Associate Analyst Interview

Associate Analyst
New York, NY

I applied through a recruiter and the process took a day - interviewed at Moody's in November 2009.

Interview Details – My recruiter suggested I go in and speak with the Head of the Group along with some of the team members. The people there are extremely friendly and easy to talk to. They are straightforward and really try to understand how your background fits in with what they are looking for. It was one of the best interviews I had gone on thus far. Even though, in the end, I was too junior for what they were looking for, I don't regret going in as it really helped me understand what there company does and also gave me a good prep for my next interview.

The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Moody's in July 2010.

Interview Details – I was a temporary employee with moody's and offered the opportunity to interview internally for a full-time position. This was after having been there only 1.5 months. I met with the person who will be my boss and then the former person in the role i will be filling and the managing director in charge of the department. The interviews very informal as I had prior knowledge of the company and everything i would be doing. I didn't feel much pressure interviewing but it was clear that they wanted to see that I have direct knowledge of the business and I would be able to get up to speed very quickly in a high exposure area.

Interview Questions

  • What do you know about moody's CFG?   Answer Question
  • Tell me about your past positions and how those skills pertain to the job you are interviewing for.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – I was told by my current supervisor not to negotiate. I am fairly content with the compensation but not necessarily happy with it. But in this climate I am glad to fully employed.

The process took a day - interviewed at Moody's in June 2011.

Interview Details – I was contacted by corporate HR a month after I applied to set up interviews. A week later there were 3 in-person interviews at the office (hiring manager, office manager, and an associate). All of the questions were personality-oriented, i.e. why do you want to work here, tell me about a time you overcame an obstacle, give me an example of how you resolved a group conflict, tell me about how you work to meet deadlines, etc. Later the same day there were 3 phone interviews (VP of the analyst group and another hiring manager). The phone interviewers asked basically the same type of questions, but the VP brought up balance sheet sheets and cash flow statements. The VP asked what you would look for when analyzing the overall health of a company. Not too difficult.

I would suggest that that an interviewee be prepared to answer a lot of of the standard personality questions and be able to give examples, as well as explain how their previous experiences translate to this job/industry. I wouldn't worry about any technical questions (besides the aforementioned accounting question) being asked. However it is important to be knowledgeable about Moody's and read upon the job function, industry you will cover, and pertinent news headlines a little bit.

Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. Everyone mostly stressed how collegial the working environment was and how well everyone got along. Work/life balance was also emphasized.

Overall I left the interview with a good impression, but I got the feeling that they already had someone else in mind for the position. Corporate HR called me at the conclusion of the interviews and informed me that they would call back within a few days to touch base and let me know. A week after the stated deadline had passed, I called HR to check in. I left a message and received no response. A week later the HR rep sent an e-mail stating that they were pursuing other more qualified candidates.

The process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Moody's in November 2011.

Interview Details – The whole interview process took almost a whole day since I met with 5 senior professionals in the group. Those people are very knowledgeable, smart and highly educated. So just try to be very familiar with your resume and be very confident. Show your knowledge/skills and ask smart questions. It would be great to know what services/products that Moody's is offering and what the group is doing.

The process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at Moody's in December 2011.

Interview Details – Had an initial phone interview with office manager that was behavioral in nature. Was notified very shortly thereafter that I was invited for an in-office interview with the group in New York. Over course of 4 hours or so, interviewed with six people--mostly Vice-Presidents, one Managing Director for the group, and another Associate Analyst. All asked the same general questions--very few functional knowledge-oriented questions.

I applied online and the process took 4 weeks - interviewed at Moody's in December 2010.

Interview Details – I sent my resume online and was contacted by a recruiter about a month later and scheduled a phone interview. The phone interview took about 30 minutes and consisted of skills questions. The next day, i was contacted to come in for a personal interview. Interviewed one on one with three AVP's and one Analyst. The questions were more of the personality variety than the skills. The interviewers were all nice, respectful and answered all my questions about the company and their jobs.

I applied through college or university - interviewed at Moody's in November 2011.

Interview Details – First Interview was on campus. I had two interviews that lasted about a half hour each. The interviewers were very pleasant and sharp. I made it to the second round, so I had to go to their office in NYC where I was interviewed by 5 different managers. 1 of them was a senior vice president and the other 4 MD's. Again, very nice atmosphere and very nice work place in general.

I applied through a recruiter and the process took a day - interviewed at Moody's in January 2011.

Interview Details – I got this interview by a Moody's corporate recruiter. She said no phone interview necessary prior to the face-to-face interview. Interviewed by 4 senior analysts, the hiring manager's attitude is weird. In contrast to other 3 senior analysts favorite attitude, he did not show his interest on me by spending time to ask me questions, and stated that he would end earlier because he was in hurry to a meeting. He even asked me whether there is anyone I know in Moodys, I feel that he already had someone in his mind for this position.

The fact is I do not know anyone in Moodys and the conversation between me and the hiring manager was ended 10 mints earlier than the expected 30 mints time frame. Although the whole interview team ended up with highly satisfaction with my qualification and fit, I did not hear from the HR people for 2 weeks.

The interview questions are quite standard, such as:
Tell me sth about yourself, and your last position? Why you think you are a good fit? Why you want to work for Moodys? Why you like credit analysis field?

People there are generally easy to talk, friendly.

Interview Question – why you did you study for your MS.c. Finance degree?   Answer Question

I applied through college or university and the process took 1+ week - interviewed at Moody's.

Interview Details – It's a campus interview. The whole process was pleasant and lasted about half an hour. It's basically about going over your resume, asking you about your experiences, and they may want to know the details about your past experiences. But no behavior questions. I write thanks letters to both of my interviewers but no reply so far.

Interview Question – No unexpected question, all are those your should know well about and answer without even a little hesitation.   Answer Question
