Training/Ops Manager at Sports Authority

No Offer – Interviewed in Chicago, IL – Reviewed Nov 12, 2012

Interview Details – Applied on S.A. Elite website. Was contacted by store manager 2 weeks later as a position became available. Set up an in - person interview at the location. Interview was a one - on one process with the store manager. It was very candid but, professional. Manager didn't ask me any "What if..." or "How would you act in this situation" type of questions.

Interview Question – Pretty straight forward interview. Talked about my accomplishments and what I wanted out of the job. Talked about what I expected from S.A. that wasn't accomplished at my other positions. Talked about the company's direction and expectations.   Answer Question

Manager-in-training at Sports Authority

No Offer – Interviewed in Scottsdale, AZ Mar 2011 – Reviewed Nov 18, 2011

Interview Details – I originally interviewed for a management position, but there were no management positions open. The interview itself was pretty short. I had previous experience with the company and I had recently graduated college. It was pretty apparent the store wanted me. I first met with the Operations Manager just to discuss my previous work and college experience. A few days later I met with the Store Manager and Hardlines managers just so they had an idea of who they were bringing on. I had to take a sales position, but I was promised the first management position that opened up in the district. After 5 open positions had come and gone and about 3 more interviews, I was finally promoted to the position I was promised 7 months earlier.

Interview Question – There were no difficult questions. I had a very thorough understanding of the business and what was expect of me.   Answer Question

Assistant Manager at Sports Authority

No Offer – Interviewed in Walnut Creek, CA Mar 2011 – Reviewed Apr 14, 2011

Interview Details – I was initially called to come in for interview with store manager. Basic interview quesions..what are your goals? Why are you interested in working here? Are you interested in management opportunuties?
Called for a second interview with group panel. Management position was specified, so I prepared extensively for this. When I arrived for interview, it was same day as "open interviews" They had already hired the assistant manager position, so this was surprising and a bit unprofessional in my opinion.

Guess I should have trusted my "gut" instinct on this one. I'm relieved this door has closed so I move towards a company that is a better fit!

Project Manager at Sports Authority

No Offer – Interviewed in Englewood, CO Dec 2010 – Reviewed Dec 16, 2010

Interview Details – The interview process consisted of:

1) Applied Online, got called next day
2) Phone interview/screen with HR
3) Called back to interview in person the following week.
4) Interviewed with 1 team member - went well, moved on to next step
5) Interviewed with Lead, then a panel of 3 other potential peers

The interview process was really long and involved. Lots of people asking the same questions, lots of time spent interviewing. The interview itself was a mixed bag. I felt like the lead wanted something that the other PMs did not - so there was a bit of conflict and unpleasant attitudes during the interviews.

Mostly situational questions - Tell me your biggest project? How do you handle conflict? You know big vague questions. They definitely look for the "Sports Authority" answer - meaning they think there is one way to do things - so beware they will get snippy if you don't answer just right.

Overall, I found the first 2 interviews great and the panel interviews grueling. Seemed like they had another candidate in mind and they were just going through the motions. Wasted my time.

Project Based at Sports Authority

No Offer – Interviewed in Englewood, CO May 2009 – Reviewed Dec 17, 2009

Interview Details – Flew in from out of state to interview on a new project, so I felt pretty confident they were excited about my skills. But as I began the interview process, it became very apparent that they did not yet have an idea of what they wanted to do or where they wanted to go. Interviewers did not seem very prepared to question me about my skillset. It unfortunately seemed to be a complete waste of time.
