    Sky Engineering Academy

I applied online, and received further instructions a week later. I had to do a programming task home and had a week to complete it. Not the hardest thing I've done by far, but because I tried to ace it, it took me an unexpected amount of time (several afternoons).

After this, I was appointed for a phone interview, really short, they just wanted to confirm my personal data and to make sure I understood the conditions of the position. I was then scheduled for an assessment day, in which I was required to work with other candidates over the day. We would have people looking at what we were doing for the whole duration, but they were friendly and even offered help at times.

The tasks we were asked to do collectively were really fun, with even robots involved! The atmosphere was really friendly the whole time, I can't stress this enough.

There was also a small 1:1 interview in which they asked the usual personal questions (what is your worst defect etc...).

At the end of the day, they guided us through their campus and installations and let us talk with current employees to ask anything we wanted without anyone overlooking what questions we were asking.

Overall I couldn't be more impressed.

    Interview Questions
    • There weren't any hard questions, some of the candidates were not computer scientists and had little experience as programmers, although they had impressive backgrounds from top universities. They were much more interested in our attitude than our skills.   Answer Question

    Interview Details

it was slow getting to the interview, but once there the job offer came very quickly, and they moved quickly on from there.
the rate is fixed, no room for negotiation, it least it was for me, as I tried!
interview lasted about an hour with 2 people manager and his techy. ( he was very very techy, once of the best I've seen)
the interview leaned slightly more on the people side - as in how well I would function in the team and the company and how good a fit I was for it.

Anonymous Interview Candidate in London, England (UK)
    Application Details

I interviewed through a recruiter. The process took 3 months - interviewed at Sky in July 2010.

    Interview Details

Very long-winded, took 3 months from beginning to end.

Had initial telephone interview, followed up by a 1.5 hour 1:1 with the hiring manager and another manager, also consisted of a skills test with a few problem solving type scenarios.

2nd interview 9 days later was with two more senior stakeholders and consisted of a 2 hour grilling over my past experiences and CV details. Also had the usual HR related questions to answer. The interviews were quite stress-full and not easy to get through, I think part of the process was to evaluate me under pressure.

    Interview Questions
    • Can you tell me a situation where you faced a challenge and how did you overcome it?   Answer Question
    • Which football team do you support?   Answer Question
    • How will you fit in with the fast-paced nature of the role?   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
None. I was offered the top salary in the banding with no further room for manoeuvre. The contract mentions a discretionary bonus, but this has never been paid. You get the usual Sky perks, TV etc as standard - 25 paid days holiday, rising to a max of 30 over the first 5 years.
