Summer Associate (Management Consultant) Interview

Summer Associate (Management Consultant)

I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at McKinsey & Company in November 2013.

Interview Details – This was for the sophomore program. They send you a lot of material to help you prepare and put you into contact with a person working at McKinsey to help you with any questions. Then you have two behavioral interviews and case studies, followed by a test. If you pass that round, you are offered an interview at one of your chosen offices.

Interview Question – "Tell me about yourself." Have like an elevator pitch or a short narrative that tells your story.   Answer Question

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 2 days - interviewed at McKinsey & Company in January 2014.

Interview Details – I spent several weeks networking with many people at McKinsey, getting to know the culture, the work-life balance, project placement, etc before I even submitted my application. After I received the interview invitation, I spent several additional weeks running cases with some of the people I had previously met, which helped me feel much more comfortable about the interview process. During the first round of interviews, they had me meet with 2 different people. One was a former associate and one was a current engagement manager. Each interview consisted of an indepth discussion about 1 job related experience I have had. They then went into a case, which had me develop strategies for the companies presented.

Interview Question – The case used the iPad and made the exhibits interactive. It was very interesting, but it threw me for a loop, because of the way that the information was laid out.   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at McKinsey & Company in January 2013.

Interview Details – In first place you have to take a problem solving test, in order to prepare for it they offer you in their website 3 test samples, those test samples are similar in style to the real one; my advice is only to do those or not even that much, when i went to the interview a lot of people who practiced a lot where more nervous than those who did not practice as much, expect every question to be different!
After the problem solving test you have to do two interviews, one personal and one case study. In the first one you have to be yourself and be ready to every type of questions and in the case be ready to unexpected turns.
Finally you have the final interview with a partner with same style to the previous questions.

Interview Question – in the case study when you have a really good answer, and they ask you for other possible answers, i find it difficult to quickly create another answer.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at McKinsey & Company in March 2010.

Interview Details – Interview process was held at business school. The company came on campus, hosted interviews, and provided plenty of information about the program, process, case studies, etc.

Interview Question – I was asked to help a hotel figure out whether or not it should continue to stock mini-bars in their hotels - did it make sense? We walked through a case study and talked about the cost of restocking, the margins on the candy bars, etc, the cost of electricity and maintenance of the fridges.   View Answer

I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at McKinsey & Company in September 2013.

Interview Details – Standard APD process, applied to Insight made finalist (ie had phone interveiw) but did not make the final cut (they told me they had 60 equally qualified and started choosing based on Ivy status). Had PST which was admittedly more vague than the practice tests are online. Usually I could narrow down to 1 or 2 responses but the real PST has many questions which I had to guess among 3 or more responses. Group interviews were standard with feedback mostly consisting of "go deeper in thought connections" and "be client/case specific." 2nd round interview was held in Phili. Nice office, a little less structured than prevouisly in regards to general directions given once inside the office. Mostly, hung around with other candidates for 15 minutes before interviews started. 1st inteview went fine, had a fellow APD interview me and he suggested to be calm in second interview. 2nd interview was a lot harder and the MBA didn't seem to like my flow of thought. Had me change my structure 1, 2, 3 to go in 3, 2, 1 order and kept giving me responses like "I do have information on that but lets save it for later." In the end no offer.

I applied through college or university and the process took 1+ week - interviewed at McKinsey & Company in October 2013.

Interview Details – McKinsey & Co recruited from my college. After being accepted for an interview, I was offered a number of interview prep opportunities - a conference call phone session with other applicants reviewing the process and a case, an in person group case work through with a representative, and a 30 min online Q&A session. We also had to take a written business skills test that is McKinsey-specific the night before the exam for an hour (it seemed easier than the online samples). The first round interview itself was two 45-min separate interviews with a fit scenario (about overcoming challenges, working with difficult people) and a case each. One of my interviewers prodded at my example, asking things like "what did you say?" to get more detail; the other gave much less reaction.

Interview Question – One of the cases involved a graph that was given to me half-way through and was a bit complex - it also required that we refer back to numbers given at the very beginning of the case to calculate the correct outcomes. Be aware!   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 2 months - interviewed at McKinsey & Company in October 2013.

Interview Details – APD hiring process: 3 rounds of interviews. Made it to the final round and was not extended an offer. Overall, I had very pleasant experiences with HR, Consultants, EMs ... unfortunately, I found the Partners and Directors I met to be fairly rude.

Interview Question – I don't think any of the questions were all that difficult. I could have done a better job with my summary and recommendation.   Answer Question
