Interview Details – I applied online and then was later contacted by email. There was a bit of an issue since I was turned down through the system I applied through, but was contacted by a recruiter. Nevertheless the issue was resolved and I was brought in for interviews, which I was told was the first of four or so rounds.

Interview Question – I didn't expect that they'd ask about what I knew about commissions based sales, but the question was more or less obviously   Answer Question

Difficult Interview

College Financial Representative Interview

College Financial Representative

I applied through college or university and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Northwestern Mutual in April 2013.

Interview Details – The interview process at Northwestern is a little bit daunting - at the first meeting they will repeatedly tell you that their internship is very highly ranked and give you a basic overview of what you will do if hired. There is then a brief interview, just a few questions about your thoughts on the insurance industry.
The second meeting with Northwestern will be at the local office you would be assigned to work at if hired and with someone you would be working under. They will further look for your interests in insurance and look for your goals. At this point they will assign you with coming up with a contact list of 100 friends and family members who you would be able to call, network with, and sell insurance to, if hired. They will also give you some interview questions to ask a few contacts regarding financial planning and insurance. The important thing with this step is that the list of 100 contacts have to be people Northwestern finds desirable - what I was instructed was to come up with a contact sheet of 100 of my friends and family members in the area. My interviewer told me that they could be people my age; at the time I was 20. When I turned in my contact sheet for review I was told that that list of 100 people all had to be in their late 20's or early 30's and established in a professional career, specifically they requested accountants and attorneys. If you're between the ages of 18 and 22 like most college students you will probably find this task very difficult as I did. This seems to be the biggest catch in the whole process.

Interview Question – The most difficult part of this interview process is that you must come up with 100 contacts as described above.   Answer Question

Summer Intern Interview

Summer Intern

Interviewed at Northwestern Mutual

Interview Details – The interview went much as expected, they sit you down in a little room, you answer typical questions and they talk up the position a lot. As far as I know it followed rather normal flows, the interviewer was very nice and as usual a current employee of the company. Maybe the only odd things was that the guy I was being interviewed by actually help the position I was applying for.

Interview Question – Why do you want this job, and what kind of person are you. How does that mean you should get the job.   Answer Question
