Cashier/Stocking/Customer Service Interview

Cashier/Stocking/Customer Service
Cupertino, CA

I applied online and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Michaels Stores in June 2014.

Interview Details – I originally applied back in January 2013 and heard nothing back from the 4 different stores I applied to. Micheals makes you wait 30 days between each application so it slipped to the back of my mind until around May. I applied to the same 3 stores and within 4 days got a call back from 1 asking me to come in for an interview in a weeks time.

There is nothing you really need to do to prepare except a quick browse on this site to make sure you have answers to questions. Dress business casual, I wore dark blue jeans and a collared sweater.

ARRIVE EARLY!! They were ready for me at 9:50 when I showed up, so be in the store 10-15 minutes prior. They interviewed me in the craft classroom/

Interview is very easy, almost like having a basic conversation. You will be interviewed by the store manager, the assistant manager, and the team leader of what you are applying for (i.e Framing team leader, customer assistant team leader).

They start out by asking about yourself and if you've had any experience in retail and crafting before. Then basic questions like "name a time when you needed to work as a group to solve a problem" and "name a time you didn't agree with someone on a task and what you did about it". They then asked hypothetical questions like "what would you do if you saw a long line to the register" and "what would you do if you saw someone shoplifting". Be prepared to sit for about 40 minutes, so go to the bathroom and everything before hand.

After the interview, they explained to me the process of being hired and what I should expect like wages, hours, etc. Then they said they would preform a background check and call me. 2 days later I was called to the store and given a name tag and hired.

Interview Question – "What do you expect from us as an employer". Try not to sound demanding, but also expect something.   View Answer

Negotiation Details – No negotiation, a set wage depending on your department. Minimum wage which in California is $9.00.

I applied in-person and the process took 3 days - interviewed at Michaels Stores in April 2013.

Interview Details – I was called for an interview by the store manager, however she was not there when I arrived, so I met with the Assistant Manager. He was very nice, but seemed somewhat unfamiliar with the interview process. We spoke for approximately 15 minutes, and he said that the manager would contact me.

Interview Question – His questions seemed rather vague and general. Nothing stands out.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – There was nothing to negotiate. It was definitely a "take-it-or-leave-it" situation.

I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Michaels Stores in June 2012.

Interview Details – I applied online through Snagajob.com. I was called maybe two to three weeks later by the manager who wanted me to come in on that day. I was incredibly nervous, but when I got there, they had me sit in one of the crafting classrooms and wait for the manager to come speak to me. He was fifteen minutes late, and when he arrived, he basically just told me about the company for twenty minutes and asked me if I had any hobbies. And that was it. No more questions. He sent my background check in, and told me to come in on Friday.

Interview Question – Do you have any hobbies that may interfere with the job?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – I

The process took a day - interviewed at Michaels Stores in October 2011.

Interview Details – I applied online. I got a call about a week later and missed it by an hour, called back and he had already left, I was instructed to call back on thursday, I did and he immediately asked me when I wanted my interview giving me a few days in the future. I went the next day at 4. I walked in and asked for the person who called me. He took me into the crafts room, looked over my application and asked me if certain things were true, And then said I was hired. The entire interview lasted maybe 5 minutes and it was very simple. I'm 17 and don't have any work experience either.

Interview Details – I was greeted at the front checking stand by an elderly woman who called the manager over. The manager and I went into a crafting room for the interview. It was extremely quick - only 3-5 questions long. It was mostly her telling me about the company, the different jobs I was interested in, and the hours/work conditions. She then told me that they'd run a background check the next day and bring me in for paperwork later on in the week.
