I applied in-person and the process took a day - interviewed at River Island Clothing in November 2013.

Interview Details – I posted in my CV and cover letter to my local River Island so see if there was any jobs going, and seeing as that it is nearly Christmas I was called back right away to be invited to a Recruitment Event the next week. The manager was super nice and friendly, but I guess that is how they all are until you are actually in the shop!

I went to the event and there was 18 of us in total. We were all given name tags, which were really unnecessary and made us all feel like we were back in playschool but I guess the manager thought it was needed so I just went along with it. At first the manager introduced herself and told us a little about the background of RI and what types of jobs she had to offer us and what contracts. She had 15 jobs in total which is CRAZY considering it is a small enough store. She then introduced us to 2 more managers and split us into 3 groups of 6.

When we were in our groups of 6 she assigned one manager to each group, my group got a young assistant manager who was so lovely and nice to us she put us at our ease straight away and was making jokes with us. She played an ice breaker game just to make us more comfortable around each other. She asked us all the same question 'If you could be a beverage what would you be and why?' It was just a silly question that you were supposed to have a laugh with, I suppose it was also her way of seeing who was up for fun.

After that we were all pretty comfortable around each other and then she asked us a question each, they were things like 'How would you sell RI clothing' and 'How can you offer good customer service to our customers'. I got asked 'Who inspires you and why?' which was easy enough but you had to think on the spot so a lot of people ended up blabbing about crap that wasn't even relevant to the question, but the manager was really helpful and gave them hints that would make a good answer.

Then we were put into pairs and assigned to different part of the store and given a celebrity and an occasion to find an outfit for. We got Pixie Lott going to college and were assigned the laid back casual section of the store. It was easy enough, just a tip to anyone who is going to a interview soon, don't be afraid to think outside the box. Me and my partner thought because it is Pixie Lott, she would probably be going out after college so we picked up a clutch and heels that she could change her college outfit into a night out look too. The manager really liked that and she was impressed that we took the initiative.

After all that she just told us about what its like to work in RI and the discounts and different shifts you can work. We all ended up chatting about general things like holidays and school, she really was so nice and laid back, I think we got it easy compared to the other groups!

Then they just told us we would be contacted in 2 days if we got the job and sent home. I don't see how they could tell who was a good worker or not by that night alone as it didn't show who was customer savvy or who had fashion knowledge, but I'm not complaining! I got offered a job 2 days later and I am going for my induction later this day!

Interview Question – Who inspires you the most and why?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiation just told to come for an induction and they would talk contracts then.

I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at River Island Clothing.

Interview Details – I applied on the website and I got a text for an interview a week later. It was a group interview with an individual interview aswell. During the group interview, you are asked about yourself (which is expected), then you are asked to do groupwork which consists of different things. You could be asked to talk about an outfit that you would choose for a certain age group e.g a 20 year old on a night out or a certain celebrity like Rihanna. Make sure you emphasise about your love for fashion and try to stand out in the group like being the one to write the groups suggestions, kinda shows that you are willing to help out (as in my interview no one else wanted to write). You are also asked to go around the shop and pick an outfit for a certain person like the above, go for top/ dress, shoes, purses and even jewlerry. Then you brought aside from the group with a 1 on 1 interview like about you, how much you love fashion, a time where you worked with a group to solve a problem, a time when you were helpful, what you think about River Island and why you want to work for them. After the interview, you should get a call within a week, if you didn't get a job they send you an email within a few days.

Interview Question – The most unexpected was the one about the latest trend. I did prepare for the interview, but seeming as I was not a total "fashion head" I really did overlook that. So it shows that you know your stuff and are actually interested in fashion.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No you were not able to negotiate. You had to accept minimum wage.
