    Associate Software Engineer Interview

    Application Details

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Sage North America in November 2014.

    Interview Details

A recruiter contacted me via LinkedIn about a position at Sage NA with a detailed description. After communicating back my interest in the position we spoke briefly on the telephone and went over my goals and I told him about some of the projects that I have been working on. He then contacted a Sr. Talent Acquisitions member who later contacted me via telephone to discuss the projects that I have worked on in slightly more detail. He seemed to have some technical training and asked some minor technical questions regarding the projects. Shortly after, I received a c# questionnaire that was nearly identical to some college level intro level programming course assignments. Within 3 days I was asked to do an in person interview with the team manager, dev ops manager, and two Sr. level Software Engineers. First I met with the software engineers. First, they reviewed a couple of things on my assessment to see if I recognized any things I could have done differently. Then they asked me a high level implementation question and had me white board a solution. There was a lot of low key discussion. They were mainly looking for problem solving skills and how I would go about implementing a resolution to a random problem. They never made me feel uncomfortable. It was very collaborative. I could ask questions, they would ask questions and they assessed how I went about it.
Then I met with the DevOps manager and Team Manager who reviewed my interests, skills, goals, projects, and experience in agile processes. The interview ended with a tour of the facility.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeksinterviewed at Sage North America.

    Interview Details

While it was a long, drawn out process over 4 weeks, in the end it proved worthwhile. After initial contact by the local recruiter I had to speak with the senior recruiter, which was followed by four more interviews with the hiring director, another director and two VPs. The team is distributed and on different time zones so catching up for feedback and scheduling often took some extra time. Frustrating at times and required strategic prodding from my side but given the importance and level of the position, due diligence on their part was necessary. And I appreciate their efforts.

That said, every person was great to speak with. Down-to-earth, asked thoughtful, relevant questions, really listened, and exhibited patience and thought in answering my questions.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Sage North America.

    Interview Details

The recruiter was the first person to contact me. After going through a phone screen, I was scheduled for an interview onsite. After interviewing with an employee in a similar role and the hiring manager, I interviewed with a member of senior management. I received a follow-up call the next day and was told that they would be in contact shortly. Within a few days, I received a call to come in for a second interview. I met with another member of management and again with the hiring manager. The next day or two, I received a call from the recruiter with an offer. Respectable and timely process.

Sage does a good job laying the expectation early in the interview process of the salary they are tageting and only moving forward if you are interested. By the time you get to offer, you don't have much to negotiate.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Sage North America.

    Interview Details

Started with a phone screen. Then a face to face with a small panel from the team. It was very comfortable, not relaxing but not to stressed either. Once the interview was over it took about a week to hear back about an offer.

    Interview Questions
    • Star wars or Star Trek... Could go either way really. I think they wanted to know if I was a nerd or a geek. Turns out I'm both. Some questions about writing test cases and SDLC. not hard questions at all.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
I did negotiate. The job originally was for a Software Test Engineer, but the salary cap was lower than I was willing to take. So I declined initially. They came back with a second offer reaching my salary requirement by offering me a Sr. Test Engineer position instead of Test Engineer. I accepted.

    Application Details

I applied online. The process took a weekinterviewed at Sage North America.

    Interview Details

I first had several phone interviews. Following the phone interviews which were only lightly touched on technical aspects, I was flown to the company for some in person interviews.

These were one on one interviews for about an hour with 5 currently employed developers and one manager. One interviewer hit hard on the technical questions and problem solving, but the rest mostly just asked about items on my resume (had to show the knowledge).

    Interview Questions
    • I had to reverse a doubly-linked list. It's not really that hard of a problem, but I felt kind of put on the spot for it   Answer Question
