The phone interview was easy. They asked basic interview questions involving how you feel about working on commission and sales. After the phone interview you have an in person interview.

    Interview Questions
    • During the in person interview the most difficult question they asked was to go to the rack in the room and pick out an item and then sell it to the person interviewing you.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
No negotiation. It is $10/hr when you are training. It is based off of commission when you are on the sales floor.

Had a very informal but nice interview with Mens department Manager and got hired on the spot. But when I came to work the first day the manager wasn't there only his assistant was and he didn't know he hired a new person so my first day was very unwelcoming and uncomfortable.

Its commission so whatever department your in is the commission rate you get so you can't negotiate even if you have many years of selling under your belt.

It's been years since, so honestly I can't remember it all too well. I had a phone interview with HR, then they scheduled me a time to sit down in person. A woman from HR met me at the Nordstrom E-bar then proceeded to ask me a series of questions. It was a pretty standard interview, just remember to smile lots and really think about your responses. Don't ramble! Keep your answers short and concise. Afterwards, she asked me if I had time to meet with the dept. manager of the dept I was applying with. Of course I said yes, then I had my last face-to-face interview with the dept. manager. A few hours later I got a call from the dept. manager offering me a job on her sales team.

Nothing too crazy; I applied online and received a call to schedule a phone interview. After conducting the phone interview I received an email saying that I passed and they wanted to conduct an in-person interview. Very simple process, I went to the HR department and someone from the staff interviewed me in a tiny room. Can't remember the questions because it was so long ago but I basically got the job on the spot and they had me sign the papers and whatnot right then.

    Specialty Coffee Assistant Manager Interview

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3+ weeksinterviewed at Nordstrom in January 2015.

    Interview Details

I was initially contacted by a recruiter from Nordstrom's Seattle headquarters via LinkedIn. She was very friendly, just letting me know they had a position open and that she was interested in discussing it with me. Once I replied, she asked for my email address, to which she forwarded a job description and set up a time to chat over the phone. I was expecting the initial phone to be a little more conversational, but it was definitely a full-on interview. I was asked about the scope of my previous management experience (did I have the final say in hiring decisions and evaluations, etc.), what my biggest contribution was at my previous employer, how had I worked to develop other employees, was I relocatable, why was I interested in Nordstrom, and why was I leaving my current employer.

After the phone screening, the recruiter set up an in-person interview with the store manager the position reported to. I have to say, the store manager did something that was just so wonderfully considerate- she called me a few days prior to our scheduled interview to confirm our appointment time and to make sure I had a good contact number for her in case anything came up. I've never experienced that before, and it did a lot to just make me feel valued right from the start. The in-person interview questions were similar to the initial phone screening, along with some discussion of what work schedules would be like and a passing discussion of salary requirements.

From there, the store manager set up another phone interview with the regional manager, who was also very friendly, and whose interview style was very informal and conversational. She asked questions about my development at my previous employer, what kind of opportunities I had seen there, how I developed my direct reports, and about my overall style of leadership and direction. She also discussed the possibility of future relocation.

Finally, the regional manager set up yet ANOTHER phone interview with the divisional manager. This one was short, only about twenty minutes, and was focused primarily on ensuring values alignment and that I would do well within the framework of Nordstrom's company culture. We also discussed further development and what my long-term goals were.

Though the interview process was long (about three weeks from start to finish), each interview was a positive experience, and each person I spoke with seemed to be honest, down-to-earth, and sincere in their desire to just get to know me, to make sure I was someone they could work well with.

    Interview Questions
    • I was asked to walk through how I had developed a direct report, from how I identified potential, provided targeted training, and delegated increased responsibility.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
I was asked on two different occasions what my salary requirements were. On the first occasion I gave a vague range, and was more specific the second. When they extended the job offer to me, they offered close to what I had asked for, so I did not negotiate further.
