    Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ weekinterviewed at New York Life (Bethesda, MD).

    Interview

By far the best interview I've had so far, mainly because it didn't feel like an interview, it was more like a casual conversation with a friend.
Everything became clear after the first conversation and I left with no doubt regarding the job applied for.
Not frightening at all, very friendly

    Life Insurance Agent Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Lubbock, TX
    Accepted Offer
    Neutral Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at New York Life (Lubbock, TX).

    Interview

First interview was just a get to know you and very relaxed with a personality test before I left. Second interview was a little more about the job and telling you what the job entails. Third interview was how the pay works and how you generate names and people for you to call on. They tell you no cold calling, but once you are done with your own friends and family list that's what the job would consist of. Very good people there though.

    Interview Questions

    • How many people do you know in the area or that you could call on?   1 Answer

    Negotiation

There was no negotiation because it is full commission and I did not accept the offer.

    Financial Services Professional Interview

Anonymous Employee in New York, NY
    Declined Offer
    Positive Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 daysinterviewed at New York Life (New York, NY) in June 2015.

    Interview

There was a 30 minute assessment test on a provided computer which required an internet connection. Followed by a person to person interview with the Recruiter, who was very pleasant and only asked very few and basic questions. It was not a very thorough interview at all. Also you have to make sure you bring proper id just to be admitted into the high rise building located near Wall Street.

    Interview Questions

    • What do you know about our company?   1 Answer

    Reasons for Declining

The job description was very vague, and the follow up requirements were never communicated to me. This an awful way to start a job. How can you expect the employee to be excited if they are constantly left in the dark and confused.

    Financial Advisor Interview

    Application

I applied through other source. The process took 5 weeksinterviewed at New York Life (Edison, NJ) in May 2015.

    Interview

Shady. A waste of time and decietful. I was presented with a "base salary" to start plus your insurance commissions. You would start with Health & Life and can add your Financial Licenses later. I made it very clear I was not in a position to join a commission only position. I was assured of the base salary from the start.... I find out at the end of the "hiring interview" after: meet & greet, 1st interview, background check, jumping through hoops, providing 4 business references, 10 personal references, 2nd interview, completed a 15 person questionnairre, psych test, etc..... Such a lie.

I was told that the "base salary" was not paid as a salary as presented from the start! ?!!! It was a performance base draw that can only be accessed with your commission. On top of that, you needed to be approved by NYL after completing a now 200 Person Circle of Qualified Investors and meet other criteria.

The interviewer even told me "don't quit your job just yet, while you go out and complete your 200-250 Investor Circle....." Are you kidding me?

Such a decietful waste of my time. Horrible to think about.

    Interview

    Interview

Got contacted through LinkedIn, standard and very comfortable interview. Interviewer "laid all the cards out on the table" and was honest. But they really tried to convince me to work there. They made me fill out a short survey after the interview was completed. Got offered a second interview out of three but turned it down since it wasn't for me.

    Interview

I applied online through indeed.com and was contacted within a day of applying. I was unable to come in for an interview until 3 weeks later, but the person who recruited me was very understanding and had me contact her a week before I would be in town. The interview took about an hour and though I was not far enough in my college career to be signed on as an agent, my interviewer promised to send my resume to her colleagues looking for office interns. Altogether a very good interview.

    Investment Agent Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied in-person. The process took 4 weeksinterviewed at New York Life (Salt Lake City, UT) in May 2015.

    Interview

The interview was a little MLM / fraud like. I recognize that NYL is a well established company, but they need to revisit their recruiting process. Upon applying, I received an email inviting me to interview. When I arrived, I interviewed with the district sales manager, whose interview style was to flip through a packet of info to show me that NYL was legitimate. I then took an assessment, and was given "homework", as he called it, to fill out a questionnaire. He indicated that during the next visit we would be reviewing my answers and seeing if NYL would be a good fit or not. He also stated that we would review my assessment scoring at that time. This interview was an hour.
During our followup he shared that I had received "the highest assessment scoring he has seen". Not surprised based on my sales experience. The second interview he discussed more of why NYL was a good company, and about how they wanted to grow this area. The second interview lasted an hour as well. I was then asked to go to the corporate office, 40 minutes north, to participate in a training. I was told that they would go over Marketing and Training. As of this stage, I wasn't yet offered employment. Following that 1.5 hour unpaid meeting (still not even an employee?) I was invited back to talk about the commission scale. Another 1.5 hr meeting, 40 minutes away.
Unless you like to be jerked around, don't interview for NYL unless you have no other options or are interested in their commission only lengthy interview process.
