also asked about knowledge and experience with various systems/software
- During interview with DFA I was asked to write down my desired compensation
- I was later offered one dollar/hour less than I had asked for.
- After accepting the offer, I was sent to Human Resources to complete a drug test and basic background check.

Interview Question – Tell me about a time that you could have done more for your boss/teacher/customer.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – For non-management associates, hourly wages are set to a scale that factors experience and cost of living for your area -- raises and pay are no longer merit based.
I am sure it is still possible to negotiate your pay rate, however it may be difficult considering they now use this standardized wage scale.

Assistant Director of Finance and Accounting Interview

Assistant Director of Finance and Accounting
Boston, MA

I applied through college or university and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Marriott in November 2012.

Interview Details – On campus two person interview, one asking questions, the other writing answers/notes. Second round is an "on-site" interview at a Marriott hotel. Single interview with two people, however this time they both ask questions. After the interview there was a benefits overview and free lunch (from the hotel which was excellent).

Interview Question – Questions mainly pertained to self-motivation; working under pressure; team environments; being a leader, etc. Very typical entry-level finance questions. There were some minor technical questions on understanding basic accounting finance concepts, but nothing you shouldn't know.   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – Too much variability in where you could be located after completing the 3 month training program.

I applied online and the process took 5 days - interviewed at Marriott in June 2012.

Interview Details – Had 3 interviews and never heard back. I would have expected more from Marriott than to simply never call again. I think it would have been appropriate to at least let the candidate know, that they are not in the running anymore. Hopefully the rest of the organization has better manners.

Assistant Director of Finance and Accounting Interview

Assistant Director of Finance and Accounting
San Diego, CA

I applied through college or university and the process took 5 weeks - interviewed at Marriott in May 2010.

Interview Details – Interviewed on campus with a director and assistant director of finance from a local hotel. Mostly behavioral questions and scripted from a list. I asked them about their background and why those chose private over public accounting and agreed with their reasoning. Took about an hour. A week later, I got an email from HR saying I passed the first interview and had to take an hour long personality/management test. A week later I got an email from HR saying they were flying me to Denver, CO for final rounds interviews with the Area Director of Finance. We were placed in the City Centre hotel for 2 nights with all expenses paid (flight, room, meals) and the next morning we had an hour presentation on HR, culture and administrative responsibilities. Then all of us took turns with a panel interview with the Area Director and the Director of Finance of that particular hotel. Questions were behavioral, but way more intense. They grilled you for more details and it was scarier than the campus interview. Lasted about an hour and then I was flown back to CA, to receive and offer email a week later. What a pleasant surprise!

Interview Questions

Negotiation Details – Tried to negotiate the salary, but there is no pay difference for bachelors or masters degree. Pay also depends on region/location. HR threatened me saying it's supply and demand due to the recession and that if I try to negotiate, they have other candidates on the waitlist eager to take my position.

Accounting and Finance Interview

Accounting and Finance
New York, NY

I applied through college or university and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Marriott in January 2011.

Interview Details – First round on campus with two interviewers. Fairly straightforward behavioral questions: Why Marriott? Why this position?

Invited to final rounds in Baltimore with a reception and presentation the previous afternoon and evening. Lots of opportunities to network and ask questions. Interview was again very typical behavioral questions, felt just like a repeat of the previous round of interview.
