Got contacted by a company representative in Arizona. Asked me basic questions like any other job interview. I had applied for a deli clerk but was only offered a courtesy clerk position.

    Courtesy Clerk Interview

I applied online. The process took a weekinterviewed at Safeway.

    Interview Details

Applied online; got called almost a week later. When I called the store back the manager gave a preliminary questionnaire i.e. (compliant with drug test, ever been arrested, etc,) then we set up a time to come in store and interview. The manager was very nice and polite, understood any concern/ question I had. I was scheduled to come in two days after the initial call. I came in store and it was during an average peak time for them, so the manager I was assigned was justified in being a bit stressed. I was told to wait in the lounge area until the customer level died down, which ended up being about 45 minutes after I arrived. I won't complain because I understood it came along with the trade of running a store. This gave me time to get my nerves to an ease, and actually talked with an employee a little; another employee told me "good luck."

So when I was summoned to interview, it was pretty simple: we went through the application, drug test, etc. There were a few misunderstandings with the manager I talked to on the phone in how the process was suppose to go, so the manager I interviewed with basically waived most questions since I'd been there for so long and wanted to hire me. The interview questions were pretty basic i.e. ("Why do you want to work here?" , "What does customer service mean to you?" , "Describe a time you worked in a team.") Also they will most likely ask you a "sales related" question and mine happened to be a scenario in which I had to sell additional items for a parent buying a party cake. Be prepared to answer this and list several items. But don't stress it, even if you aren't an ideal seller, they shouldn't care that much. That's what I was told.

I was hired on the spot, which followed paper work and other information I needed. This gave time to converse and explain availability/ other questions.

** I was told my application was pulled from others because my availability was pretty decent. (I marked down every day as available.) **

    Interview Questions
    • This wasn't my first interview at a company so I expected the traditional, "Why do you want to work here" , "Describe this, that," and so on. But if this is your first time, don't stress it, just make sure you do your research on job interview questions and make sure you have an idea of what to say. Just let the rest take care of itself (:   Answer Question

Pretty simple interview process. Easy business questions and it's basically to just see if you're good with the public and can do basic math. nothing overly difficult since it's a job created for high school kids or retired citizens.

    Interview Questions
    • There were no overly difficult questions. the only question that was "situation based" was "What would your up-selling strategy be towards someone buying a cake?"   View Answer

I applied online. The process took 3 daysinterviewed at Safeway in December 2014.

    Interview Details

I applied online and got a call 3 days later. I arrived 10 minutes early and was led to an office where the interview was to be had. The interview questions were very basic such as "why do you want to work here?", short/long term goals, and qualities that you previous employer would point out about you. It was a fairly easy/average interview. After the interview, you take a drug test. If you pass this you are almost guaranteed the job unless you do something stupid.

    Produce Clerk Interview

    Application Details

I applied online – interviewed at Safeway in November 2014.

    Interview Details

The interview takes place in the office next to the messy break room, which is sparsely populated with surly unfriendly future co-workers who don't look up or smile. In the office there is a bank of monitors and associated wiring and humming boxes, showing various views around the store where customers might be in need of observance. The video is fuzzy and cheap looking, but a somewhat shocking reminder of our constant lack of privacy in the modern world. The "person in charge" is friendly and relaxed, to the point of yelling at an employee in the break room about an unpleasant odor that she detected, without worrying about the perceptions of her present company--the job seeker. The questions are your standard corporate questions read from a loose leaf notebook, with your answers jotted down as you search your heart for the response they would like to hear. Basically, will you give yourself heart and soul to the company at all hours day and night, weekends and holidays, and ask nothing in return? At some point you are notified that the position is part-time on-call, and that the hourly wage is 10 cents over minimum (company policy) and that you will be required to join the union and pay monthly dues for the privilege. Also that any increase in salary is based on time served and not merit, so no incentive to strain yourself trying to outperform anyone. You will be notified within a week if you dodged a bullet or got the job, and someone from corporate will email you or call to find out how the interview went. --Also, Safeway never forgets. So if you were ever fired or if anyone in the past has had an issue with your attitude or performance, you are exiled forever from the glorious company that is Safeway.

I applied online. The process took 2+ weeksinterviewed at Safeway.

    Interview Details

Very unprofessional , the assistant store manager had no idea about benefits nor the union. They had to have a floral employee explain the job specifications. We were interrupted every 10 minutes by other employees knocking on the door asking questions about their break, over rings , complaints about other employees.

I applied in-person. The process took 1+ weekinterviewed at Safeway in October 2014.

    Interview Details

Completed the online application process and attended and in-store "job-fair" the job fair was nothing more than a small table near the entrance of the store. An assistant manager was there with a clipboard collecting information like your email address phone number position your interested in and whether you applied online. He seemed fairly new, and I think the job fair was something the district required as every Safeway in the area was doing it on the same day. Nothing came of the job fair within a couple of days so I called the store and found out the hiring manager was on vacation. I went into the store the following week when I told she would be back. I introduced myself and told her I applied online and she set up an interview 2 days away on the spot. The interview was pretty standard, we went into some store supply closet doubling as an office and she asked the required questions from the company interview guideline packet. It was quite a lengthy interview, perhaps 15-20 standard questions, mostly to confirm you posses at least a basic level of customer service skills and are not a sociopath. Upon completing the questions she informed me I passed and I took an oral drug test on the spot. I started a couple days later, the computer training took about 12 hours over 3 days which I definitely found to be overkill. Overall i found it very easy to get an interview and an offer so long as you're persistent and make and effort to see the hiring manager in store after completing the online application.

The manager was friendly, but it took a while to get started. She seemed a bit frantic and unorganized. There was a foul smell coming from the store. It genuinely smelled like rotting food, and rats. When we got started, she asked me about my previous work. She then asked me about by citizenship status, and on to the computerized math test and questionnaire.

    Courtesy Clerk Interview

I applied online – interviewed at Safeway in September 2014.

    Interview Details

I applied to Safeway not really know what to expect or do because I had just moved to another state. They gave me a pre interview on the phone. They told me I would be applying for the Deli Clerk. I go in for the actual interview and they told me they had just filled all other positions other then the courtesy clerk. (I have job experience in deli services and bakery services). They gave me the job as courtesy clerk and I took it because I really needed a job. They had more people come in for interviews and they gave them jobs for the deli and bakery. I went online to see if they were still hiring and they just posted a new job opening for bakery and deli.
The interviewer told me to come in a few hours later to do some paper work. I went in, she made me wait a half hour. She told me to come in at a specific time a few days later for computer training, I went in, she told me to wait and then she told me I had to come back later. So I went in later and she left me on my own at the computer doing stupid training that was way to long. She then told me to go in the next day to meet with a manager, and I did. They made me wait half an hour again and then the manager didn't even know why I was there and what the interviewer wanted him to do.

This was the worst hiring process ever. Management didn't even care about the new hires and treated us like dirt.

I will definitely quit when I find a new job.

interviewed at Safeway in September 2014.

    Interview Details

Phone interview followed by an in-person interview a few days later. After the interview, was asked to take a test. The first part of the test were math and cash register skills. The second part of the test was a personality assessment. If you do well on the skills test but don't match the personality traits they are looking for, they will say you're not qualified for the position. You have to pass the test to get the job, regardless of how the interview went.
