Application Details

I applied online. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Michaels Stores in October 2012.

Interview Details

I met with the manager at the front of the store then we went into the back class room for the interview. They went over the application then asked the standard questions, what made you choose this job? Here's a scenario how would you react? things like that. Then the pulled out a booklet and asked a few more questions and they rate how they liked your answer.
P.S. smiling a lot really helps if you want this job, I was an hour late to my interview and because I was really polite and smiled I got the job. Having a awesome smile helps.
When that was over, i think it was 2 weeks later or a week late I got called in for orientation.

Interview Questions
  • This wasn't difficult but at the time I thought it was.

You are helping a customer and another customer tells you she has been waiting for help for 10 minutes and you can tell she is getting impatient. As you are walking over to show the customer the item the other one is being rude and trying to get you to help them first. How do you react?

Basically we just sat in an open room and I was interviewed in front of 5 other people. You should wear something nice-casual to the interview. Khakis and a tucked in shirt with dark sneakers are ok for men; women can wear the same or a nice blouse untucked with khakis and attractive shoes (not heels), skirts are ok too. Keep it tasteful and for God's sake, don't show up knowing nothing about the company or not having questions! The interview is a 2-way process and you need to ask questions even if you know the answer or don't care. Sit up straight - managers like to see that you are paying attention to them when they're talking. Do not chew gum, bring candy, food or drinks. Don't bring your phone into the interview with you - leave it locked up in your car if you have to. Always bring at least 2 hard copies of your resume and list of references. If you're really nervous and I mean really, I would advise taking something to calm you down because managers like to see you act confident. Please don't drink alcohol before the interview or stay up all night beforehand partying...trust me, they can smell it on you no matter how hard you showered. Tattoos and piercings are acceptable in some stores but for the interview, try to look at least a little like you have your life together. If the manager asks if you've applied anywhere else, just say no. Don't entertain his thought that you don't care by adding on to the end of the conversation, "Yeah, like 5 other places. And they pay better than here too." Michaels is one of the few companies that doesn't drug test. Just throwing that out there.

If you're desperate for work, try not to pay attention to the pay at first because it stinks and it'll get better. If you're just looking for something to fill your time, remember you have other options and this isn't the last craft store on the planet.

    Interview Details

Completed an online application which consisted of a ridiculous timed assessment and personality test. Received a call to confirm interview appointment five days later. I thought it would be the usual face-to-face, but it was a group interview consisting of six other candidates. Definitely was not expecting it. Manager wasn't there so another employee and assistant manager hosted the interview. Basic interview with common retail questions. Because I didn't have any previous work experience, I was not qualify for the position.

    Interview Questions
    • 1. Tell me about yourself.
      2. Why should we hire you?
      3. Describe a time where you were faced with a difficult situation.
      4. During a busy day, you notice that another employee stole $100 from the cash register, how would you handle it?

Applied online and was contacted by phone to schedule a face to face interview. Met in the classroom with the manager and had a very laid back interview during which I was very comfortable speaking about both my job experiences and my artistic experiences. Management looks for reasonably confident individuals. Be thorough about your past experiences, especially details of leadership positions and dealing with difficult customers. Exceptional communication skills and previous experience with successfully collecting emails is a huge plus.

I applied online. The process took 1+ weekinterviewed at Michaels Stores.

    Interview Details

Applied online via their company website, had to renew information after applying a few years prior. Received a phone call about a month after for an interview later that week. Arrived promptly and had to wait a few minutes for manager to become available. Was asked questions such as why do you want to work with Michaels? What kind of crafts do you like to do? Do you have any special skills? Is there anything you think you're the best at? If you had a problem with an employee what would you do? What kinds of crafts do you have knowledge in? How much, etc... Then I was told I would be called within a week. Received the phone call about 3 days later offering me the job. Then got on the job training the day after. People seemed friendly and helpful.

I applied online. The process took 1+ weekinterviewed at Michaels Stores in September 2014.

    Interview Details

The application process was pretty simple. I saw their ad on SnagAJob and decided to apply on their official website. Ended up getting called 2 days later and accepted their invite to an interview a couple of days later. On the day of the interview, I was surprised to realize that it was going to be a group interview! For being my first group interview, it wasn't actually too bad. The store manager told us to write our names on construction paper and decorate it with foam stickers to make a name card. After that, we were told to give a brief description about ourselves, what position we were applying for, and why we wanted to work at Michaels. A week later, I got a call from the store manager and he offered me a job.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeksinterviewed at Michaels Stores in September 2014.

    Interview Details

I applied a total of three times in the past year and didn't get a call back till my last try. I applied at the beginning of September and got called back in the beginning of October. I think the fact that they're hiring seasonal workers around this time helped me get an interview. They called on a Friday and told me the interview was the following Monday. They don't tell you that the interview is a group interview but thats what it'll be most likely, especially when they are trying to a hire a lot of new workers. The whole interview was really informal, it seemed more like the manager was just trying to get to know us and told us what our job would entail. I really loved it because they emphasized that the job was temporary, so we weren't expected to have high hopes, but they ensured that they do offer a high number of seasonal employees work after the period has ended (The first week of January). They said they would call back in three days, since they were only doing interviews that day. When the third day came around I didn't get a call, but decided I'd wait till the next day, Friday, to ask about the job, but they called Friday and hired me the job. I attended orientation the following week. The actual application process is tedious and long but once you get an interview it goes by really fast.

    Interview Questions
    • We were only asked to tell them about ourselves (this consisted of basics like name, what college you were attending, what your goals were) and also if you had any questions for them, which is always recommended you do.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
No negotiation. They tell you during the interview the conditions of the hiring and it's minimum wage, which here in CA is $9/hr.

Filled an online application which was fairly easy - a lot of personality questions (strongly agree, disagree, etc.). I got a call within the next week if I'm still interested in the position (which I did) and if I would like to schedule an interview two days after. Interview was very nice, manager was friendly, very interested in me (I'm from Europe, moved to the US couple of months ago). Standard questions.

They have this little sheet that they ask questions off of most of it was typical but the person interviewing me was extremely nosy and liked putting people on the spot.

I came on time for my interview but the person they had lined up before me was late (wandering around the store for 40 minutes and didn't tell anybody he was there to be interviewed) so I had to go wait around for 20 minutes so he could have his interview first which really made me feel like not even coming back for my interview.

    Interview Questions
    • Her:"Oh why can't you work Sundays?"
      Me: "I go to church"
Her: "Oh! what religion are you?" (YOU DON'T ASK PEOPLE THAT)
      Me: ".....I'm a Jehovah's Witness"
Her: "I have a friend who's a Jehovah!" (If she legitimately had a friend who was in my religion she would know that is an ignorant thing to say)
      Me: "Oh.. cool"

Her: "So since you're "one of them" can you still touch our seasonal stuff since it'll be Christmas, Halloween and Easter?"
Me: "Yeah, I have no problem with those holidays, I just don't celebrate them".
      Her: "Oh okay then"
